I would say only use MTF3 which is from the UK.

Our MTF6 is pretty much the same as MTF2 from the UK

And how would you fill up the oil? I know there's a drain hole but no filler hole? :/

No problem monkiez. Just remember to put the drain plug back in when filling it back up... unlike this noobies first gearbox fluid change.

Also you will need a pump to get it up into the GBox from below

You could also use the VSS hole on top of the gear box to fill - it requires a bit more effort

Hey team just a suggestion for properly doing the gearbox fluid on a B series -

Do it thru the speed sensor hole. Easy !

Take off rubber vent plug
Drain old fluid - do up the lower plug again.

Grab 2.5 litres of honda or other MTF
Take off 17mm fill bolt on side of diff
Take out VSS and place a pan or take away container under the fill hole.

Place a decent sized hose / tube into the VSS - then lower car to static height / on flat surface. (either put the wheel back on and drop or on decent jack lower it down so the car sits as standard height)

Now , fill the gearbox thru the VSS - put around 2.5 litres thru it until fluid leaks out the standard fill hole on the side of the diff housing.
Once it stops leaking / dripping - this is the perfect amount. Put the 17mm bolt back in , put the VSS back in put everything back on and away you go.

Relevant to all B / D and probably others !

Most oil companies will give you the option of searching on their websites. You'll just have to input your vehicle details and it will come up with their recommended oils.
I personally only use penrite in mine. But that's from years of experience that my father and uncles have had with it. All they use on their big power v8's and show cars.

no need to spend too much on the oils
the Honda gearbox's run in thinner oil than many other gearboxes.

before Honda used to recommend using engine oil in the Manual gearboxes.

Lots of people do it, works fine, done it myself.
The OEM MTF is pretty good, but just for a D16 gearbox or any of the older ones you can use the engine oil. So a 10w 30 would do it.

As for filling,
FIRST remove the fill bolt first!
Then the VSS from the top of the Gearbox. this is one bolt, not the 2 that are opposite of each other, those 2 are holding the VSS together, you remove the other bolt which is longer and will let you pull out the entire VSS. google it.
LASTLY remove the Drain bolt, this way oil drains better and also you don't go taking off the drain before finding out that you cant get the fill bolt off.

When the oil is drained then put the drain plug back in, and fill up from the VSS hole, until oil comes out from the "Fill hole". takes 2-3L

^x2. I use 10-30 engine oil in my d series box after reading up about it online, same as what the previous owner did. Half a million k's later and the box is still good

I might give that a shot for my D-series. Would be cheaper...

Does it matter much if it's synthetic etc?

dont use engine oil unless you dont have anything else. doesnt have proper lubricants for the synchros.
if you cant afford $30 for gearbox oil, sell your car and buy train/bus ticket.

Agreed. Get an MTF oil!
Supercheap have Castrol VMX 80 which is good.
I also like Penrite - quality Australian owned :) (dunno if Supercheap sells their MTF though)
OEM's always good too.

Unless you're running a crazy modified setup these are all perfect.

honda manual for older integras actually specified it anyway MTF and engien oil are nearly same price anyway
