hi there..
does anyone ever weighted how heavy are their wheels in total? (ie wheels + tyres)
i've just weighted my stock steelies today. 4x100 175/65/R14 they weigh around 11-12kgs.
just wondering wat aftermarket wheels are lighter than them (wheels + tyres)? if not ..then wats really the point of changing aftermarket wheels. a bit confuse :o
we always see when buying or somone selling wheels.. it says light weight ( only around 3-5 kg or so on) but then after u put on som tyres ..say 195/50/R15 on it..it'll weight up to ~13-14kgs in total wont they?
post up som comments guys
apologise for my ignorance on these.

not only do steelies look plain but they are also very narrow, once you start getting some power in a front wheel drive car this becomes quite a problem. usually when you get aftermarket wheels they're a fair bit wider so this is a good reason to get them in my opinion. another reason is handling, stock wheels versus some aftermarket wheels with decent tread the difference will be quite noticable.

icic..
disregarding the looks here. just like to know more on other stuff. :)
true tat stock wheels are narrow..but won narrow provide less grip hence may hav a better launch? perhaps if its for winding roads may not b as good cause less traction..i agree.
more opinion pls :) any comments on weight wise?

wat?????????????????????????????????
if u tyres dun even grip... u ll just keep gettin wheel spin

no narrow wont provide a better launch, if anything narrow wheels will make for a harder launch especially if you have alot of power. narrow wheels would be good at higher speed as there would be less friction:thumbsup:

Most of the weight comes from the compressed air within the tire as well remember.
You said your stock 14" steelies weigh around 11-12Kgs? I have some lightweight wheels (15" 205/50/15) and they weigh around 13Kgs or a bit less I think (will have to double check). So with all 4 wheels...........
WHen I went from stockies to my lightweight rims, I actually noticed a 'slight' increase in torque down low. But no change in the mid/high range.

EDIT: WTF did I get 8Kgs from!

My 17' chromies weigh 10kgs alone + another 8 with the rubber = 18kgs
but as wyn sed, no change in the mid/high range compared to stockies

someone try weighing in a set of rims - ANY set of rims first flat ( no compressed air inside) then again , fully inflated. I cannot say the exact increase of mass due to tryre dimensions etc...but it does add a significant amount. Obviosuly, larger profile tyres will hold more compressed air than lower profiles of the same with/diameter etc.

You have to measure the whole wheel with the tire+air.......otherwise it's no point!

Just weighed mine again.. My 17's + tire + 44psi air = 18.4kgs.. There's not much difference really :)...

wow...15in light weight gets up to only 8kgs or less? thats pretty good! cause i rememebr seeing from somwhere..a 15in light weight ~4kg wheels after tyres will get up to ~12kg.. i might b wrong. but again..pls double check if u can :) really like to how light a 15in can go :D

I just checked the weight and it's actually 13Kgs. Not sure where I got 8 from! That's 205/50/15 on 3.8Kgs rims at around 35psi.

is a few kg make a big weight difference???

I think the wheels on that Teg look better than most 'lightweight racing rims'
You can get custom made steelies cheap - wider etc. I saw 16" steelies on a Falcon the other day, so i'd say you could even get wide 16" steelies to fit a Honda; probably lighter than other JDM rims... And since its all about performance these days, why not?

thx heaps for the contribution guys.
so the conclution is...
steelies are lighter than aftermarket wheels, but performance wise may lose on grip and handling depending on wideness and tyre threads.
aftermarket wheels..having almost the lightest 15in (3.8kg) + the tyres will get around 13kgs. and the bigger the wheels the more heavier they will weight all in total.
at the end..weight wise.. stock steelies will b 1kg lighter than aftermarket wheels (considering 15in here) so its 4 kgs in a set of 4.
and if u hav 17in like VTC- 8OY ..tat will b ~6kg more in one wheel. hence ~24kgs in total for a set of 4.
and v t e c mentioned..does a few kgs make a difference?? i would like to know too. :) would an increase in weight like 4kgs in total make a big difference? how about an increase in weight at 24kgs in total? wat would it feel like?
add more comments guys :)

Isn't the whole point of alloy wheels that they're lighter than steel wheels? Alloys are a softer metal, so they scratch and dent more easily. Alloys are light, steelies are strong. I'd be really surprised if you got two wheels of the same size and the steel wheels were lighter.

steelies are damn light.. period..
i can understand y u think they are better for lauching..
I reckon with steelies regardless of profile ill be faster down the str8 as they are light as...
dont compare steelies to 2-3k wheels.. compare them to the avrage mag for the average joe and they become a massive avantage..
just my 2 cents..

I just have stockies on the crx
If I got aftermarket rims, they would only be 16's...
Big rims can make the ride pretty craptacular, lightweight rims are good, but you don't really notice the difference in weight :(

Steelies will bend/flex......keep that in mind.

really? your not trying to say the steel flexes are u? or the tyre?
Steelies are very soft compare to alloy wheels.
Steelies are very heavy compare to quality(JDM) alloy wheels, even the stock alloy in same size. but still lighter than most replicas.
i used to have a set of oz made replicas, which are 15 x 6.5JJ, with 205/50/15 tyres, weight 17kg/each!!! this is the weight of a quality JDM alloy wheel in size of 17" plus tyre.
Cheers
My friend gave me some JDM 14" lightweights (i think they're lightweight anyway :p). They'd be better than stockies...
I just have to get my tyres moved onto them and put them on my car.

mine 2 , plus they r much wider LOL

i have just put on a set of sprint harts (lights) and with a tire inflated they weigh 11kg, the guy which i got them off put my fat fives on his car and he said it felt surpisingly heavy....
i got out of the tire place and couldnt beleive it, its like the accelleration feels better, like when changing between gears it doesnt lag as much as it did and as wyn said feels more torquey. feels great and looks awesome

yeah 15x7... .. steelies are mostly 15x6...
but steelies are lighter than about 70% of the alloy wheels of the same diameter out there and its under $50 a set...
btw... alloy is alot softer than steel
ive only got rotas.. feels and weights like OEM enkei alloy..
all you lucky fellas... i want the evomaster ones too...
how much are they a set?
