Hi

I'ts been awhile since I post any thing on Ozhonda
Anyway I would like to post uo a Restore/Build Thread here

This is my Honda Beat PP1 1991
MTREC 660cc 3 Cylinder Kei Class

I have a soft spot for this little Kei car, been searching localy here in Perth, WA for sometimes and just out of luck! I have found one!

I drove 2.5 hours out of town the next day to go and check her up in the town of DonnyBrook 10-15 min away out of Bunbury

She is just a good runner, i wouldn't call it as in very good conditions as i reckon is OK for the car in her age (24 odd years)

Every thing that is bad with the car

Engine is pretty smokey is like running on 2 stroke
A few check lights / error codes
bonnet didnt line up properly
soft top pretty much rubbish
few clear coat peelings
side mirrors has been dodgy-ly glued on both side to put them together
sun visors has some mirror glued into it
Head unit definately dead, even the cassete deck is dead.
Driver Seat pretty much looks like mice nest
Window Switch is buggered, only works on one side.
A/C not working

Good thing is the car still in presentable conditions
good brakes all around, and still have all the spare tires and soft top covers/toneau.
After Market Wheels don't know what brand is that surely Some kind of JAP with BBG

Normaly, I would walk away with a car in that conditions. But, it's for the first time that this come up for sale in WA (as long as i have been searching for it)
WANTS out weight Common Sense Scenario...

Yes, there is a few for sale over in other states Now and then (probably 2 cars a year). But the cost of transport, inspection and registration are going to cost too much for me.
I rather to get a Fixer Upper and could enjoy Building the car and putting it to it's former glory.

First car wash just a few hours after I Picked her up

https://scontent.fper4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10710700_10152716563695953_7770694905211901637_n.j pg?oh=d43d71d8a45fcc8fb144e521a7e6a9ee&oe=59D6303C

she comes up looking good! other than the bonnet gap...

Diagnosing Check light, checking up spark plugs

https://scontent.fper4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10304776_10152715112005953_4581702913901257455_n.j pg?oh=53dd1823858bcc5f4bc2d6fcca3066ed&oe=5A0C27E0

Has 2 Error Code, Code 8 and Code 9
8 TDC SENSOR
9 No.1 CYLINDER POSITION (CYL SENSOR)

which pretty much saying that the Distributor unit and it's sensor pick up point pretty much dead.

also checked on ignition timing and, it was way! out of the factory spec. i redialed it back to 20 deg BTDC at 1200rpm (warm)
Dropped the oil and did a little tune up with some synthethic oil in.

It runs way much better! and The smokes are now barely noticeable, It does blow grey/very faint blue under Load, also does smell like burn oil and running rich.
I suspect the rings or the guides are worn, also the running rich due to the Limp mode from the Faulty Distributor.

Parked up in the garage next to the wife's Fiat Abarth 500 Essesses

https://scontent.fper4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10373502_10152721032495953_5298536828182002570_n.j pg?oh=d48fedf4e1a954a2ee3651fad9425f7c&oe=5A02B931

It was about the same length, just half in height LOL

I managed to Spent few hours to Re-Align the bonnet, now, the gaps are almost even and looks way better!
Repositioning the hinges, putting few spacers and wallah!

Its not a perfect alignment as i found out the bonnet had a prank sometimes in it's life as i can spot some area that has been pulled and fixed back to shape.
this is the best i could do to make it look good. although it annoys me but this will do until i could get some spare bonnet (That if i can find one localy)

Mean while I have been Trolling Yahoo japan for the Honda Beat parts.. Geez! i could not stop! after a day of hunting with the help good friend of mine @ JDM AUTOLINK

Managed picked up a few parts

In perth, WA I only ever saw once a couple years back and It was a yellow one with an old man driving it.

TBH I did try to stalk him but I was on opposite side of the highway and by time I turned arround I never saw the car again. :(

everything is possible! just depends how far do you want to go with it and also how deep is your pocket...

I'm looking to drop the engine by end of this year, and see what possibility I have.
1st option as I said before i'm just looking to rebuilt the engine, bad thing is parts is so scare. I have to look into UK or Jap market for it.

