Hey guys, I'm new on here. Anyways, I just recieved a semi built head from a friend of mine, port/polish on the head and intake manifold, upgraded valvesprings and retainers, and it's milled .020.

The problem I've encountered is that it's a bit dirty on the inside. Down where the valvesprings and such are there is some crud and what not. Also on the bottom of the head where you can actually see the face of the valve, where the combustion takes place, there's som e nasty gunk on there too.

Basically my question is this - what can I use to clean the internal part and the external part where the combustion takes place? Should I just run oil through it? Or should I hit it with a cloth type wheel on my dremel?

Also there looks to be some minor gashes / scratches on it, I don't think it should cause a problem but I don't want them to score my cams, should I just file the rough spots down?

Finally I recieved GSR cams with this head but I'm not sure if I should use them or not. If I use them I know I'll have to adjust the valve lash, but I was told that I will need new cam seals to use them, is this correct? If not what will I need to run them without issue?

BTW it's a B16 head, I'll post pictures of it.

Thanks, Jim

It looks like head gasket gunk which means it had a f##cked gasket
either use diluted degreaser or fuel to clean it out use a small paint brush and make sure you wipe it down with a rag before putting it together... or in other just get it dry

who the fcuk ported that head? Throw it away and start again.

From those pics, the port dividors are FLAT, and combustion chambers are rough as hell. i'm guessing you'll lose performance.

BTW: thats not a B16 head, it looks to be from a vtir integra. B16 heads have recessed quench pads!

Hope you didnt pay too much for it.

this guy is Jim , from the US of A. Perhaps different wordage to accommadate our Aussie tech terms and vice versa might me worthwhile guys :)

Sofar all i know is "GSR" = vtir b18c lol.

Also , i know not much - but that head looks not-so-clean....looks like its jsut been pulled off a b18 block and been degreased and thats it.

looks like waters been sitting there for a while, a few rusty valve springs...

The cam holders dont look like they are off a b16A either

Thats interesting, is there any way I can confirm that it is a B18C (VTIR?) head and not a PR3 B16 head?

I'll try and get some better pictures...I might reconsider putting this on until I can get some rock solid info on it. I also got an intake manifold with it, isn't the B18C (vtir?) port / bolt pattern different than the B16 port/bolt pattern? So if there is no way to tell by numbers on the head I could try putting the intake manifold on my real B16 head...

Supposedly the intake manifold is port/polish too, I'll get some pictures of it.

Thanks for all the help so far, greatly appreciated,

Jim

Alright, I found some somewhat comforting evidence that it is indeed a B16 head. Here's a few more pics:

Stamped between the exhaust ports on the head:

Are they welded quench pads?

Just got back from the machine shop and they told me it'd be $160 to bring it back to life, complete clean, tear down, valve grind, all that stuff. While thats not a bad price, I won't pay full price for the head either, if he still wants full price he'll get the head sent back and I'll be expecting a full refund.

Are they welded quench pads?

If they're welded, then chances are they would have ported the chambers too.
Also, if its been welded, judging by the porting work, they havent re-heated & conditioned the head, so chances are its even worse than I originally thought.

even my my noobish perspective....spidey sense tingling....

Please dont use this head :)

If it has PR3 stamped on the intake manifold as well.... most likely be one of those first gen B16A found on the EF crx/civics... But yeh does look like an odd ball to me

The later B16A are still stamped with PR3 however the manifold has a P30 stamp....

The cam holders on the later series are much more bigger and have a smooth finish
