When to Check Engine Oil Lvl in EK4

Hey guys this morning i decided to check my oil levels for my engine...

1. I checked just as i turned on the car... oil level was over the botton "hole"

2. after about 1 minute on,,,, the oil level was ZERO!!

but the thing is i havent been getting check oil lights and my car been running perfectly... i added new engine oil today...

so wots the MOST ACCURATE TIME TO CHECK OIL?

1. When car off + cold
2. When car off + warmed up
3. When car is on + cold
4. when car is on + warmed up

i usually check it when the car is off and the engine is cool. when the car has been running the oil gets splashed around everywhere and you cant get a accurate reading. thats always wat my old man used to tell me newayz. lol

most accurate is after car is warmed up ( not after a good thrash).
In the morning, start the car and let it warm up.
Turn it off, and pop the bonnet and ofcourse check the oil level. This seems to be the most accurate indication of the oil in the sump.

Start your car 10 sec and turn off before you check it.

common sense really...
when its cold the oil is less viscous (sticky)
when u run your motor in... oil will get circulated in the block

do what other ppl suggested turn ur engine on for 5-10 secs... pop the bonnet and check the oil level... if its a cold day...

if you turn it off then check it right away all the oil will be encapsulated within the engine, so if it has been running turn it off, then let it settle for a few mins allowing the warm(thinner) oil to sink back to the sump then check, cos if you turn it off and check it right away and think it is half empty and add a few litres to your oil level it may be a few litres over, if its over its bad for the seals in your engine.

if you're car is cold then wont most of the oil have already drained back into the sump?
If you turn the car on there will be less oil in the sump?

dont cheak the oil while the engine is running.

It would really make SFA difference to the oil level on the dipstick if the car was warmed up or cold.

But yeah, dont check it with the engine running :rolleyes:
