Hey guys/gals
Ive been wondering about importing a car from NZ. I am interested to know what information anyone has on the topic. I want to know how much it would cost to initially get the car to Australia and if the car can be registered on Victorian roads or not. I am looking at a JDM DC2R and im just curious how much i would be looking at if it was imported from NZ. If anyone has any information then that would be great. Thanks in advance

So that means you can import a car which is for example 2 years old or even 14 years old without restrictions?

the 15yo rule refers to cars that are 15 years and older..
i.e. 1990 models..

Cars are piss cheap in NZ, but if you buy them there there is no way to redgister them in Australia without owning them for 12 months over in NZ... its unfortunate :(

Rules are the same no matter which country you import from. If you live there and own the car for 12 months NON-interrupted (you have to show proof), you can legally bring ANY car into Australia.
Otherwise, if the car was built before Jan 1989 (i.e. '88 and older) you can import any car without having to own it for 12 months first.
For both of these options you only need to make it roadworthy in order to register it.
If the car doesnt qualify for either of those it must be brought in through SEVS, meaning it gets complied by a registered workshop (=$$$). Only certain cars can come in that way, and it cant be modified in ANY way.
Oh, you *could* bring any car in for race purposes only. You need a CAMS level 3 license and the car can never be registered on Australian roads...
Hope that clears things up...

can't u like make friends with rta people or something?!
surely there are ways perhaps illegal to get around the problem?.
Like what is stopping me from getting plates ordered for a car, and registering it without them knowing where the car is from?
may sound stupdi but it could and should be possible

I am in new zealand as an aus citizen. Am getting an EP3 or Euro R accord. Will probably send it to Aus after 12 months. Current model cars are still pretty expensive though in NZ.
ie an EG6 will set you back about 5000-9000 depending on condition and spec (94 update being on the high side) pretty cheap
An EP3 civic type R 04 model with 2000km is $40,000, one for sale currently.
A Euro R accord is between $37-44K, again depending on year, model, and kms.

EP3's can be imported under sevs when a workshop decides to do the compliancing plate for it, and do the proper testing to make sure it falls under the adr rules. So they would have to import like 2-3 and do crash tests on them and all that. Theres a list saying what cars can be brought in aslong as the proper tests are done on them.
