Hey guys

just wondering, is there any real differences between say, a 96 spec and a 98 spec DC2 Type-R?

I read there is a weight difference between these 2 spec's, but i cant figure what differences there are between them..

Is the body shape slightly different?
Where might this extra weight gain come from?
Are there any other differences anyone can tell me between the JDM DC2's?

Also, supposedly the 96 weighs less, so if i were to get one of these cars, would i be better to get a 96?? i would think the 98+ would be better due to the fact its newer, and the difference in weight didnt seem much anyways.

thanks.

hmm more cosmetic than any engine diffs.

HIDs come standard in the '98 along with 16's (in a 5 stud instead of 4 x 114.3 15" wheel for the 96 spec).

body shape/dimensions identical.

plus you should be getting a engine and chassis with less k's.

98 spec has bigger brakes,5 stud, 16" rims,4-1 extractors, 4.785 final drive, hid lights , suspension was tweaked thats all i can recall off the top of my head.

Rear tail lights, the indicators has a slight pinkish colour compared to the 96 model, rear bar is different. Watch the legend of the Type R's.... that'll compare both and its amazing both 96 and 98 model did a 14.2 sec quarter run STOCK!!. =)

most of the dc2's you'll find here will be 96spec. I only know of one 98spec in Sydney and the asking price was $35k.

as for the differences, everyones spotted them out. cosmetically, its the rear bumper and bigger wheels. performance wise, the brakes is the major factor. 96spec brake rotors are an inch less than 98spec and to be honest, it's a bitch trying to find replacement rotors due to the uncommon offset and pcd. Other things is the final drive, which is longer (4.4).

If you want to be safe, get an audm dc2r. do a jdm conversion if you are really fond of the lights. the chances are a 98spec will never pop up. a 96spec... u will have high k's, unsure of the previous history since it's an import. braking isn't as good either. all this for an extra 6kw? u can easily get 6kw from the audm with simple mods...

take it from a 96spec owner;)

hope that helps!

I think the 96 spec, didn't come with ABS, no air bag, no power window, hand built engine. Most of the people say the 96 spec is a better & a REAL tyre R

Stephen, the 96 spec came with all these items except for the airbag.

They didnt have ABS as standard, I think it was an option or maybe not even an option, air con was option, stereo was option, pretty much alot of things were option, but no airbag option in the 96 specs.

No man the ABS plus Airbags were just an option on 96 models and standard on 98 spec

sounds rite to me, the abs and airbag were options... my bro's old 96 spec jdm didnt' come with either. had power windows and air con tho...

98 spec is of course more refined, naturally cos it's the update. i'm sure the weight diff u mentioned is no more then 30 odd kg's, which isn't much... a fat driver compared to a skinny driver will make up that difference :D

anyway, in melb, i've only seen 1 98spec jdm dc2r... i knew the previous owner before it was recently sold to a member on this site. the one in syd for $35K? dang wot a rip! So Paul, i wouldn't put my hopes on getting my hands on a 98spec if i were u... on the other hand the 96spec is a different story. BUT then, either or any jdm dc2r would be damn SWEEEEEEET ;)

thanks all for the info :)
looks like i'll have to keep my eyes open..

just a quick question...
what if i come across a 96 at a bargain price but the engines had it... would it be worth buying and doing an engine swap??

tRipitaka

if your happy with another engine being in there, then by all means, go for it..
aslong as u get something with more oomph than the original jdm b18cR engine and never show anyone your engine bay.. no one will ever question it..

or is it a H22A or something.. lol.. i dont know

tRipitaka

k20a would be a better decision, but only if you have the money..
i'm not sure how the weight distribution is with a h22 in a teg, but in a civic, it'll cause understeer..
but k20 would be better..
