I was in the same position about three yrs ago and I worked out that if I was going to put in a B18C I was looking round $4K - $7K Including all the wiring and so on, so I opted for a Jap spec B18B from a 96 DC2 Gsi and the most I spent was on just the engine it self was $900 bucks and I fitted it my self in my garage, a week after getting the engine it was up and running! and I have never had a Problem since

Then again it depends on what you want out of your car?
a B18B and B16A will be your cheapest options, B18c you will be looking past 3K by the time you finish puting it in you will go way past you budget, unless you get your self a B18C from a DC2 Vti-R
The H22A will end up owing you $8K plus, Coz I know of some one who has done it to his Teg and takes forever to do, due to there being a need for lots of custom made parts needed but still possible and the K20A has Never been done in a LS Teg (well that I know of ) and you would better be off wacking one of the first two mentioned before and add a turbo for the same time and money you would have to spend in making the K20A fitt in the LS.
Then again it would be something unique, but it is really up to you!

cool i think i will go with the B18B like yourself, but may i ask the difference between the B18C and the B18B i am after resonable power, enough to beat most mildly done up commies, but no turbo due to budget and insurance costs.

ls/vtec conversion?
they dont go too bad in stock form, should be able to beat std 6's without too much hassle

The B18B Has no Vtec opossed to the B18C series but you can convert the B18B to Vtec by replacing the Cylinderhead for a Vtec one from a B18C or B16A-C so it is really up to you, I have no Problems beating most V6 powered cars I have Run against a few VR/VS Commonwhores and left them for dead I have also beaten a new Magna VRX and I have also Kept up with a few Skylines and such which is not too bad for a N/A 1.8 4 cyl car! specialy one without V-tec! and there is always more room for mods, like cams, ECU, exhaust, and such if you wanna stay N/A (Naturally Aspirated) or you can always go turbo like what I'm looking at doing........

once again up to you Bro?????

just reading another article by someone here and i have chosen to go for a B16A when i do it because of the problems with the Vtec head idea.

Yeah that's what I would have done! only if back then I could have found a B16A! well I did but back then I didn't like the idea of replacing the engine from a 1.8 down to a 1.6 lol I remember once I had found a front cut of a Jap spec DA9 with that engine in it for $2000 what a bargain! I whished I had that kind of money back then whem my engine whent Kaaaaboooommmm! but oooohhhhh well, just hope you find one in a good condition coz most have been reved of their heads! in my opinion that is....
Oh and just before I forget! you can also fit a B20B ( thats right two liter ) from a CRV I think or a HRV???? ( I always get them confused ) with no major problems! from what I have heard they go straigt in, but not many people like them coz when it comes to mods like Boost and so on, they tend to be very weeak!!!

Let us know how ya go with the transplant and stuff!!!!!!!!!!

Good on ya!

if u thrash your car dont go b20 coz it wont hold up hehe
i got a jdm b16a and its not much quicker then the b18 untill u reach 3rd gear u will pull away..
guess it depends how u drive.. if u like the high revving engine i guess u could go b16
if u like instant oooomph straight off the line go b20.
