How to check malfunction indicator codes?

The malfunction light is on in my ek and just wanting to know how to safely check the code. I know there are 2 plugs under the passenger side dash (not sure what to plug into into it). Then you count the number of flashes (there are long and short flashes which I don't know what they mean). If anyone has more info it would be very helpful. Thanks
