View Full Version : Accord 9th Gen Trans filter location?

Hey guys,

I might be jumping the gun a bit but I have recently changed the transmission filter with a 10mm 3/8" Magnefine on my 06 Honda accord Euro Lux 216,000km last weekend and it got me thinking.

I also have a 13 Honda Accord VTi-L with 24,000km on it but the filter doesn't seem to be in the same location as the car above, does anyone have any idea where it is? where was it located in the 8th gen models? any ideas on sizes?

We got the normal auto here in AUS and I know Honda are now recommending DW-1 as their ATF fluid in all new cars and as a replacement for the Z1 fluid and it seems penrite have made a compatible fluid in the last few months

Penrite still recommends ATF FS/ MHP for all Hondas with normal transmissions

http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.php?id_categ=3&=&id_products=38

EDIT: looks like the V6 2013-2015 Accord now has Penrite LV (DW-1 equalvilant) recommended but the 4 cylinder and older model cars still have the normal FS ATF

and now has the ATF LV (DW-1 specs) but hasn't updated recommendations on the new Accords
http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.php?id_categ=3&=&id_products=709

On a slightly unrelated note, does anyone know what this is? http://s1.postimg.org/beycgc2m7/Untitled.png

Cheers,

Without a part diagram i cant help you sadly, info on the thai based 5at is rather scarce.

Yeah, i have tried everything to find it but can't....

did the last gen of the accords have an external inline filter? i vaguely remember it under the cover?

Going to get a dealer quote to service the trans last service of warranty but man, they do so much less now that it is capped price

Yes the 7th gen and I believe 8th gen had external I line filters

Edit 2

Give this a look, I know it's a CRV but in theory it should very carried over to the Thai accord drivetrain

If you have an atf warmer sitting on top of transmission, following the line, go Behind the engine and it might sit upwards instead of forwards previously

Dealerships try to spend as little as possible to maximize profits
Wow didn't know Penrite have ATF DW1 equivalent
They caught up quick - though im unsure whether to use it in a new Honda

Also good luck getting any info on the ATF filter
Honda won't give out the part number

is that possibly what i have in the picture circled in the OP? EDIT: the warmer that is

Knowing Honda, it will still be a 10mm part ( will be confirming when I can find the bloody location and snap a pic of it) and I will just chuck a magnefine in it once warranty is up

Penrite still recommend their multi-vehcles normal Z1 replacements for all hondas and havent updated to recommended DW-1 yet but the fluid is still very new (released August 2014)... I will stick to their fully Synthetic Z1 replacement for my Euro and ask about the DW-1 replacement when my accord is out of warranty- unless they change the recommendation by then =)

Nope, that thing circle in op is a electrical box of some sort nfi what it actually do but wires go in there

See attachment

Red Square = transmission heater square thing that looks like a computer cpu heatsink
Green circle = where I suspect the filter is at, it's behind the engine. .. good luck reaching it...

Anyway just an update (this would have been upload Thursday but I stupidly deleted the pics before checking they had successfully been bluetoothed to my comp)- these pics are nowhere near as good just to add salt to the wound lol

Went to look for the warmer and a vertial filter instead of the horizontally placed one I was looking for orginally and found this:

Looks like the warmer in the 9th gen accord only has 3 tubes coming out of it (unless there is one below)

Bottom tube goes to the engine block where there is the main coolant tube
Tube on the top left (mostly covered) was the one I followed to the circled object which is most probably the trans filter... it also looks 10mm whereas the other tubes are bigger
Top right tube curved behind the electrical boxes so i couldnt see where it went

Thoughts? looks like it isn't behind the engine after all (thank god) but will still need the air box removed minimum

Looks like it man
Try and get an inspection camera down there
Or see if you can remove the intake arm

No inspection camera at my place and too risky floating my phone down there with a timer so i might leave it until the car is out of warranty and I do a transmission pan drop... I have a stock of 4 spare magnefines so no big deal....

I will put my hand down there sometime soon when the engine is still cold and confirm it feels like the filter but I am pretty sure it is...

Dont have the effort to take it apart at the moment =P

I wish, it is actually really tight in there..... I need the flexibility of an inspection camera.... but I will be very sure once i lean in and touch it.... it's going to have that bump on 1 end indicating that it flows that way http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7159/6623267661_0f807634cd_b.jpg

Transmission pan drop?
You crazy man
Honda Auto's don't have a pan, its a drain plug and you fill through the dipstick hole
Non of that miss like JATCO/Aisin transmissions hehe

Fredoops

Well there is an internal filter that would only be accessible by dropping the pan

I wouuld of said by literally cracking open the transmission like a walnut hehe

yeah my bad, just the plug, wasn't thinking when i wrote that... I just do it yearly on my Euro now

Will see how much it would cost to have it done by the dealer but if they aren't worth it, I will do it myself once warranty is up

Honestly man
Drain and fill every 30,000kms and you'll be sweet
I'm about to hit 30,000kms on my ge6 and i'm going to do a drain & fill and change the filter with an OEM one

I wont be changing the filter yearly (especially if I know the car's transmission service history) but you need to remember that I am not doing a full flush as you should be when honda do it- in my eyes it just looks like too much of a waste of ATF doing 3 drain and fills to change the whole (at least most of) trans fluid

Dropping the stump only gets 2.5L out of the 6L transmission capacity. Anyway, you won't believe how different the trans shifts after a change and how dark it goes in just a year

Happy Easter?

looks like the orginal item i thought was the filter isn't..... It is much further up closer to the air box than you'd think... which is actually a good thing- easier reach

The blue circle is where i put my phone down... it was fairly high up- found the filter (flow goes downwards- dust)

That's it, so it is the same setup as a late model crv, that's good to know.

Yeah, glad it still has the inline.... do you know if the normal accords suffer from the same issue as the Euros with the Hondamatics?? heat,= extra wear, etc etc?
I know it uses a differenty designed box due to how it shifts and reacts despite also being 5-speed. (aso much more efficient despite being a heavier car with the same sized engine

...still the same hehe
