View Full Version : Is a valve clearance neccesary?

Car is approaching 120k.
I know it has been "checked" in other services by the previous owner and was wondering if it is something that should be done for the Euro?

Apparently Honda charge to both check and perform the valve adjustment so it would be better to just tell them to do it rather than check?

My car doesn't run rough, although I feel it could be better in acceleration.
Thoughts?

I do it every 40,000. Take it elsewhere and have it done.

I have not had mine checked or done for over 100,000k. Runs perfect.

if you ask them to 'do' it then they will charge you regardless of whether the work was required.

If you ask them the 'check' then they'll do just that, and probably find a 'problem'

Its not hard to do, and it should be done every 40k. Its takes about 1 hour to do but about 2 hours the first time you do it.
You can tell if the valves hasn't been done by a rattly sound on cold startup, owners will put thicker oil to mask the sound.hahaha

Rang Hanny's Performance and the guy said rather than adjusting it he would check to see if the engine is noisy etc. I rather not do it myself as I'm not a DIY person so don't want to stuff it up.

Asked Hanny if it was part of a major service when getting it done with him. He said yeah and when I got it serviced turns out his check was to listen to see whether or not it was noisy. Not noisy = no need to adjust = check done according to him.

Adjustments MUST be done when the engine is dead cold, and hadn't been started up.

If is noisy in the morning then get it adjusted, but if you drove the car to the workshop and allow the tech to listened to the engine then its a wasted effort.

The noise should not vary much from a cold start to a completely warmed up operating temp engine.

Well on start up it is loud but don't know if that classifies as "noisy"
On idle while driving I can hear the engine but only slightly. I'm going to see them tomorrow so will probably do a video on start up.
