I have a 2012 Accord Euro 2.4 Luxury Auto, which idles at cold start up at 1500 to 1600 RPM.
When warmed up this drops to 1100 RPM. Does anyone have suggestion as to why & what to do?
I have had it at two Honda dealers who reported it was operating within spec, but I don't think this is right? Any help appreciated!

idle after car warms up should be between 550-750 rpm.

Any other you might have a sensor out of sync or something.

I, too, believe this is normal. My 1991 Civic did the same, as does my 2013MY Euro.
Honda said motor was designed that way for a rapid warm-up - and it works!

Hot-idle seems a little fast, though. Mine idles at under 1000RPM.

My hot idle is at 1100 RPM, I think the manual says 750 RPM max. Putting into drive hits with a klunk. I am not sure this is good for the car but no dealer wants to do anything about it. I am out of ideas.

Cold idle should be 1100 rpm, once car was warmed up it shoudl be less than 800 ish.

Is it possible to check the temp sensor for the engine? maybe the ECU is not being told the car had warmed up?

The klunk when putting into drive is normal, thats just how the honda automatic transmission operate.

Hi An idea, for what it is worth:

Start the engine in Neutral, then quickly pull the selector through to S, hit one of the paddles and, once underway, and you've manually changed up to, say, 2nd gear, move the lever back to Drive. I haven't tried it, but could be worth a try and could overcome the bump going into R and then D.

Another thought: Does the motor warm up normally ? If not, the the thermostat could be sticking open (preventing the engine from achieving normal temps) and the fast idle would persist.
My '91 Civic was taking too long to warm up, and was bumping into gear, until the thermostat was changed - at 60,000k's

Years ago, some Volvo motors tended to run-on when the engine was switched off.
So we turned the ignition off with the selector in Drive. Volvo never came up with a fix for the problem (while I had their cars, that is).

Thanks for your reply - Any ideas on how to check TEMP sensor?

Update - Honda dealer cleaned the throttle body - this reduced hot idle from 1100 to 800 RPM, but the dealer said they checked with Honda who said there is no spec on max cold idle speed, which remains at 1600RPM.

How could your throttle body be this dirty on a 2 year old car?

If this helps, my car idles at nearly 2k RPM when cold, gradually dropping to 1.5k within a minute or so.

When warmed up idles at 700. 900ish with AC on.

That was what I asked, the dealer said it was quite dirty & I should clean it each few years.

Thank you for that. My concern is at 1500 RPM when you engage drive, & hurting the transmission?

Seems a good outcome;good to see!

BTW Did the work bring improved fuel economy? My car was 11 months old before first sale, and is a little heavy on petrol, around town, at about 13l/100. Out of town things change. A recent 600k trip, mainly on freeways, returned 7.3l/100k. The car has done 12,000k's.

BTW2 anybody know why Honda puts the fuel figure-sticker, in front of the driver, whereas other makers usually bung it on the other side.

Fuel economy improvement is hard to tell. I assume the reduction in hot idle should be positive to fuel consumption. On freeway driving I can get 7 to 8L / 100K but I also get this from my ten year old VZ Commodore (After I serviced it).
Around Sydney in usual commuter stop start traffic I expect most cars in the 2 to 4LT range will get 12 to 16/100K, it depends mostly on the traffic & having to re accelerate often.
Don't know about the sticker.

As a constant reminder to the driver if he hits VTEC his fuel light is gonna come on.
