Did you use 7/11 petrol?
Poor petrol will make your car ping

Are you reffering to a noise like coins in a coffee can? I've been hearing it in my car lately and I run BP ultimate and it happens ~2500-3000RPM and under load.
I think a batch of shit fuel must be going aorund because my car has been tuned to perfection :P anyone??!!

yeah mine one happens at low rpm only. ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING UP HILL WITH 4th GEAR ! it pings like hell. i tried to back off a little timing and it stopped. and wonder if pinging will kill the engine? and y is there pinging? anyone can give me some idea ? thx !

fuel would be my first guess!! what you running at the moment?
Under low RPM pinging is bad enough to begin chipping at the top of your pistons :S you did the right thing by retarding the timing. IMO take it to your mechanic and get a compression test and a leakdown test to see if your block is healthy HTH!

i get that pinging noise when i turn off my car all the time, is that bad? i just thought it was the exhaust pipes? i always get good fuel though?

i remember reading about this somewhere and apparently it's the metals cooling down after being expanded from the heat..

try retarding your dizzy timing alittle first to reduce detonation....other tunign aspects contrute to both "pinging " and "pinking" ( two seperate terms, and audibe + physically noticeable)
Get a mechanic to chuck on a timing light and see if the timing is ok !

how my mechanic tuned my car was to advance the timing by moving the distrubor. as a base to tune it with power fc. last time i send it back to honda and honda adjusted my timing to normal.. and the car runs like a turtle.

i don know exactly what sound ur hearing but it sounds like engine knocking, and yess thats bad and why are u going uphill on 4rth gear? ur engine is tyring too hard and its knocking when u hear those noises (coin in a tin can etc)

I sometimes have the same problem but its not very loud at all
i was told that it was something to do with the exhaust

pfft, if it was tuned to "perfection" it would not be pinging (or "detonating")
you're tune sounds "perfectly ****ed" to me.
Set base timing back to 15deg, and get someone who KNOWS what they're doing to tune it. Tune it with the fuel you regularly use. And install new NGK plugs.
The only time detonation is good is when you enjoy seeing your engine crack a cylinder !
Address the problem right away!

The reason you are pinging has nothing to do with compressin tests, leak tests etc.
Fact is, the fuel is either pre-igniting, or the timing is off.
I dont know what setup you have, but get it sorted by a mechanic that KNOWS what they're doing.
I suggest: Base Timing at 15deg. New Spark Plugs, Set cam gears back to 0,0(stock)
Here's a tip: Advancing timing is not always the best solution. The association of more timing = more power is absolutely bullshit.
I've made more power on cars in the lower rpm's by retarding ignition timing.
The moral is dont tune ignition unless
a) you are on a dyno
b) you have a knock sensor installed
c) you know what the heck you're doing.
In most cases, Honda got the timing right from the factory. Its a conservative tune, so you might get "some" extra power top end by advancing timing a few degrees, but it will be at the expense of lower torque.
When knocking becomes audible to the ears..... its VERY SERIOUS, and just becuase you cant hear it, doesnt mean you arent knocking either!

yes the exhusts does heat considerable while driving ,and yes it is just simply metal cooling after heating up and xpanding. once the car is turnt off. as for reasons driving dont sound to promising , get it looked at and save them hondas .........

Mmm i see - just a question - my car exhibits no usual audible "pinging" ( IE the rattling up hills etc) ...seemingly runs fine. BUT , it does have a "wobble" noise coming from inside the engine somewhere under mid to heavy acceleration or under load....hard to describe!
BTW , this "noise" does seem to be "holding" the car back...
sorry for the hijack people but my question is that plus what are the defining /different factors bewtween pinking and pinging ? (apart from npise)

"pinking" = no good for engine
Hope you can solve the problem soon!!
if all comes to worse,
its gonna be your leaky valve seals or worn piston rings.
get it checked out before it does bad damage.
using premium unleaded fuel can heap lessen the pinging but in handfuls of cases it can only do so much.

No, thats complete rubbish.
get your timing issues resolved and dont listen to internet mechanics.

what you have said is correct, no doubt.
timings is one way to look at it.
however leaky valve seals also promote pinging.
i could be wrong.
but if you want to be so bigheaded about it, then so be it.
what a nice forum.

as i have mentioned i tried to back off 2 degree timing from those pingings rpm.. it stopped pinging and knocking straight away. it was too much timing.
There is nth to do with turn off the car tho.. the pinging i am saying is from the "Engine"
But does anyone know where the hell is pinging sound from? from piston? from tappets? from valve ? from spark plugs? explosion sound? this is my question. Thanks

pinging sound is what? something hitting inside the engine? only happens when "ACCERATE"

whilst you ARE correct in stating what you have stated regarding oil reducing the octane of the air/fuel mix.
i dont think you could be correct in this PARTICULAR SITUATION...
a 1998 or so Honda with leaky valve stems? hmmm, possible, but extremely unlikely...
ATSEK4 - does you car blow smoke or use a lot of oil???
also - did you not read the parts about:
i tried to back off a little timing and it stopped.
how my mechanic tuned my car was to advance the timing by moving the distrubor.
no offence, but in the context of the above factors, what you said was complete rubbish...

pre-ignition is the air/fuel exploding too early.
the pinging sound is the explosions rocking the insides of your engine.
yes - it is like little bombs going off inside each of your cylinders - smashing into the top of the piston - jarring the conrods - hammering them onto the bearing - trying to push the crankshaft the opposite direction of the way it is meant to go.
not nice eh?