Forged Piston/ring set (3) is costing about $1500 already... that's more expensive than a forged K piston or B !!

2nd option is engine transplant from Busa/K swap/B swap, rebuilt the current motor for spare.
I also rather to go with the B swap, as now they are pretty cheap to come by and also i'm not so sure what works need to be done until I drop the whole current E07A engine and all its sub frame.

For B Swap There is no Kit, or instruction manual other than the Link to the guy in US that did it. Wether it is complete or not Now one knows.. as he stop updating the threads for many years.

BYS B18CR swap (just pictures)

I have not yet finalised what I want to do with it. For now, I just get some parts and let see where i'm heading in few months time.

so im just enjoying the moment, just getting the car running and drives so I could cruise around polluting the air with burnt oil smell smoke LOL.

Had some free time over the weekend to tinker something with the car.

I have not actualy opened up the Airbox and see the conditions of the air filter

here is the airbox after opening up the rear trunk panel

To my supprise when i Open up the Air box, there is some kind of Vortex generators. Presumably is made in Japan? LOL
definately some one is trying to push a little more power out of this 660 E07A motor..

I Didn't bother to take photo of the Intake panel.
It's full of red dust and alots of funny kind of things.. it just way beyond it usage life..

So this is what is under that Panel filter, a Dirty Intake area.
https://scontent.fper4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10678847_10152746356940953_7896180983429080565_n.j pg?oh=677c1b75f19f7150922c7e5d056d7cb2&oe=59D6E3C8

So then i deploy this Cleaning unit army
A little bit of scrubs, and cleaning up all the engine bay connectors in hope that i clear that check light (nope still got check light :p).
loosen up a few linkages and make sure they are well oiled

After few T/B cleaner and a few bit of cleaning, come out quite nicely.

I started the car up with out the airbox and WHOAAAHH!! the noise of that ITB was so angry!

At the end of the day, I decided to just put an air ducting system to it, and leave the air box out for now. it's summer time anyway, don't think water is going in there and also the noise is just too good to be not heard lol..

Here is the Video that i Took while take the car for a spin. Again.. Excuse the Video, Just listen to the sound :p
The car was so small, I do not know where to put my mobile phone on...

Well, that didn't take long....

Drove the car on Monday to work, and back home. a little bit of spirited driving on way home (who can resist that i/t/b sound!)
parked it inside the garage and it just doesn't wants to start back up on tuesday night.

It crank over, and sounded like it just doesnt want to start.

it has fuel - Fuel pump primes. Plugs taken out and was flooded with fuel.
it has spark - checked the distributor and check for spark

I ran through all the check list, and even tried with with Nulon 'Start you bastard' Ether spray, Nope.. its not responding either.

So after all that frustration I decided to Take appart what ever i can anyway.

I then can reveal the ECu behind the Passanger seats panels so then Checked the ECU, everything looks good. No burnt or leak diodes.
Tested the main relay, and its ticked over.

all the rear trims are stripped out, im leaving the fronts one for now.

Will continue tonight, firstly with compression test (just got a compression tester from a mate) to confirm that i have No compressions. If that doesnt goes to well, i'll be stripping out the fuel tank and drive shaft.

So... Guess this becoming a project faster than i taught it would be...

Just did a compression Test last night, and they come out quite ok except for Cylinder 1.

CYLINDER 1- 125 PSI
CYLINDER 2 - 155 PSI
CYLINDER 3 - 155 PSI

Stock compression Ratio is at 10:1 so guestimate when it's new should be arround 180-190 psi.
Not bad for a 23 year old engine.

So narrowed down to the distributor that is faulty. I have a couple of check light last time which I couldn't clear it.
One of them is the TDC sensor and the other is the No 1 Cyl sensor

Just FYI I do have sparks, the Coil is external, not inside the distributor.
Took the whole distributor assembly out the other day, and it does convince me that the distributor pick up point / the TDC sensor is rooted.
it was full of rust and overall wasn't in such a good condition. I did a clean on it, with contact cleaner and WD40. I might have made it worst LOL...

So my guess is that the ignition timing is sparking at totaly wrong timing and that why it doesn't wants to turn over.

