faulty sensor in fuel tank.
youll have to replace the whole fuel sender unit if you get a new one from Honda.

Are you sure that its broken?
Its not supposed to come on as soon as the needle moves into the 'red zone', it only comes on (in an eg anyway) when there's like 4 or 5 litres in the tank (from memory). It says the exact amount in the car's handbook.
Plus Honda fuel gauges are notorious for being very pessimistic about how much is left (mine reads almost empty even though I have about 8-10 litres left).

there are two senders in the fuel tank, one for the guage, and one for the light.

my guage was damaged in an *ahem* incident. Now it reads empty on the guage with about 100km left in the tank. Probably just needs re calibrating or something. yeah get a second quote, preferably from somebody you know who has experience. mechanics are notorious for tryin to rip people off. But then he could be right.
lets put it this way, my car died at an intersection cos i was pushing it to the limit to see if the light would come on.. and it didnt =(
it wasnt them small intersections, it was the intersection coming off m5 onto hume hwy !!!
so embarrassing

lol.. man but cant u tell from the gauge... like the needle???
:D
thats the thing, the needle just hit the empty line, and it choked and the car collapsed...
after sitting there blocking traffic (approx 10 cars behind me) and trying to start my engine, it finally started and drove it off the road, then let it relax for a min or two...
but the strangest thing is, after i left it, the car started running fine again? went all the way to the petrol station in livo .. strange car i have
anyway back to the point, its just one of those things that get to you about ur car.. the small little dings n probs
so i just wanna fix it once n for all, n whoever i sell the car to later on wont have as much annoyances as i have had with it.
I've got the same problem, the light doesnt come on. But even when my needle goes below 'empty' it still has around 40k's it can do. I can live without the light, but if its a few bux to fix wouldnt mind doing it
