My Prelude (vtir model) has just reached 100k and I need to get the service done. I have been quoted $1,300 by Honda. (Timing Belt $400 and Service $900).

I think this is a bit excessive but is this the norm for the prelude or is there any where else in Melbourne that is reasonably priced.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Andrew

its the 100k service mate.. one of the more important ones.. probably a case where quality would be a higher priority than money

$900 is a bit much for a major service. $400 is resonable for the timming belts for a dealership

ur manual will simply state wot needs to be checked and replaced if necessary..

yes Im aware that the manual says what stuf is to be done. It dosnt how ever tell u what is done to these components so my @nd question still remains unanswerd.
U see most of the stuff there I can do expt tappets and shit of the like, so thats why I want to know what bolts to tighten, steering air con, blah blah blah........

Thanks fo the help. I am in Melbourne (South East) and from looking in the hand book at what needs to be done, it is probably expensive beacuse it is at the honda dealership, but then again, there is alot of labour as well.

With the timing belt, i think it is important to get that done at Honda, but I am sure a mechanic can do the rest of the service and tighten the bolts etc.

I will speak to another mechanic and see what he thinks is the cost for the service.

Cheers,

Andrew

Well I got the service done and it cost $900 all up. In the end i think that some dealerships were actually counting the cost of the timing belt twice. They were including it in the cost of the service and then adding it on again. Therefore $900 for the service and an additional $500 the timing belt (which the cost was laready included within the origional service cost of $900.

Strange, but after getting the service done, the car is runing very nice. Almost band new. Thanks for all of the advice provided.

Well if you ever done a timing change on a H22A its the parts that costs a lot and the labour to change it is a lil bit more involved then a B series... taking into account you also must get the Balance Shaft to line up with the markings as well otherwise you will have idle problems/funny noises

Timing Belt / Balance Shaft Belt $70/$40

Auto Tensioner $300 (ouch) (sometimes not necessary to change but ive seen some that have crap themselves after 60,000kms)

(these are notorious for loosing hydralic pressure causing inadequate belt tension, timing belt jumps teeth if your lucky your motor will die and you pull over safely... otherwise consider a few bent valves)

Convert to the manual tensioner setup similar to the P14 H23A and you have piece of mind I know I did parts total roughly $180~ previously had to wait 2 weeks for Honda Japan

Water Pump $250-300

Cost of Fluid(s) $100-$200

Labour ($varies)

$1300 is quite reasonable if the parts are included....

changing the balance belt, is no real biggie its pretty easy to line up. and I wouldnt be changing the water pump unless its showing signs of failure. but yes the tentioner is peice of mind to change and defanantly a good idea.

I was quoted by $960 on the gold coast by Honda. However I have my own mechanic who has done all my services on both of my cars and he has done an awesome job every time. So I paid half that price.
