View Full Version : H22A4 Engine Ticking

Hey OzHonda,

Lately I've noticed on and off that my engine seems to tick a fair bit. It's currently sitting on 217xxx kms and I personally think I need a valve adjustment. My friend seems to think it's rod knock but the engine doesn't seem like it's loosing power (despite down low with CAI causing a little bit of lag).

I will be double checking where the sound may be coming from sometime soon but I was wondering how much a valve adjustment would cost roughly? Will it be able to stop the ticking noise if it is a valve adjustment issue?

Thanks.

Shouldn't cost too much, if you do it yourself, it's cheaper (obviously), it's pretty easy too

Thanks Renzo, I'll most likely get a mechanic to do it just because I'm not all to good with doing any sort of mechanical work like that.

I'm guessing this isn't to bad though? I want to check where the sound is coming from really soon.

Take a vid

Is it while the car is cold or is it cold and warm?

My white prelude had loud valve clearances, it doesn't effect much at all to be honest.

It was like a truck in the morning, but when warmed up it was fine.

If it's injectors it's fine too

It happens in both cold and warm. At times I don notice that it stops and then comes back but.

It does seem noticeable when warm but still does it when cold.

If I have sometime I will try to make a vid.

Get a long screwdriver and put it on the injector and put it to your ear
Then compares with putting the screwdriver on the rocker cover

Thanks Renzo and Jasemas. Will update this thread with findings and hopefully a video this week or next week.

If it's an injector issue would they just need to be replaced?

Or they'll need to be removed from the car and flow tested & cleaned

Good idea. Once I get a video or even get a long screw driver to the injectors and valve cover, I'll find out where the sound is coming from.

I used the screw driver method to find a sound that was actually the power steering pump, in which it was replaced.

Sick
Just make sure it's done on a 'stone cold engine'
i.e left over night

What happens if it isn't?

What happens if it isn't?

The valve adjustment readings will be inaccurate
And you may over tighten a valve & burn it up
Honda's need to be adjusted stone cold

Wut fuel have you been using? If you mostly fill up 98 i doubt its the injectors.

It has to be done cold as metal expands/distorts with temp. It even says it on the sticker on the bonnet. What clearance it should be on both sides.

Having bad clearances can leave you broken down. I've been there, don't let it go for too long.

I only run 98.

For some reason, my car was getting other things fixed also and it never got a valve adjustment. I'm now looking for places other then Honda that would actually do it.

I have since decided to service my car myself after I got it back twice with issues (loose wheel nuts first, then a vacuum leak).

Update: Have got a screw driver and placed it pretty much above my headers near the valves and I can hear the noise quite clearly.

I put it on the valve cover and couldn't hear it as much.

The noise is getting louder and I believe now and adjustment won't fix this issue.

Get valve adjustment first, I used to have valve slap a little on my bb5, didn't even worry me man. Tbh h22s are so cheap anyway, why not just drive it until it blows, do a swap, ez

Thanks Renzo. I'll get the adjustment as soon as I can and see what happens.

H224A has LMA installed which means they have a Valve spring that is different than the previous models which can be renewed as it is with previous.

Previous models can be upgraded with current LMA'S

I have adjusted my 99 Honda Prelude SH several times to the min spec.

I always hit the limits and had Valve bounce with the limit kicking in.

I now have adjusted them to the largest gap advised and it sounds like a diesel truck! BUT!

I do not hit the limit and go over and get better high range performance.

If you want no ticking use the minimum limit if you want performance use the maximum and sound like a diesel truck!

I don't like the noise but LUV the performance!

Good Luck from Vancouver, Canada!
