Hey guys... my cars coming up to the 100k service and ive been told my timing belt will need to be replaced. Ive also been advised my cv's will prob need 2 be done too. Just wondering if anyone knows how much this will/should cost so i dont get ripped off. Also does anyone know where yu can buy these in syd cauz i kno sum1 who will install them for at quite a good price. By the way, i drive a 97 manual gli (let me kno if yu need more info)

Just have alook at your CV joints - the rubber boot outside maybe be cracked or have a hairline crack - ofcourse best to get them both replaced. Cost for those = ABOUT $60-70 per boot ( one per side)...timingbelt to be replaced is about the $170 mark i think ?

Go to Hannys performance , in Smithfield up here in Sydney. Robert will take care of you :)

if u go to honbits in wetherill park and get some Boots for your CV joint off them.............they aren't hard to fit...

but i would go to a mechanic to do your timing belt.....

yeah im planning on buying the cv's and timing belt and getting a mechanic i know to fit them. i called honbits and they were quite expensive - they told me $150 each plus $45 each to install - and thats second hand. I called Peps at bankstown and they said $138 each brand new! then my mechanic will install them for a good price. is that a good price or do yu think i could get cheaper ?

$138 is that for the boot? or the whole axle?

Mz-Civic:

Timing Belt at 100.000kms is a normal change.... but changing CV's at that interval seems that someone is trying to pull some $$$ out of your purse - unless they inspected the Rubber Boots and they are cracked...

Make sure you get YOUR mechanic to check the Boots, but you can check the actual CVs yourself by basically doing a full lock in each direction and going around in a circle, slowly accelerating - if you hear any regular knocking, knock knock knock knock getting faster as you accelerate - means the CVs are worn.
But like i said - at 100000kms and being only a 97 I highly doubt that would be an expense you need to look at.
One of my cars is a 1983 crx and the other 1991 crx and i haven't had to change the CVs in any of them for the last 7 and 5yrs of driving. and thats actually doing some hard cornering and racing in the gen2.

get your mechanic to check and save some $$$.

yeah a friend of mine suggested that the mechanic that told me that is prob trying to rip me off. my car isnt making any noises when i turn corners... so i sort of doubt that they need to be changed.

Im only on 91,000 kms at the moment, so do i just wait till 100k kms to change the belt? Also, how often should yu do a service ? - like each XX kms should yu do it?

thats what I think - the mechanic was trying to rip you off - "nice girl, with a cool car - i'll try and push some bullshit her way" - type thing.
But do as I said tho - full lock both ways in an empty carpark and just listen for the noise - just to be sure - because going around corners will NOt determine that. needs full lock. and have the rubber boots checked just to be sure - cos if they are broken - dirt will get in there, grease will fall out and that is a sure way of having to replace CVs faster than normal.

well - recommended service is 100000, but nothing stops you from doing it anywhere between now and then... and its only RECOMMENDED to do a timing belt change at that interval. Ive seen cars do 150k kms and have a belt changed - but its risky.

Id recommend doing a filter and oil change every 5000kms. Some people will say only change filter every 10000kms, while oil every 5000kms - but oil filters are so cheap these days (even from Honda) that its just better and cleaner for the car to have it done every 5000kms. Otherwise you're running new oil while the filter has dirty oil still inside it - pointelss in my opinion.

Hope this helps
Mike

Service manual actually says that timing belt should be changed at 168,000kms. Anybody need proof of it i can email them the actual page.
This applies for a 98 integra gsi or V-tec alike.
Only in oz do they make people change timing belt at 100,000kms in order to make more money off us. Does anybody know of a integra from 98 upwards that has snapped a timing belt before 150,000kms???
the 93-98 integras they reckon can reach 130,000kms easily with no timing belt change.

Hey guys,

I've been told by my mechanic that a timing belt change needs not only a new belt but seals etc, and depending on the model of Honda, an extra belt.

He is a reputable guy in Newcastle and depending on the Honda model, he's quoted me between $400-$700, including labour.

What do you guys think?

Hey mate,

Hanny's sounds like a good deal. However with most services you get what you pay for.

I'd be interested in finding out EXACTLY what gets replaced in a timing belt change by Hannys. I'm no mechanic, but if you don't do all that is required (changing seals, etc) then obviously parts cost less and labour time is reduced.

If someone has Hanny's number and can get a list of what he carries out in a timing belt change, that would be great for a comparision. Otherwise, comparing prices is just empty talk.

My CV joints now have 298,000kms on them since the car left the factory. They are only now starting to click. Why yours would be wearing at 100,000 is beyond me - as long as they aren't torn or cracked.

Go to a real mechanic for a second opinion (aka Robbie or Peter at Hanny's).

Think about it his way

Your Mec is quoting about half the cost that Hannys charged to re-built my whole engine

So $400 is not that bad for a 100.000l Service and thats if they change everything (all fliters/pumps and so on)

But $700 is mad

OMG - another f*cking noob with NFI!!!! :D

FYI, Robert who owns Hannys has well over 30 years experience servicing Hondas - in fact you can go there and maintain your warentee. He is THE most knowledgable Honda mechanic in NSW if not in Australia and can usually get things sorted fast.

I've known him for over 20 years now as well as most of his mechanics and have never had an issue. In this case, you have absolutely no clue - he's inexpensive and provides quality service. If you want expensive with sh*t service then I suggest that you look for a centre with a letter "H" on it's sigh (no names dropped of course).

TY, come again.

to add - Robert is a freak. But gosh dam i love him *hugs uncle Robbie*

He is the ONLY single mechanic in history to never make a mistake during any mechanical work. This includes others at Hannys even ~ let alone anywhere else.
Still , ANOTHER free bump for Hannys - i will tell you i would not trust ANYONE in Australia with my car except Robert. ( this includes apprentice kids at HONDA)

Back on topic - Get the CV boots replaced if they need it - and get that timing belt and waterpump done !
