just picked myself up a 2000 EK Civic GLi, it's been sitting around for a few months 4-5 without any fresh fuel we think that might be the case but i'm hitting up the forums just incase.

When you start the car it revs up to 1500rpm 2000rpm and when the engine idles down to it's normal level it doesn't, it sits there and revs between 1000 and 2000rpm constantly. took it for a drive and the same thing. when we turn the aircon on however it stops and it settles on 1100rpm it's fine to drive but it's just weird. unplugging the O2 sensor does nothing but unpluging the MAF it almost stalls but steady's out and idles all right but a little rough. car did have an exhaust leak fixed and they had to remove the exhaust so maybe they didn't put the O2 back in properly but we just don't know. they did the work on the exhaust and it started doing this. also hearing it start i could hear a slight Missfire that goes away after a few seconds, it's only alittle miss starting up

Any ideas? i have a feeling this is going to be a fun introduction to Honda Ownership.

Thank you, after another 12 hours digging around google, forums and youtube i found a video on youtube of an Integra that has the exact same issue. post tomorrow if it fixes it or not.

clean the throttle body out with some carby cleaner and a tooth brush. Really get in there - rub it all out with a clean cloth
Also try and take off the ICAV and or FITV (if this model has one under the throttle body) take apart , clean with carby cleaner etc.
Both fill with crud if not used for some time.

I've used this one with very good results

got it home pulled the intake tube off and covered the lower port for the Thermal idle control valve and it purred beautifully. waiting for the engine to cool and and i'm going to pull it off and clean it out and she'll be good as gold. Ohh Cel "Check Engine Light" might of thought it was an acronym if it was CEL but no, no check engine light and i know it's the Thermal Idle Control Valve 100% now

You may have an air leak in one of it's gaskets. High idle is usually caused by uncontrolled air getting in after the throttle butterfly. Honda doesn't use butterfly adjustment to control idle speed.

i know like i said i'm going to pull it off check the seals make sure everything is how it should be worst case i get a second hand one. it looks like a diffirent design to a few i've seen so i'm kind of curious how to clean the one on the EK. i'm pretty sure it's a blocked coolant passage as the hose going to it was hot to touch while the other i could hold onto.

The coolant, or rather hot hoses are there for cold climates where there's a chance of the cold air passing through the unit and the intake, freezing it up. Not so much of a problem in Oz unless you're up in the snow or Tasmania (or maybe Melbourne on any given day)

i pulled the Valve off and i couldn't turn the little flap inside with my hand even with a rag on the end of the of the small spindal. 300,000klm of grime and deposits gunked it up till it couldn't move. cleaned it out and now it's moving freely. put it all back together and it's much better though the idle is more tempermental. still need fresh fuel but the revs go anywhere between 1000 and 1500 though now there isn't any rev bouncing and it's running alittle better. i noticed with the aircon on it drops the revs to a steady 1000-900rpm but the engine doesn't sound happy, it's alittle ruff and i can feel the motor doesn't want to be there. what's a normal idle rev for an EK1 1.6 non vtec?.

Look at the sticker on the underside of the bonnet
