Hi all,

My name is Steve (aka Dutchy) and have a Supercharged mini. (Dutchysmini.com) I have just bought a Honda B16A Vtec to retrofit into my mini (massive job but I am up for the challenge) Quite common in the US. Check out superfastminis.com

I mainly joined to learn more about the JDM B16A engines and what mods people are doing in Aus as I am always looking for ideas to upgrade. This is my toy car so there is always a project on the go of some sort. with more than 14 years experience in automotive parts I hope I can also add some useful info to relevant posts along the way.

Cheers,
Dutchy

most minis with engine conversions come from Europe / UK.

anything else just ask - I might know a thing or two ;0)

Thanks Bennjamin. I am all over that site and other mini Vtec sites however as they are overseas there aren't many contacts or info on Australian Honda's. I am going to need to source info and parts from Aus civics so thought it would be good to get on board here.

You should look up a guy named peter dutton. He has a b16a Leyland clubman and is in melb.
I have a couple of minis aswell, good luck with the. Swap

Is he on this forum or do you know how I can contact him?
Google only some MP in QLD.
He must be using another name for his profiles.

Mini + Honda = Awesome

Keen 4 build

Dutchy1978
07-03-2015, 06:31 PM
I'm keen too however currently have a badly broken leg so there will be a delay of a few months before I start.
I will probably run two build threads. 1 in a mini specific forum for the feedback of other mini enthusiasts and 1 here for the Honda gurus to assist with the engine, Ecu and wiring related gear. That way I get the best result possible.

Standby to standby.....

It is now time. I have decided to move forward with a build thread. If there is any Honda info that I have missed or should be mindful of then don't hesitate to chime in.

Here we go.

My current mini engine details are below and can be found on http://www.dutchysmini.com/supercharging.html :

88 Rover mini
1275 Manual - Standard bottom end
Ported head, 35mm inlet valves
Ceramic coated Exhaust manifold
Eaton M45 Supercharger
Custom made inlet manifold
3 x 646cc Siemens injectors
2 core radiator
new clutch & seal
Autronic SM3 ECU (SM4 firmware)

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170818/c4f68a7c09dd0beb3e887b1e9fe6d79f.png

The Honda:
I purchased a JDM B16A complete with manifolds, 5spd transmission, ECU, engine wiring, gear linkages, driveshafts & dash cluster.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170818/9d47edf5645b9efb6d1406db3bd6223d.jpg

I am aiming to build my own frame to fit the B16A into my round nose without extending or modifying the front.
Tough ask from what people on the mini forums are saying. Mainly due to the Australian requirements for engineering and registration
I have discussed with my engineer who has given me all the relevant info to get it passed and registered.

IN the mean time, a few goodies have been purchased.

Wilwood Pedal kit from Minitec
Minisport 4 piston calipers & 8.4" vented and slotted front discs
Stainless exhaust manifold
New Radiator & hoses
Second hand rocker cover - cleaned and blasted ready for red wrinkle paint

I was considering buying a half cut and working with that for the subframe build but after much thought i think it will be better to use my body and strip my engine out.
Before I do I was was thinking of seeing what interest is out there for my complete engine with supercharger and ECU. You could pretty much drop it in, wired it in and away you go.

Any ideas on what it would be worth? if anyone is interested then PM me to discuss. l want to leave it in the vehicle for serious buyers to test drive before pulling it out. Based in Melbourne VIC.

Cheers,
Dutchy

It will be a slow project but I will keep you all updated.

From what I've seen/read up on a standard roundie front isnt big enough for a b series and thats why most people use clubbies.
Have you seen the project binki build on youtube?
Those guys are using a complete celica gt4 engine and full running gear into a mini so anything can be done depending on how you want to go about it.
The other guy in Victoria with a b16a clubman, I'll try find his contact details for you
Check project binki on youtube I, recommend it to everyone

I have met Peter Dunn and been for a drive in his Vtec Clumbman. It goes well.
I know it can be done it is just going to require patience. Funnily enough something I lack. Ha
The Binki clips on YouTube are quite good. Some serious money spent here. This is pretty much a new she'll and looks ridiculously heavy in the front. It will be interesting to see how it goes with all the weight.

Just a thought about frames

Get a kit , don't make your own. Either Minitec B kit , or ALLSPEED to suit your round nose are FINE.

A custom kit kit will require you do a series of load tests and add significant cost to your project where a pre made kit can have written tests already accessible proving they are OK for stress tests etc.

Dutchy1978
07-06-2015, 01:55 PM
There is really one one kit that will fit in a round nose and maintain the original track. Landed here from the UK is about $3k.
Engineer said car drawings will determine the crash resistance.
The minitec frame widens the track which is a no no if I want it to be registered. This frame also requires too many body modifications for a RHD vehicle.
Best to make my own to suit I think.

bennjamin
07-06-2015, 07:57 PM
I don't know what you refer to but the ALLSPEED kit maintains original tracking - it uses the original suspension !
I paid about $2800 for the kit landed.