I do have a replacement part for the whole distributor assembly, but it wouldn't come for another month as is was put together with other parts that i bought and it's inside a container that my mate bringing in to Perth.

I also have a spare b16 engine/box set up that needs to be assembled, so mean while i probably just finish the b16 and get it all together before is start pulling appart the current engine that is in The Beat as I wanted to wait for the new replacement distributor to come and then check if the current distributor is the culprit.

I think is a common thing with the beat to have that problem.
I've searched through the net, and most of the guys do have the same issue.
Cylinde 1 sensor and TDC sensor.

I do have the replacement Dizzy coming to test it out.

But I couldn't help my self to wait for the parts to arrive next month and just bought a replacement engine and going to pick it up over the weekend.

Some generic photos that you guys know...
http://image.ec21.com/image/indotraknus/oimg_GC06323690_CA06323691/Acura_Rsx_K20a_R_Engine.jpg

EP3 K20A2 EDM / UK Spec
EP3 Gear Box non LSD but has an OS Giken LSD
Engine Loom
ECU
Shifter linkages

But it's missing a few things like Intermediate shafts, Drive Shafts, and clutch slave.
which may not be hard to find.

They way I probably mounted would be similar to Z car arrangement

http://www.clubmanestates.myqth.co.uk/MITP2005/zcars4.jpg

http://car-from-uk.com/ebay/carphotos/full/ebay515118.jpg

I did a preliminary Measurements from the K20 and the b18c they are not much different in sizes.

From my rough measurements, K20 would still sit between the chassis rail of the Beat. and just got to figure out how high would the engine fit.

so the main hurdle right now would be
Engine mounts
Wiring
Drive shafts
and engine cover to close up.

we see how it plan out, It probably be the first k20 Honda beat

Got the Sellers place and we went over it and checked everything is good.

This is what my Findings:

- Rocker cover has been repainted at some stage, Knock sensor was snapped during transport
- Seller could not find the ECU and the Shifter cable :(
- oil looks cleaned
- Checked the Engine, Crank it over. Everything looks good Except for the surface Rust...
Those Rust from UK.. makes it look like it was found from the THAMES RIVER!! LOL
- Since the Box doesn't come with LSD, the seller passed me a LSD and it was not OS Giken :( as he was advertised earlier. It's a standard Helical LSD. Oh Well better than Nothing ;)

At the end of that I Got cheaper price than what was agreed on with some of those circumstances.

So after all that commotions in the afternoon, I then got straight to BTMotorsports Workshop and Drop it to the Old Man.

Results come out pretty good!
Cold Crank, T/B wide open

210 210 210 210 consistant on all 4 cylinders

It will be awhile may be a month or two before i start working on Beat Conversion.
as I'm still in the middle of working with EG Civic... chasing up for the race on summer ! a fair bit to go lol...

Just have Too many projects at one time X_x LOL....
Will keep this updated

Awesome! Not sure if it's just me but most of the pics aren't showing up?

I also picked up a Beat about a year ago. It's a '95 Version-Z but I was quite lucky cos mechanically and aesthetically it's in pretty good knick. Puffing a bit of smoke under load and plenty of engine/trans oil leaks but still runs smooth as anything. I'm also planning to do an engine swap but will be going B-series (built B18CR on ITB's out of my track car). Already have another project so the Beat will have to wait a little while until the transplant. Also want to upgrade my brakes cos I find stock ones to be pretty average. Will try and make 242mm EG rotors and calipers fit up front. Haven't mocked up yet so not sure how easy it'll be... Look forward to seeing your updates and progress!

This is my baby, pics taken early this year. Sitting on Trust coils and staggered 14/15" TE's... also picked up a set of 14" Mugen NR10's for it so look forward to chucking them on for summer!

Waiting to get a new set of tires before i mount them in ;)
The current tires are pretty much dead, and also developed a flat spot due to been sitting in the garage for a couple of months LOL

This is why the car wasn't moving for a few months
The culprits - a Dead distributor which had a failed Cylinder sensor and also its totally rooted. had fuel and crank over, has spark but the timing was way out! therefore the car didn't want to start.

