Le Mans – 1956
The 1950’s was an era when automotive technologies started to advance. Improved engine designs allowed for higher revving engines with more power. Along with these advancements, came new lubricant technology. Additives started to become common place to provide greater detergency, heat stability and resistance to wear when compared to lubricants based on formulations prior to 1950.

Le Mans Classic 2012
Fast forward to today and we now have highly refined engines exceeding the envelope on power/capacity (BHP/CC) putting an ever increasing demand on the lubricant in use.
All while Motul is at the forefront of the latest technology, the needs of engines from the yesteryear are not forgotten.

There is 3 main Era’s of engine technology:
1. Pre-1950
In this Era you will find Leather used in some engines as Main and Big End bearing material. The soft metals were not so well refined and gaskets were made of paper or cork.Felt was used as seal material. Some additives had negative impacts on these materials.
2. 1950-1970
Materials used when manufacturing engines in this Era were more refined and developed than previously allowing for additives to provide great protection, cleanliness and lifespan. In this Era rubber gaskets were starting to be used along with many other advanced materials becoming common practice.
3. Post-1970
It is at this time production engines would rev higher, have greater power per cc, and be more fuel efficient thanks to newer material technologies and manufacturing advances. All soft metals were highly refined and most engine manufacturers started moving over to elastomer sealant and seals.

If you have a classic car or maintain one from any of these Era’s, Motul has what you need.

The MOTUL Historic Range is easily recognisable by the classic MOTUL logo in a black metal tin. Like taking a time machine back to the past, these era-specific engine oils are compatible with your classic vehicle’s engine components with the benefit of being updated with Motul’s modern refining processes. Many classic car owners aim to keep their vehicles period correct, but why should this stop with accessories? MOTUL have taken a step into the past to bring you classic car lubricants that are compatible with your pre-70s car or motorcycle.
