I have a 97 vtir and i'm going to do an exhaust but i'm confused about what to do.
I want to do headers and exhaust but I don't want it too much louder than it is now. Ihave been told to do just headers, hi-flow cat and leave the rest stock.
does anyone know how effective this would be for power gain/ would doing the rest of the system make that much of a difference?

doing the whole system would definately give you more gains.. but then it depends on what exhaust you are getting.. [?]

cat back alone will not get you good gains, just noise

header and cat with stock exhaust is more effective then just a cat back. i think ppl were suggesting you start with cat and headers

Cat back system will only produce noise - not more power. (we need a dyno print out to prove otherwise!).
Being the cheaper option and also portrays a mental image ( more noise = more "speed feel") you are probably best getting a hi-flow cat and cat-back piping.

Add another $500-$1500 for a header...remember this is where you will free up the most flow + horsepower ! ( and a decent header is a pre-requisite *spl?* for more mods later on.)

I'm about to get a Toda Header (Thankx Adrian), JDM Cat & Vision 'B' Pipe ( thur Leonardy - JDM Concepts). Should be quite a weight difference.
Now I have to figure out which Axle back to get...Ideas? Twin loop mugen would be nice & not be too loud at the sametime.

Just getting one part (ie headers) and leaving it as is might only create noise and bottlenecks.

Mugen Twin loop cat back will do the job...
I would personally leave the headers stock useless your willing to spend thousands

With a zorst system right....if i was to get a new header would that still without the cat would that sitll fit my stock pipe??...coz i always thought the piping had to be the same size all the way so in order for me to change any part of my zorst i would have to change the whole thing....if im wrong could i just buy a header and upgrade my cat and zorst later??

u may wish to start looking at known quiet/silent mufflers such as the twin loop. most noise and drone will come from ur muffler, also resonators.
more muffling and more resonators may also equal more restrictions

yeh u can do that. im just afraid that if i do the zorst itl sound like crap. i cant stand that tinee sound. :honda:

I've been told that a stock type r system is one of the best to put on a vti-r.
n e one able to shed some light on this theory?

i had about four dyno sheets that showed gains from 3000-8000rpm from changing my cat back and various bits. in changing from a 2" press bent stock system to a 2.5" mandrel bent system you can expect to feel a substantial difference. if my memory serves me correctly, i first dyno'd with 82kw at c&v, then pulled 89 with a "hurricane" header -which is supposedly no better than stock- and a 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust. i went back there again with a 2.5" cat back a month later and pulled 92kw. there was a very slight dip in power in the bottom end from changing to the 2.5".