This is far cheaper than making one yourself - engineering it and probably destroying it in the process. Just a thought.

I haven't followed the 16v conversion mini scene for a while, last I'd heard was people had to extend roundie fronts about 3 inches to squeeze in b series motors. Most ended up with fibreglass flip fronts. Good to hear they got around it.
With the binki build im not sure about lots of money going into it, its really only their time and effort. The build is just impressive to watch how they hit hurdles and work around them in a easy to follow manor.
It will be heavier but minis aren't balanced to begin with, having the diff in the rear could balance it better. Standard A series and box weighs 150kg, doubt the 3sgte weighs more then that

Clubman front? Looks like heaps more room than have

yeah - but the length is practically the same. Its the rounded top end on yours which plays with space. Where yours rounds down mine goes practically straight. You will have to cut a chunk more out of the drivers side fender front area to fit your radiator. All other dimensions are actually the same and pretty spacious.

I started draft 1 of my subframe on the weekend and dropped the engine in. As expected the steering rack is going to cause problems. As its in the way of the diff. Some modification required!

I Used 50x25 RHS but thinking it might need to be 40x25

The engineer had approved. 38x25x1.6 RHS All Gal tubing so I have just ordered it and pick it up Thursday. Ready for the weekend.

On another note, I have cut away another 5-7mm from the rack and sealed it back up. Every mm helps

bennjamin

Nope. All internal

Dont mind me asking - in making your own frame wouldn't there have to be a seperate frame made for stress analysis ? Big $$$ to get it ready and legal for engineering then blue slipping ?

Hondarally
26-09-2015, 09:18 AM
And in calculating the strength of the design, the Engineer would make certain assumptions regarding weld strength, HAZ etc. From what I can see of the welds, I would struggle to assign any sort of reasonable strength, fatigue or geometric load factors to those welds.

Not trying to criticise or be a dick, but welding critical structures should be left to the experts, and what I can see of the tack welds, that's not expert workmanship.

Dutchy1978
26-09-2015, 02:50 PM
Thanks for your feedback.
I am not worried about the tack welds as that is all they are. Tacks. It will be welded up correctly once it is all lined up and fits

Quite a interesting build you have going there, I raced Super Mini's back in the late 70's and early 80's and now have a Honda, weird ha. There are a few honda powered Minis still racing around these days if you are in NSW maybe try to get to a meeting and check out their set up's.
Or check out Facebook NSW Suoer Mini Racing page maybe contacts who can give advice.
Back in the day we used to raise the front upper control arm to help the drive shaft run straight to prevent excessive wear on the CV joints.
Good luck with the build.

Leaving the brakes till the engine is back in so I moved over to the clutch master cylinder.
Straight out of a civic. I made a 38mm high mount which came up quite well. A coat of paint makes it even better.
The pedal seems fits well and doesn't seem to over throw either. It will be another one of those things to be tested when it is running.

Have you pondered engineering as of yet ? That will be another time and money waster at the end of your build. I estimate $1500-2500 ontop for the engineering side.

PS if you haven't , make sure to have steel brake lines not copper. They will fail the engineering , and considerably dangerous

Dutchy1978
29-01-2016, 07:02 PM
All sorted. I have been working with an engineer on everything I'm doing so it won't be a problem. Brake lines are pretty much done and yes they are steel.

My engineer is charging about $1000 for the VASS and that's it. I will need to get an emissions test done because I am using an aftermarket ECU. Thats another $600

Miniman_Alis
31-01-2016, 11:20 AM
Why don't you use a stock ecu so you don't have to get an emissions test

bennjamin

Why don't you use a stock ecu so you don't have to get an emissions test

And then once passed just pop the standard ECU back on....

Mind you I can't see anything on your car that requires a tuneable ECU.

Dutchy1978
31-01-2016, 08:18 PM
The Autronic (tuneable) is already installed as it ran my supercharged engine. I was and probably am still in two minds which way to go.
The Autronic will need tuning once done but quicker to wire up the engine considering it is in the car already. It will cost more in tuning though.
The stock ECU I have is a chipped P28 but I am unsure how reliable this will be. It didn't come out of the same car so I would be hoping it is tuned correctly for the engine. The engine is a B16A with an Integra type R inlet manifold and throttle body. I ordered a chip advising the supplier of this info but I am putting my trust into someone online that it is right and won't destroy the engine.
On another note, If I make any mods later like cams and the likes then I am probably best to have the Autronic. If I do it now I won't have to do it twice (stock then tuneable)

Hence the two minds.

Miniman_Alis
31-01-2016, 09:22 PM
You should just get a Hondata s300 it's the stock ecu(the P28 is the best ecu to use for this) with a USB cable so you can tune it locally. I am using this on 3 of my Hondas.

Telling someone overseas to tune your car is not the best way to go about it.

Dutchy1978
01-02-2016, 06:42 AM
Why would I buy a Hondata if I already have a tuneable ECU that's already fitted?
Either way they both need tuning. I am then just spending more money on a Hondata S300 aren't I? What are the benefits of the Hondata over mine?

