Hi guys,

been reading vigorously and doing my research as I am looking to buy a Honda civic as a fun get around.
Seems to be a fairly good community around here, happy to join the Honda crowd :)

Hey Oli,
It definitely can be a fun daily/get around car all the way to a track monster. (you decide :p)

I recommend finding an EK with at least a B16a in it, B18c would be even better!

If you need any help, the community here is pretty helpful

As limiteR said, I would also recommend looking for a B series Civic (EK or EM come factory with the B16A2).

The EK with a factory B series is an EK4. The Coupe version is the EM1.

Both are getting a little harder to get in amazing condition but there's still some nice ones out there if you look.

What sort of Civic's are you currently looking into?

Hi Squalled + limiteR,

Thanks for the warm welcome and advices. I am still figuring out which motors belong in which models and some differences.... seems to be a lot of reading before I can tell the differences (is there a big thread that explains it? Wikipedia covers all countries which I don't really care about haha). But I have been looking at Civics because I've always liked how they look particular the EM and the EK. Been looking at the D and B series motor in the civic. Seems to be a bit difficult to find these days :P. I am no mechanic so my knowledge is limited, but I am definitely keen to learn.

Once again thanks for helping me out.

Hi Oli, one question I have for you.

What will happen to your account once you have a Honda? Will your username go from "idontownahonda" to "iownahonda"?

If you prefer, shoot me a pm and I'll change it for you once you have decided what vehicle you are buying.

Regards, Sean.

Hey RenzokukenJ,

Thanks for the offer, I'll be sure to contact you first should my status of Honda ownership change :).
On a side note are there any Honda bibles I should read?

EK1 (CXi and GLi models) - D16Y4 Single Over Head Cam Non VTEC engine

EJ8 (Earlier model coupe) - D16Y8 Single Over Head Cam VTEC engine

EK4 (VTi-R) - B16A2 Double Over Head Cam VTEC engine

EM1 (VTi-R) - B16A2 Double Over Head Cam VTEC engine

Generally the single over head cam (SOHC) engines aren't as performance orientated as the double over head cam (DOHC) engines. In saying that, they're really good engines for turbo builds.

Buy something from the 90's with a b series engine and manual transmission. Really fun to drive and easy to learn to work on. Heaps of parts and support out there. What's your budget??

Wow, for 10k you can pretty have your pick. I'd buy something for 5k and spend the rest on tools and parts :)

The goal is to acquire the tools and some of the parts and do all the necessary post purchase servicing + rego + insurance for under 10k :)!

You will get all that no worries. Be picky, do heaps of reading. Have fun with the process :)

All good mate!

As PJT mentioned, read, read, read. Best thing you can do to get the knowledge you need.

$10k is a fairly nice budget. You'd be able to get something really nice with that price range.

People are always here to help if you need it man!

If you have the time and skills then you could buy an EG for around $1500 and use the rest of the cash to put in a B16A2 or B18C7. My personal preference would be the B16A2 because I love the EG6 and it is a shame that they were never sold in Australia. They also only weigh in at around 900 or so KG (give or take) so power to weight would benefit.

You can go even cheaper if you don't care about paint. I got my eg for $700 and spent about $2000 on the b18 conversion. But many other "hidden" costs after that.

id say if you got 10k to spend, you paint should be one of the things to be picky about lol

$10k to spend.

Exterior and interior should be in great condition!

Depends if you want to buy a standard Civic to work on or one that has had work completed (engine swap, suspension, exhaust etc).

what's the real difference between sticking with N/A - intake + headers
and slapping a turbo onto your car in terms of kW?

PJT
25-06-2015, 09:06 PM
A very big difference. But it's a much much more complex and expensive process putting a turbo on.

Once you get used to boost. You have to try really hard to feel vtec pull.

PJT

Boost is expensive.... ;)

Its all about what you want, how much you want and how much you want to sacrifice to get it.

Boost = If you want to stay small engine, produce numbers, like that BOV/Wastegate noise and if you view $$$ : kW/Nm with importance, then Boost is the way to go. Its a different experience to NA, its not for everyone.

Small NA = If you like to rev the hell out of the engine, don't mind losing low - mid range for that screaming top engine, enjoy the throttle response and THAT sound a screaming NA gives then stay with Small NA. Sometimes for a Honda, sacrifice the big goals, just free up the car's performance from factory w/ bolt-ons [I/H/E] + some other parts then be happy with it, save up for that next car.

Engine Swap = If you want to stay NA and don't mind the expense, then swap an engine [Pick your poison].

Whats the cost total cost of the full sick Honda?

I have been in kswap dc2 and eg. Yeh nah mate.

Im not being smart ass. I love my Honda's i do, but Im just being honest. Stock from factory boost has it.

Different cars for different people.

Boost boring as for me...

The novelty of BOV and Wastegate coupled with usually average sounding engines just doesn't do it for me.

I like cars that go around corners fast. Don't care if there's a steam engine under the bonnet :P
