My friend is getting a B16A VTEC in his EG civic,
The engine before fitting has already been reconditioned (both bottom and top end). So what is the best way of running it in?

From the day he picks it up he has to drive 300km on the highway. I am assuming only use about 3000rpm for that or so?

Can it be floored but keep revs low?

Anyway, this is how I recommend him doing it, please tell me opinions:
3000rpm or less first 1000km
3500rpm or less for 1000-1500 km
4000rpm or less for 1500-2000km
5000rpm or less for 2000-2500km
6000rpm or less for 2500-3000km
7500rpm or less for 3000-3500 km
At this stage do an oil change
And after that he can take it to redline.

I realise this may be extremely cautious but for the engine it seems pretty good?

I wouldn't do any WOT acceleration until the 3500km mark. Even when revving the car out to 7500rpm I wouldn't be doing it.

You will need to vary the load on the engine, but no WOT.

i'd say keep it under 4K for the first 2-3,000kms. change oils, then take is over.....

when i ran my motor in (4agte) i tried to stay off the hwy as much as possible and use all the gears on each drive. i also tried to do short drives to make the pistons heat up and cool down as much as possible. i drove for over 2000km just to make sure everything was worn in.
too bad i live close to intersecting hwys and the drives are always long. and my car stil hasnt been tuned/dynoed :wtc:

oh yeah, i changed my oil after the first 500km (yes!) and re-torqued the head.
also, i tried to get the rev's over 4k rpm to 'stretch' out the engine after 1000km but my boost cut was stopping me from going over.

If they used OEM parts for this rebuild just drive it as you normally would there is no need to baby a new engine at all just do not hold the revs at 7000rpm + and do not use the gearbox to slow the car down use the brakes.
And do not hold consistent throttle positions just just get it to accelerate and back off a little bit then accerate again, all you are doing is glasing the bores if you do not drive it with load on it and this is all done in the first 100klms of its life and make sure you do not idle it for long periods as there is then no load on the rings and that is also NOT GOOD FOR THE BORES.
Hope this helps

I rebuilt my motor on the GENONE a few years ago, and to be honest my car Never wanted to go harder than what it could when I was running it in - it just wouldn't go even if I wanted to.

New rings, new bearings - recond head - there just simply was NO compression for the engine to rev past 3000rpm or go faster than 40km/h.
The way I ran the motor in was to let itself run in - how it wants it. I drove it to the Freeway (oh haha - i can hear you go - What???) - YES - the freeway at 10pm at night - no traffic - you can take it as easy or as hard as you want.
Once on the freeway (freeway in perth is about 100kms North to South) - i let the motor off easy... couldn't go past 60km/h - did about 50kms like that - then it went to 70km/h - as the compression raised. Slowly slowly it was creeping up in RPM and KM/h.
(being an Auto also helps cos you don't over-rev so easlily).

I must have gone up and down the freeway 3 or 4 times over a space of about a week - at night - cold air - Nice and the motor got both LOW and HIGH RPM and temperatures.

If you decide to do it this way - up to you - if you decide to do it another way - up to you!
What ever YOU do... DON'T FLOG the car in any case!!!! Not for the 1st 5000km/h. i have known a person who got a rebuilt motor and the very first run out of the workshop put his foot down, and the engine was never thesame!

OH BTW: to those who think Honda engines aren't run in when you buy a brand new car... to your surprise you will find that those motors are RUN in outside the car for about 1-2000kms before you get your car with 10 or what ever kms on the odometer. Hence why they only advise you take it easy for 3000kms cos its been run prior.
*well thats what i've heard and read from a couple sources*
