Hi all,

I have an audm 1990 crx ed9

Ive swapped out my d16a8 for a super rare jdm original b16a motor with a y1 lsd that has been converted to obd1.

Engine is running fine except im stuck with how to get vtec working.

So where I'm up to:

- physical engine swap went fine
- had issues with the wrong length lh drive shaft that was causing knocking. Now fixed
- have issues with my iacv but think its just a wiring problem that needs to be redone. Should be finished soon.

Vtec issue I need help with:

So after the swap my speedo stopped working.

From my understanding, vtec will only work if it receives a signal from the vss that runs off the speedo (please correct me if I'm wrong)

So I know this is a sweeping question but how do I get the speedo signal from my new gearbox to the speedo/vss and thus trigger vtec?

ive read through a couple crx swap threads and cant figure it out.

Do I need a new cluster? A new speedo sensor? Can I bypass the vss and just use a vtec controller?

As you can see I confused, auto electronics are not my strong suit....

On the ED9 CRX the VSS is in the cluster. So you have to have the VSS Drive from ED9 in the Y1 box to use it via the cable.

What cabin loom and engine loom are you using ?
What ECU are you using?

With OBDI ECU's VSS check can also be disabled where the ECU does not look for the car traveling above 30km/h to enable VTEC.

Don't even go down the road of a VTEC controller. It will go horribly wrong.

I just wrecked an ed9 with b18c with cable Speedo.

Pm me if you need any parts

Hmm ok I don't have my old engine and box anymore... dammit

Loom is standard, just wired up a jumper from loom to the ecu and re wired the engone bay loom to suit

Ecu is p28

Cbauto - would the vss drive off your b18c fit into a y1 gear box?

Or would this fit too?

Do you mean the s1 and y1 boxes have the same vss cable?

Do you have a electric VSS on your gearbox atm?

The ED9 uses a steel cable to transmit the car speed to the cluster then to the ECU

JDM B16 uses a electric VSS on the gearbox.

When you did the swap, did you remove the cable VSS from the car?

ok,

I was running a b18c type r motor with obd2a engine loom, p30 obd1 ECU, cable speedo

Don't ask me how it works, I didn't do the swap.

Taco modified for type R motor rev limit (accurate)

Nah I didn't, just checked my gbox and the sensor is still in there - electric one - with its harness and plug. Obviously it appears as though my d16 cluster doesn't have the other end to connect.

So potentially cbauto's solution could work?

One last dumb question, the cable connects to the speed sensor which I replace with my electronic one and then continue to use my existing tacho cable?

you have y1 gearbox correct?

you have stock ed9 cluster correct?

buy my speed sensor and cable. will plug directly to your cluster

or buy speed sensor, cable and cluster for 8500 redline.

there is no taco cable.

just plug in the harnesses and should work.

your taco working atm?

Sorry correction p30 from the eg. Yeah ive also got a new map in it in preparation for the t3/4 that's going to be installed once I get the iacv and vtec operating correctly

What's different single cam vtec and double cam vtec when it's ecu related?

in stock form completely different map, tune, rev limit etc. It might run but not very well.

Noticeable power loss with P28 maps on a B16A engine.
