There has been much chatter around the World Wide Web regarding the RE Amemiya Hurricane RX7. So much so that we thought it was time to clear the air. Yes, the Hurricane RX7 has been sold to a new owner. The new owner is a Thai national who will also be competing at Yokohama (http://www.yokohama.com.au/) World Time Attack in Formula D. His name is Nattawoot Krerpradab but he goes by the name of “Oat”.

Oat has long been a client of Amemiya-san’s and is a rotary nut. In fact, RE Amemiya run the mechanical side of Oat’s FD campaign. So when Amemiya-san mentioned that he was thinking of selling the Hurricane to fund a new lightweight time attack project, Oat jumped at the chance and, more to point, committed a budget to continue development and ensure the car competes at WTAC in a much more competitive format.

As the car was originally built as an Autosalon show car, many of the original panels were made from fibre glass and these will all be replaced with lightweight dry carbon versions. The engine power will be increased thanks to a new GCG turbo combination and also some refinements to the aero.

For the past couple of years the “Hurricane” has finished in 6th place outright with an almost identical time of 1.29.8. The fact is though in time attack land, the top end of the field continues to move and for a competitor like Amemiya who has been at the top of his game for many years, it is important that they move back toward the pointy end of the field.

At this point the driver remains TBA but it is highly likely to be a Japanese Super GT driver. It would appear unlikely to be Taniguchi however, as he has commitments with both HKS and Top Fuel for WTAC 2014. Whatever the case there is no question that Amemiya-san has access to the top drivers having ran in Super GT for many years.

The RE20B now sports a GCG GTX4292R turbo, HKS GT waste gates, Trust 3 row intercooler. The clutch is Ogura 5.5inch, 4 plate unit.

With the Mazda 767B making an appearance at World Time Attack Challenge the eyes of the rotary fans around the world will be on the event this year so there has never been a more important time to show a rotary can mix it up with the fastest in Pro Class. One thing is certain, if anyone can do it, it would be RE Amemiya, especially now with some much needed support from Oat!

The suspension, body kit and most aero parts come from the famous RE Amemiya workshop.
