An EF Civic has a b16a vtec, 1.6L vtec engine. The majority of the ED's have a carby 1.5 (I think). The main difference is the performance. The b16a puts out about 117kw whereas the d15 puts out about 60kw and it's not fuel injected. Some of the ED's have a 1.6L non Vtec which is fuel injected it's a d16y? And puts out (I think) in the region of 80 or 90kw.

only the SiR came with the b16a -_- how many SiR's u see on the road?
shoosh jdm power, shoosh

the most common engine in the ef/ed would be the d16a8/ZC and the d15b carbys

Basically the difference is EF is the chassis code in Japan, ED is the chassis code in australia, america and im sure a few other places, and EE is what it is in England (and maybe the rest of europe)

So really its the same car, Honda Civic/CRX 1988-1992, different specs for different countries though.

And yes, only the EF9 Civic SIR, EF8 CRX SIR, and EE9 Civic SIR (not sure if europe got a B16A CRX) came with a B16A engine in it.

they are basically the same car but there are minor differences. like SiR's have different shaped bonnets & lights (well thats the case in crx's)

in another thread recently it was also pointed out there were different globes in the headlights lol

does any body know the vin numbers for the JDM EF CIVIC Si and SiR?

im interested in getting one, a SiR would be better but i think i might have come across a Si. Is it correct that the Si comes with the ZC twin cam engine with no VTEC?

is there any noticable exterior differences?

europe got the ee8 b16a crx. This would have to be one of the most confusing things honda has ever done, basically they are all the same, all suspension parts are interchangable just make sure you use the same lca.

cool, so all the vin chassis numbers start with an EF9 for the Si and SiR CIVIC, just the engine configurations are different.

ZC for Si??

and the b16a for the SiR

no, a SIR will be EF9, the SI should be EF3

EF3 Civic Hatchy Si
EF7 CR-X Si
EF8 CR-X SiR
EF9 Civic Hatchy SiR

AUDM Vs JDM
ED9 = EF7
ED3 = EF2
ED6 = EF2

And yes, only the EF9 Civic SIR, EF8 CRX SIR, and EE9 Civic SIR (not sure if europe got a B16A CRX) came with a B16A engine in it.

Europe got the EE series... EE8 was the B16A powered CRX which came with 150 bhp (not the 160 ps of the EF8), EE9 was the similarly powered Civic.

EE8 came with an all leather interior.

There was also a 1300, 1400, 1500 carb EE and the DOHC ZC powered EE in Europe

4th Gen = EF for Japan and some parts of Asia, EE for Europe (manufactured in the UK), ED for US (manufactured in Japan, Canada and the US) and the rest of the world.

hmmm... "minor differences"... lol. The EF8/9 and EE8/9 were totally reworked from the firewall forward :D

So much is NOT interchangable with an ED or a non SiR/VT it isn't funny. Trust me , I know the pain :(

thanks guys, so is it really hard sourcing firewall fwd parts for an EF9? i would assume the firewall back would be the same as the ED civic.

Interior is a lot more upmarket - you can't get a lot of the replacement panals. Instrument cluster is totally different as is steering wheel and seats (front and back). Sideskirts were added to the EF9 and a different rear bumper plus rubber lip. A few other minor parts otherwise.

FW forward, engine mounting locations are different as are crossmembers, bonnet, filler panal, bumper, front lip and sway bar.

Re rear "Civic" panals. The first EDs were black, later ones were red transparent. EF9s come with the "Civic" raised on a red panal and "VTEC" underneath it.

*interesting note*. Some '91 EFs were facelifted with the SiR nosecone, right down to the bottom of the line cars.

the quickest way i identify the models apart - EF9 civic front indicators are white and curve to the side of the car, whereas the EDs ive ever seen have only had indicators facing the front, not visible on the side and are usually orange. as seen on setanta's avatar

EF9 indicators are a combination of orange and white as below on my EF9:

Oh and BEFORE anyone points out that the SiR badge should be a red Si and grey R, not the reverse, I know, but don't know why mine is that way. I have originals waiting to go on the car

I just haven't found them since moving to Sydney as I haven't unpacked half my stuff yet ;)

Are those headlights plastic or glass, and are they faded? Also what's going on with your front badge? If you don't mind answering my questions :)

pete here is a ricer.
he's got a different colour honda badge.

anywayz the difference between an EF/ED is
EF is the JDM and the ED is AUDM
Firstly the front end is different
Smaller lights, Lower lip on the EF, Front bar/Bonnet/Fenders are all different.
if u have a look @ the back the Rear Bar is different
the EF has a smaller number plate area than the ED due to the fact that jap number plates are much smaller than Aus plates

Lights are polycarbonate and they discolour :(

Front bage... sigh - some vaginal oriface ripped my original off with a screwdriver and fornicated the bonnet. Hence plastic shit badge :(

For the headlights, there is a $20 cream that will restore them back to clear. Common for the Soarers/R33 Skylines to fade, also be able to restore your headlights.

Or you just get some 2000 grit sandpaper use soapy water and sand the junk off

Hey guys, just been trying to do a bit of researching on ED's.
Im looking into getting a cheap one as a DD, with eventually upgrading the engine and have a few questions on the topic (thought id ask in this thread rather than a new):
-how hard is it to source EF9's in aust?
-what sort of price should i expect to pay for an EF9 as compared to an ED?
-are 88 - 91/2 ED's the same in appearance through each year on the exterior (i realise the 87 had a red boot)?
-is it only the front end of an EF that is different in exterior apperance as compared to an ED?

Thanks guys.

There are only afew EF9's in australia, so not very easy to get.

The price between an ED and EF9 would be a fair bit, you can pick ED's up for a couple of hundred up to 3000 odd.

88 and 89 ED's have a different bumper with orange fron indicator lights and grey rear boot garnish thing

90 and 91 ED's have a different bumper with longer clear/orangey indicator lights and a red garnish

Some EF's in japan, apart from EF9, came with the SIR front end. EF9 has the SIR wing, SIR lip (rear and front), side skirts and red garnish with vtec logo or special edition logo

thanks champ.
i wouldnt mind picking up a damaged one at the auctions and sourcing a JDM front end
(if cheap enough, and if theyre not too rare). I think it would be a great DD and i could make some money off selling my current car for my other project car by doing this.

One thing i did notice with the 90/91 over the 89 is colour coded door handles. I think i would prefer a 90/91 model, for some reason they seem more appealing.

I might do a little more research :D

Paul1985

not only are the door handles black on the 89, but the mirrors are also.
Anyone know if the door handles can simply be swapped over on a 89 from a 90/91. They look better colour coded and it would be cheaper picking up the 90/91 colour coded ones from the wreckers i would think.

9-11 thou for an EF9 in good condition (and these are getting harder and harder to find - especially in Japan).

I keep thinking of selling mine, but the money offered never seems to justify selling.

I think most of this should be in the EF8/9 owners thread :D . Never mind though. Setanta your EF9 is tight as goin by the pics. Is that the stock air box? Where can I score some of those SiR stickers for the back and the DOHC VTEC programmed fuel injection sticker for the drivers door?

Setanta
25-04-2006, 10:35 PM
Stock air box - a custom made panal filter flowed air as well as a CAI on the dyno.

Ebay for the stickers - mine are original Honda ones - and I have to replace the door ones soon - stupid carwash had an idiot with a gurney rip the drivers door one :(

Will let you know if I get door stickers reproduced.
