turbo the sohca!
best power to money ratio :P

b16a engine conversion would cost roughly the same (5k.. giv or take)... including labour...(civic vtir)
b16b (type r)
b18c2.. ur lookin at a bit more...(teg vtir)
then theres the c7... (type R)
h22a is another option...(prelude..euro r)

if u wanna go all out all motor.... theres the frankie conversion or k20a (type R..euro r)... here ur lookin at 10k+ easy

but do a search dude... been covered HEAPS

for a b16a into a civic coupe it would cost no where NEAR 5K. his vti coupe is already wire for vtec. + its EFI not tha carby shit. so if he was to pick up my engine/gearbox/ecu/loom(no need for service cuz its been done) for 1750$ + secondhand engine mounts + install himself, because its all drop in/plug and play it would cost roughly 2000$ to 2500$MAX. if his was do get it install professionally...they charge him from something like 500$ to 1500$.
that still wouldnt add up to 5k

If you decided to keep your SOHC, then here is a list of mods that will give you some decent power out of the D16y8.

Intake ~ $100
Cotton Pod Filter ~ $100

Header ~ $400 - $600
Catback Exhaust ~ $200 - $300
Muffler ~ $150

Camshaft ~ $250 US Dollars
Ti Springs/ Retainers ~ $350 US Dollars
Port/Polish ~ Couple of hundred

Oh and if you plan on upgrading your engine to a B16a2 then you have to make sure you get one from 1997 or newer or it wont be legal on your car.

While your deciding on what to do, you could do mods to your D16y8 which can remain on your car if/when a B16a2 goes in. This includes CatBack exhaust and muffler.