Miniman_Alis
01-02-2016, 08:50 AM
It uses the oem ecu so you don't have to get an emissions test.

Oh wow what the hell happened to the diff? I have a oem lsd if you're interested also a stock open diff.

Not sure exactly. I pulled the axles out and 3 pcs of the diff fell out. When I removed the diff it was broken inside the bearing as well.
I did notice that one of the bolt holes that holds the intermediate shaft to the engine block was stripped so maybe the shaft was moving around??? Has anyone else has this happen?

I have ordered an MFactory LSD diff but thanks for the offer.

Mfactory LSD diff and final drive arrived. New diff bearings came with it too.
Installing the bearings was as simple as heating them up with a heat gun till they started to smoke a little (this expands the bearing) then just dropped them onto the diff. No press required.
I also painted the subframe and its components. Looks pretty good I think.

So I'm 2 days into a 4 day weekend and finally making some progress. Subframe was painted a couple of weeks ago so I was able to get straight into it.

- Programmed the mini fuel sender to the Honda fuel gauge using the Spiyda fuel gauge wizard
- Replaced the timing belt, tensioner, cam seals and crankshaft seal
- Replaced the sump gasket (even painted the sump)
- I mounted the new Walbro fuel pump to the original mini fuel pump bracket
- I made up some 5mm steering rack limiters
- Fitted the rocker cover with new gaskets
- Put the engine into the subframe (For the last time. Fingers crossed)
- Alternator and belt fitted
Then lowered the car onto the engine. The new hoist made this part simple. Worth every penny.

Bit by bit it is still coming together......slowly.

After reviewing the feedback on some other mini forums I decided to modify the accelerator pedal to reduce that on/off switch feeling that people are talking about. I took an inch out of the top and added it to the bottom and raised the mounting point.
I extended the short shift Honda gear lever and installed it for the last time. Hopefully.
Radiator, wiring and a few other bits and pieces installed.

I also purchased a set of minivation bonnet hinges to make it easier to work on the car in the future without removing the bonnet.
It's off to get the exhaust done now.

Another update.

As my engine was so far forward I had to get the exhaust custom made from headers right through.
The headers were made in two pieces to allow for easy removal. I also had them wrapped to protect the front grille and paintwork from the heat.
It then flows to a collector with 02 sensor, Flexi joint, custom cat, resonator then to the straight through Playmini muffler. I'm looking forward to hearing it when it's up and running.

So I got creative with my dash. I enlarged the hole to fit the Honda cluster and made a surround out of acrylic to go over it. Of course it had to be carbon fibre wrapped to match the existing dash.
I also wrapped the cluster fascia and added some chrome rings around the dials.
What do you think?

I am not sure how it works but interested in how you work that out?
Visually the 4 piston looks like it would apply pressure to a wider area. No?

bennjamin
28-06-2016, 12:51 PM
It's to do with overall displacement (how much fluid is displaced) giving the actual clamping force - don't forget your master cylinder bore size as well into the equation

PS my mini came with drums on the front so anything is an improvement

Dutchy1978
28-06-2016, 02:46 PM
Mine has discs with a booster. The original master cylinder and booster is staying. Just the discs, pads and calipers are changing.

Hondarally
28-06-2016, 02:58 PM
The piston area is proportional to the diameter squared. The 2 piston setup has a total piston area of 4085mm2. The 4 piston setup has a total piston area of 3848mm2.

As you say, the 4 piston setup will apply load more evenly to the pad but this doesn't have a huge impact.

After taking the exhaust off to fix one of the studs, I learnt why I should have went for the ceramic coating. Bloody fibre glass wrap. Itchy fingers. Note to self.....never again.
So, ceramic coating done. Looks great but won't be really seen when the front grille goes on.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160710/e0cb83b954f3ad233c60e205a503dfe7.jpg

And with some playing around with the Autronic ECU it now runs.
I still have to sort out a few things like the noisy IAC valve you can hear before the engine starts and in fact over the top of the engine. Some ECU settings will fix that when I work it out.

https://vimeo.com/174102013

Now to get everything else sorted like bleeding the brakes & clutch and hoping for the best.
Also still need to tidy up the wiring and put the dash back in. Relocate the subwoofer and amp now that I have added a second fuel tank.
Set up the suspension and wheel alignment and the list goes on.

Greased up the suspension and ball joints.
The clutch pedal travels a bit too far so I had to add a block of rubber to the back of the pedal as a temporary measure till I can come up with a permanent solution.
A 70-63mm reducer elbow, some 2 1/2" alloy tubing and some 63mm flexible tubing made up the Air intake. It was a tight squeeze but I got it in. The K&N filter needs a clean and re-oil.

Yep. It is definitely cool to know you when you get to 5000 rpms that you still have 3000 rpms before changing gears.
Even better knowing it gains more power at this point.

Looks awesome. Have you taken it on any drives yet? How does it go?

Yep sure have. Drives well and heaps of fun. Feels like a mini but with a higher revving more powerful engine. Torque steer is also part of the fun.