I just installed the new replacement Dizzy, and Wallah! the car now lives again another day polluting the air with some blue smokes, until the K20 find its way to the new home.

New Radio system Installed, 30x4W System with Aux modified!

My stock ones pretty much dead, no sound coming out of it, even the Cassette player was gutted out!, wonder who would do such things.... oh well! now i have music playing and a working radio.

I didnt had the chance to put on the dash speakers just yet, as It needs couple of holes to be drilled to secure them in and run the cable with. I probably would like to do it when i do wirings for the K20 stuff.

although i did test the speakers and they sounded awesome! 2 sets of 3 hi range speakers. That is more then enough in the small car.

I also installed the HKB Boss kit, Steering Spacer and Momo Coarse Steering wheel

Well im 185 cm and 105 kg. that seats and steering wheel set up makes me do Yoga pose every time i get it and out... Good thing this wasn't a daily LOL!

as current stance, half stripped! well, it was stripped, then when it decided to start again with the new dizzy, I put back some of the stuff, so i could drive around in it. I forgot how fun was it to drive in this car!
Oh! i also replaced the side mirrors as they were failing and wobbles around the place. Some one decided to just Sikaflex the mirror to stay put, and it annoys the hell out of me. well for now I can live with different coloured mirrors.

Looking good mate! Perfect ride height. How much lower (roughly) will the bottom of the K sit compared to the stock E07? I'm guessing running it current height will be out of the question?

If you ever get a new rear bar and don't need those rear mud flaps I'll take them off your hands ;) can't seem to find any sets on YJ and mine had them missing.

When I did a preliminary measurement, to keep the lowest part of the K motor where the E motor sitting, the Engine has to stick out more from the compartment.

So the stock rear engine bay cover is no longer could fit, and require custom covers.
also not to mention that we have to consider the drive shafts loaded and unloaded angle so that it wouldn't bind over the U joint knuckle.

As per height, don't think the current height would stay. We're thinking of putting at least a 205 tires at rears and that requires some wide fenders and some body modifications. well they all still under "planning"

I'll keep you all posted once I get into this stage. just got to move a few cars out from the workshop before i can get into this part LOL.

As per rear bar, I actually just bought a new set of full body kit from US Racing Japan. But I might keep the stock bumpers for now :p just incase i would like to go back to stock looking.

Hit up my mates at Eujin @ JDM Auto Link. i'm sure he would be able to find some for you.

This is my favourite car on all of ozhonda :D

Cheers :D

Gladd! we have the hoist... was so much easier to drop the engine down than taking it out from the top...
few mounting bolts, and trolley table under it. a litte bit of elbow grease and air tools. The mighty 3 cylinder is finally out!

The hardest bit is to try figure out what things need to take out, We so used to work with B series, EG, EK chassis and this is something new.
But we got there and now that K20 is looming over it ready to jump in there... LOL

to my suprise, it has been opened before and has a shifter fork changed, i guess it was common on EP3 on having a shitty fork then?
and we are replacing the Open diff with the spare JDM Torsen LSD we have out of the race car. I'm taking a gamble on the synchros.. we'll see... may be plan change due to weather? LOL

I did another measurement, looks like there is going to be a cut and box up section needs to be applied to the chassis, for now i have not put the engine to the the engine bay yet, as we were busy doing other things during the holiday period.
I have to rush up to finish up the race car, before i can work on this again. By the time holiday finishes i have ran out of time to do anything! geeezz time flies...

Well that's it for me, Will update more if anything changes! :)

Thanks

Well sorry for the long delay of updates on this Beat..

Have been busy working on my other toy.. the K20 EG race car.

cant juggle 2 project at one go, when technically only have 1 or 2 day a week to work on cars... such is life.. LOL.

Still be focusing on the civic for a couple more weeks, then I'll be starting to mocking up engine mounts for the beat.

I just finish putting the ITR Torsen LSD from the Civic K20 to the Beat Ep3 K20 Box.
The Civic received a new Spoon 1.5 Way LSD.

Talking about recycling parts...

any one wants an open diff from the EP3? ... hahahaha.

Checking up Snychros and gear sets...

Little help offered here for folk looking for jdm parts.

