hey guys,

want to lower my gsi when i fit new 16"s on sometime soon. I called my insurance company, they've got no qualms with me lowering the teg as long as its "approved in ur state", so i gave RTA a call and they said i can lower it a 1/3rd of my stock height. Can anyone tell me what that 1/3rd would be for a 95 gsi? Basically i wanna know how much i can lower, lol.

thanks,

jon

hmmm... i haven't heard that one before.

i've always thought that it was fine so long as the lowest part of the car was no less than 100mm off the ground...

That's right. The lowest part of the car has to be a certain height above the ground.

Call up the RTA again and speak to a supervisor.

Lowest part of the car has to be 100mm or higher, and some states have a rule about the height of the headlights.

I agree, call the RTA and talk to someone like a supervisor who knows what they are talking about

Well, in Victoria there is a height clearance from the lowest point of the vehicle to the ground, i think it's about 10cm. If the car is lower than that it's unroadworthy.

ok cool. thanks for that. i tried to call RTA just then but had to wait too long so i hung up. will try again later.
Can anyone tell me the stock ride height for a 95 GSi though? I would just like to know.

Grab a ruler and have a look under your car.

in NSW the law states that ur only allowed to power it 1/3 of ur stock height, however if u have a stock car thats low, the lowest legal height is 100mm. its in the rule book if u have a look, and i also asked at the RTA. but basically it means lowest u can go is 100mm above ground, coz the stock heights vary for all different cars.
y the hell would u go so low anyway? u gotta remember wen u sit in the car and have passengers, its gonna add weight....

Cos its fun to ride low :D

I think my current ride height is 65mm or so (about the height of a coke can on its side)

Measure the height and then subtract 1 inch (half the difference in stock vs new wheels), assuming the car came with 15" from factory.

as long as you can drive over a coke can (100mm high) and no knock it over you should be right ;)

Measure the height and then subtract 1 inch (half the difference in stock vs new wheels), assuming the car came with 15" from factory.

That wont work, since the overall height difference of the wheels will be affected by the different profile of the rubber. For example, my 18's are actually a slightly smaller diameter than the stock 15's overall.

If the car hasnt been lowered, use a tyre calculator like the one here http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to find the difference in the overall diameter of the wheels.

Sorry I forgot to factor that in

Just keep it above 100mm and you will be fine.
