Hey Peoples,

This is my first post! W00t! Anywho...
Dad's Volvo finally died on Chrissy day. We've been looking around for small cars (not too small), and we've narrowed it down to a Honda Civic.

We owned a Honda Legend a few years back, but we had to sell it cause the engine basically needs everything replaced at 140 000 kms.

I'm wondering how long the 1994 (or thereabouts)1.5L and 1.6L engines can go for (usually) before dying.

Thanks heaps.
Peace,
Ben

with good regular care (service, routine check ups) they prove to be quite a long lasting engine...

140,000kms in a legend? That's wierd - they're V6's and a Honda for starters - any engine dying at that age sounds dodgy. Either it wasn't looked after or whoever sold it to you was an arsehole, or maybe ur mechanic is a bit dodge as well, hmmm.... :x

That's not entirely true...
No date was affixed to the Legend spoken of...
Let's be honest here guys... Most pre 1990's Honda's are generally complete piles of crap...
Sure, you can get the Civics’, CRX’s, Integra’s & Preludes going...
But usually that involves a transplant of some sort...
Seriously... How many of you are going to stand up and say that a V6 Turbo Legend was in any way a good car?
Thank god there are very few of them in this country...
If their thermo fan in the hood shags itself... the whole loom is toasted...
Hmmm, yeah cool car... Not...
Don't get me wrong; I love my Honda's...
Just not all of 'em...

Re engine life…
Usually 240K they begin to deteriorate…
300K+ is not out of the question with good maintenance…
Poor maintenance will see death early…
So too will track use without appropriate thermal management

who sed the legend was a turbo??? and yes i see ur point which i forgot to include in my last post - we don't know what year it was. I, however, test drove like a 1985 Honda Accord sedan to buy for my first car and it had done over 350,000km and was fine - i even had it chekced by RACV and it was with a 1 year warranty and was FINE. I know it wasn;t a V6 but 300K kms is pretty darn good for a m id-80's 4 cylinder. The earlier Honda's are no where near as good as the ones now, but i think u may be generalising...

My '90 B16A powered SiR has over 237,000 kms on it and my GF's '87 Accord has over 240,000... both are still going strong.

I'm guessing the SiR should make it to 250,000 :)

LOL.... fair comment...
I agree, You are right, to a point, about me generalising...
But I think we can all agree,
Honda came a long way with their road cars between 1988 & 1992...

I know of an EK civic VTiR that has 200,000Kms on it. driven every day, and driven fast, and so far, it is mechanically beautiful, has barely missed a beat, let alone had its clutch changed...

As for build quality Toda AU, i think every car, espcially japanese cars, upped the build quality between 1988-1992... However, though my lifetime of hondas, all 19 of them, I have never met an unreliable road car once the issues at hand were addressed, and treatedwith proper care (talked to nicely, driven hard, hondas love that). Honda have always been way ahead of the pack when it comes to reliablilty.

C’Mon... 200K & still the stock clutch... :D
Are you Miss Daisy???
Sorry couldn't resist... :P

Honda's are reliable if they receive the proper care as you've said...
But we all know they're not invincible...
Heck... Just look at half the silly niggling problems that turn up on forums...
I'm not disputing the built quality of the Honda's either...
I just think engine wise... Anything less than a B16A is a waste of money perusing performance wise...
I know guys love their D-series engines etc...
Heck, I had my own love affair with the lil old ZC engine some years ago...
But from that, I know they blow up... Not instantly, or easily… But they do...
On the face of it… Compared the B-series they're a fragile little thing...
Even though with the right work done... They're a hell of a lot of fun...
Anyhow… I’ll back out of this one…
I don’t want to upset anyone…
Peace… :)

hmmm u make some valid points there TODA AU. I have a D series engine and there ain't no way I'm gonna pursue moding it up really - I'm realistic, I'll wait till i get my Tegg. And I do think you're correct in saying that Honda came a long way in the late eighties - early nineties. :D

ok.. i service my car every 5000 kms... how much is revvin the crap out of ur engine too much???

i've always thought that they are made to do so, as long as u service raaara, but when is it too much???

apologies, it was an 89 Legend Coupe. We were told to get rid of the car before 140 000 by 3 different mechanics, and by 2 other car people. At 138k we were told it'd need some major work, so we decided to ditch it.
Absolutely maginificent car though. Best car my mother has owned, and she now drives an X-Trail Ti.

I drive an E34 535iM, and the Legend wasnt far off it in quality and luxury.

thanks for all the help with the engine. dad doesnt really take care of his cars, so i guess the civic is as good as any!

luzinit: it adds to the wear... but mine sees 8000rpm frequently and I service at the same intervals you do :)

My EG has just had 170,000km click over and it stil runs smooth and doesn't miss a beat. And of course it receives its fair share of revving :)
