Just got myself an ek4, looks like the keys gone through a lot. Anyhow the grip for the key has fallen apart so i'm left with the nude key and the immobiliser sensor(i think?).
Are replacement grips available for purchase? Or does anyone know of a better alternative?

If the rubber has fallen off your key and you see 2 black dots left in the metal then I am guessing they are not chips but left over rubber from the grip. New rubbers cannot be bought cause they are formed on the key but a new blank can be purchased from honda and can be recut at any locksmith.

Its not actually black dots, seems to go through the key, white/silver in colour.
only remedy at the moment is a hot glue gun =\

yup for civics prior to the EK series you can get a replacement key from honda for 19.95. It is so cheap because they key has no programmable chip inside. It will cost you 6 dollars to cut it at mister minit.
Ek series onwards the price of the key increases quite substantially, because the key needs to be programmed and contains a programmable chip.
Hey nick which honda one u went to?

around $150 at your local honda dealer for key, cut and programming and this is provided you have the red key...

A bit more @ $190.
$84.75 = One spare key
$99 to re-program
$5-7 = Key cut.
Some of you guys need to stop going to Honda for parts.
To get a key cut, and programmed to yuor immobiliser, it would only cost about $60 - $70 from a decent locksmith.
Man how the **** can Honda charge $99 to program the key? When I enquired about getting a key cut (I have no red key) they asked for $1000+ so they could fit a new immobiliser in! OBviously, I got a key cut at the local locksmith alot cheaper.

Well after a trip down to Dick Smith and $5, I now have something to grip on, on my key.
I bought some 22mm(I think? The chick got it wrong on the receipt) heat shrink tube and did a few layers to add thickness. its not bad but now i have about 1m of spare heat shrink tube.
Holds on reasonably well, also keeps the chip in place. Can post a picture for those that are interested.
Let me know.
nb: My key is from a Civic 1996 VTi-R Hatch by the way, previous owner looks like he's chewed on the rubber and its fallen to bits.

Original grip(What's left of it anyway..):

New grip from a little distance:

I mean its not the greatest fix in the world and doesn't look exactly real, but it beats having the immobiliser chip falling out and holding on to a sticky key(crap that stuck the old grip on).
