I bought an import civic off a mate a few months ago and I've been asked if it's an ef9 a few times to which I reply I don't know. What I know is it was imported from japan as a 90 model which apparently it's australian equivalant is a 91 model, it's got a b16a in it (which from reading the papers i got with it is from a written off 93 del sol), it's got rear wheel discs, electric sunroof, electric mirrors, electric retractable mirrors and climate control. Help on this matter would be appreciated. P.S. Don't ask about the VIN I don't think it's the original number.

look at ur firewall right under the middle section of the windscreen. you should see your VIN. your VIN will tell whether or not ur car is an EF9

hmmm... from recollection, i had a firend who prev. had an ef9. and i am 90% sure that ef9 civics do not have sunroof. although someone could have added a sunroof at some point of the car's life, but yeah... pretty sure ef9's did not have sunroofs. :)

My EF9 does, as do the EF9s of a few friends in NZ. It was an optional spec, as was SiR/SiR II/race trim.
If the motor is from a del sol it could be questionable - but the climate control is NOT a straight swap into an ED6 so you could have a JDM spec car at least (CC was optional on all JDM 4Gs).

the VIN number is definately the original
it cant be changed.. if it has the car is stolen
the first few letters and numbers of the vin No would be EF9 then heaps of gibberish

on the engine number does it say B16a or B16a2

well, the title must have the vin in it. If not, the vin has to be on the chassis. The Chassis code ist something with EF9 then thats what you've got. If you don't know, post pics of any metal plate found on your chassis in this thread. plenty of folks should be able to help you out.
If the engine is from a del sol, it is an A2. Only the A1 is found in the previous generation.

yes the vin can be changed.
if you have EG breeze and u importanted a EG6 and u can't get it registered. u can cut 'n' paste the breeze vin onto the EG6.

VIN change = angle grinder + mig.
I hope it isn't for your sake.

I looked at that spot where the VIN is meant to be and nothing was there but just off to the left about 8 inches are a bunch of letters and numbers stamped in to the firewall (not on a plate) with the first three characters being EF9. Well there you go. The engine swap was done in japan so it must be a JDM motor, and the exhaust has 2 oxy sensors therefore apparently making it a b16a1. Also some interesting facts on the ef9 wouldn't go astray, I don't know heaps about honda's, but from what I understand the ef9's pretty good. Thanks everyone.

if you've got climate control, rear disc and japanese fuse diagram you should be fine. not many ppl willl go to that lengths for a gen 4 civic to look so jdm.
the original engine could of died and had to be replaced.
jdm ef9 : cable clutch gearbox
delsol : hydro clutch gearbox

in japan the b16a2 is only labeled a b16a the jap spec engines dont have the number at the end

another way to tell determine which b16 it is, the rocker cover says VTEC then on the bottom says either-
honda motor co. (b16a1)
honda (b16a2)

The motor also has 2 air flow sensor tubes going into the intake pipe (one to rocker cover, one to throttle body) whereas apparently the aus spec is only meant to have one. And I believe the tranny has a cable clutch. Once again a request on interesting facts on the ef9.

the motor has nothing to do with it beenin a real EF9 as he posted that the engine has been replaced

I know. But people keep going on about the differences between aus spec and jdm motors and the differences between a1's and a2's, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents

Yes garret, but that should not be a problem ... the label of the engine is irrelevant as it will still be an A2 and not an A1. Oh of course unless he is not able to tell the difference without the label ;-)
