Hey guys,

This is something that has puzzled me thus far. When street tuning, how on earth do you know when you have optimum timing advance dialled in? I mean, with fuel its easy enough, you have a wideband O2 to show you exactly what you need to know. But what about timing?

From my limited understand it seems that on a dyno, the way to adjust timing is to look at torque curves; optimal timing will be achieved when you have found the most torque, and moving timing either side will reduce torque output. How would you know where this point is on the street, when all you have is a wideband, possibly an EGT and your bum in the drivers seat?

Cheers :)

There's no secrete to it, its all about listening to the engine, knowing different notes, investigating the burn pattern on spark plugs, exhaust gas temp is also a ok guide, but in reality all ignition tuning should be done on a dyno. It also comes down to knowledge, after dyno tuning 100’s of Honda’s you begin to know what work and what doesn’t work, you don’t only pay for peoples time when dyno tuning a car but also there knowledge in engine tuning.
Tuning thow should be left for experts, simple unless you like buying new engines….
Also when road tuning you have to have the correctly listening devices as even the best ear’s can’t hear engine knocking from within the car.
