Hey guys,

Was just driving home 5 minutes ago, all was well until I was driving in the backstreets towards my house, suddenly I heard this whir whir whir whir noise coming from the front end of the car, when slowing down in neutral it could also be heard, and loudest on accel

This has got me baffled, gearbox shifts fine and car was driving fine on the freeway 10 minutes prior

Hope someone has been thru something like this, car is an ek4 with s4c gearbox without lsd, before this all happen, gearbox would whine from 1st to 3rd, knowing that it's an input shaft bearing that's probably on the way out. The whine was still there when I drove into the driveway, but I get this oscillating whirring sounds, like someone stuck someone on my tyres and noise comes every one tyre rotation

Hi Kenny

A gearbox with a worn bearing will scatter metal fragments through the entire gearbox which in turn accelerates wear on other bearings and bearing races over time. Either your input shaft bearing has failed further or another bearing or gear mesh has worn and started making more noises.

I'll drain the oil out tomorow and see if anything comes out, for a second I thought I ran over a witches hatch or something

With all that noise too, gearbox shifted fine, just that noise caused the whole car to shake and vibrate badly in sync with the noise

Sure its not wheel bearings or perhaps a cvshaft? I know when my wheel bearing went out it was whirring like a boss

ahhh. i took mine apart tonight and found....

inside the diff itself, spider gears decided to let loose, bits of teeth from spurs found on Mr.magnet
other then this damage, everything else in the gearbox looks like it has just been rebuild, all syncro's,hubs, gears, sync rings are new, not even a mark on them

might just drop in an OBX helical LSD and see how that goes

I'd think twice before getting an OBX. If you want helical, try and get your hands on OEM, otherwise MFactory make a decent unit. Here's a pretty comprehensive writeup on the "quality" of the OBX centres: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/57834-obx-vs-quaife-with-pixors/

Don't even think about getting a OBX, it's a hit and miss majority being a miss. Very poor quality

OP needs to decide whether you want plate/clutch or helical and then go from there.

The diff cups where the drive shaft enters, ended up breaking, for some unknown and damaged this part of the case, luckily this part is just under the bearing cutout

The four cutouts on the diff cups are sharp, like it was been chipped or broken off, the broken off pieces ended up damaging the case in the pictures up above

so whats the problem?

Vvvtec
01-06-2014, 01:16 PM
Apart from that pitting on the case, im also failing to see what the problem is? The gears look fine.

What did your fluid look like when you drained it? And what pieces did you find?

Spoon-Accord
01-06-2014, 01:58 PM
Pieces of the gears in diff (spider gears gave up)