I used to import jap performance cars to UK.
I used a Japanese bloke called Ido Kats.

He is a Yahoo.co.jp middle man and can get you anything at all...
He's on Facebook but I moved to oz so no longer do the parts and performance parts game.

a little tight there i think.

Dummy position. and it still needs to move up 150mm up more.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/p843x403/11150444_10153220856250953_8950581751455477811_n.j pg?oh=360b467132ee76d2ce471fa0f2f38fac&oe=55E5F920&__gda__=1436157144_bf6f8eeb964020bfaf10872f931eb0f 2

I have lots of rooms to move the engine back and forward, the not side ways.
I have to create a notch on the left chassis frame to accommodate the gearbox.

The gearbox are bigger than what i expected to be.
I'm trying to keep all the suspension geometry as is and not too much mucking around with it.
but i think i might have to fabricate a new rear left trailing arm / swing arm. as it might faults the lower of the box.

from Frame to Frame i could clear all the auxiliary belts and shifter linkage system on the box.
and once it clears 150mm, the lower point of the engine is roughly the same as the lower point of the floor of the car.

Cross finger... :p We see how we go today, and how much i can work on it. I should have an mock up mount in and getting a rough fix position where i want to be.

consider making up a "beer case box" ( cardboard from cases cut and taped into the rough shape of the engine and box)
I did this and it hugely helped with a B into a mini. Back and forth - worked out dimensions / firewall cutting etc

TBH They are very hard to come by with the Multiple humps. I did pay for a fair price for it considering the conditions of the gel Coat etc. Nothing a lick of fresh paint cant do.
And these hard top price has gone up to the roof on Yahoo auction... I did not want to spent up to $3000 on a Mugen one...
Car worth less than 5k and a Roof that worth 3k? Must be joking....

Well! now as the engine taking to "final" mock up position

Hanged with top engine craddle with a makeshift support so it would give a bit more working space underneath it.

we did more cheese cutting through the metals etc and finaly have some idea where it will be sitting and how it would clear the subframe etc.
with the engine supported from the top and now the nd engine is adjusted with gearbox jack into the position.
this allow us to bolt back all the subframes and arms to positions. (ignore the arm angle, coilovers are set on the lowest possible setting)

https://scontent-hkg3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/p843x403/11412350_10153324418350953_1824989825203898235_n.j pg?oh=1f11c68eae53be37063692bde2ccfdfa&oe=55E69BCC

Sub frame have to be spaced out to clear the hump of the gear box (final drive) and we make shift a couple piece of woods, one on each side. (this would be made out from a correct steel thickness and laser cut on final product)

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/11141352_10153324418610953_3735257515857282716_n.j pg?oh=1d6747f559f0f00caf25529ac0132ad4&oe=55F5231C&__gda__=1442391096_e0d8809e2e9c341bc42bcd150ea826a a

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xat1/v/t1.0-9/p843x403/11393209_10153324418475953_6179414793707471893_n.j pg?oh=7933924bcde46ad21295a31c2807121f&oe=55FB27D0&__gda__=1441574353_28fdec5970825fc7f8b44db4ba2831f f

So close but not close enough. I still need to raise the suspension up by the end of the day to compensate the increase height of the subframe. also this would give me more clearance on the rear trailing arm and most importantly to give me more clearance for the SUMP!.

Now I'm going to back to the drawing board, and making task before the next step:

designing some Plates to be laser cut for this to have the Subframe to be Fixed in place and properly bolted
Suspension to raise / utilise stock shocks for time being
Arms to clear gearbox cast housing.
Re strengthening the Subframes (fully boxed, stiffen and welded)
Re strengthening the Chassis rail that has been modified to clear the engine (Tubed, gusseted, Thicken wall)

one all of that above is done,
We will start looking into the Engine mountings
Drive shafts (OH!! This is going to be nightmare...)

This has becoming real! glad I only have to do it once! LOL.

Sending to drive shaft shop in 2 days. ;)

Final placement of engine is done.

Engine is supported by its own mount.

Once the drive shaft is good to go, pulling out the engine and start tiding up the engine bay.

Grind off welds, rubber coated the weld and paint...

Slow progress 😂

After digging a few FB post I have some pictures that may be worthy to share...

I Finally got my shipment of the parts from Japan.

it was bigger than i taught it would.
First of all, I went on a Friday after knock off early from work to the airport cargo area and found out the Ute that i borrowed from my mate, is not going to fit all of the items.

I ended up spending a good hour or so wondering arround the airport complex to get my AirWay bill cleared out form custom
Forwarder Dock - Custom house (custom fee $) - Freight broker (Release fee $) - Custom house (stamp) - dock (wow that is a big packages)

Went back the following day (Saturday) and this time i was well prepared with a 6x4 trailer on tow!

This is a much as i could get.
it sits as far up as possible - and yet to retain the straight shaft as you can see on above image drive shaft have to be almost inline

sits as far back as possible for the drive shaft to sit yet again alsmot inline

after speaking to a few drive shaft shop, i found the right guy to manufacture it.
we shall see how we go on this current mounting position.

once the drive shaft is done, Engine is again coming out to get fully serviced
Belts, injectors cleaned, broken sensor replaced etc.

then finalized the weld and tidying it up.
seal the weld and spray of new paint on the bay.

at the moment its all just 50-50 on temporary and fully welded.
lots of tidy up to do so, I'll keep you guys updated how i go with the shaft.

After ALLL THAT!
then i will start the wiring and lastly, shifter linkage hahahah! i hvnt actualy look into this yet but, yes is still do able may be in reverse mode

so just a short up date this time, I got the CV joints made by Alan's CV Joints

Cut and sleved joints and heat treated.

Almost impossible to make on one of them due the stubby short lenght, but we just got there..

They look pretty good, we shall see how they perform once its mounted.

I have been looking into this lately.
Namely a few kits that is available for Elise-s K swap kit

SunSpeed
EliseParts
Innovative

They are utilizing Stock Elise Shifter cables and adapt it to K series box
with Adjustable Ball joints

For example - Innovatives design
http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/images/INM-50908.jpg

The Beat it self already have a Cable shifter (like the K) just in different stroke length,
This adjustable method can be utilized, something similar to this

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xtp1/v/t1.0-9/12247152_10153645396735953_3047391881699160864_n.j pg?oh=ad2aa79dd21468840b1c2281a087cf24&oe=56F47A91&__gda__=1459280724_d0a2a1116ffcefa8847bebd5bebc68e e

Or I could even shortened the Stock beat cables and use the adjustable Link for fine tune it.

will look into this once the engine is back in with the shaft etc. Really keen to make it work! ;)

Well may be about a year pass since last update.
due some change in circumstances (Life) this has been put on the back burner while other things are going on. BUT Yes this Project is still going and finishing it is not clear in sight yet LOL!

I have finish mocking up the rear subframe to mounts the engine up and i have sent it to a fabies to make a new tubular frame. Which would be alot better than my hack / mock up frame.

Subframes now has been jigged up

this should be done for test fitting in the next week or two.
I have the frames dropped last year November, and fabricators has taken his own sweet time to fab it up! although i did tell him no "rush".

The imported panels and body parts are now painted, just awaiting for the frames to be done so i could roll up the car and get the body re-painted.

Well, "THAT" circumstance that change resulted in selling the EG race car.
So i took the motor out from it and replace with my UKDM EP3 motor and sold the EG with that.

So the beat now will rock my race car engine and box.
JDM k20, 5.1, 1.5 spoon lsd, BC Cams, Skunk2 I/m,K-Pro, I/H/E blah blah blah
was tune to 242hp (hub)

so either i become a hero or potatoed my self when driving *touch wood.

Front Brake upgrade - DC2R Calliper! Got to love Honda puzzle kit

They bolt up nicely, I’m yet to buy 4 studs 280 mm disc to test this out properly, but it can be down the track as currently I’m still focusing to get the engine settled in.
Just an update for the subframe – It finally at the final stage! We are able to test fit to the car and my Fabricator has done a great job!

Lot of clearances and ½ the weight of the original subframe. The subframe will still need a few more bracings and engine mounts to be placed in.

So close but yet so far to finishing. Oh well! At least I have made some major progress.
Cheers
