The day you can buy tickets i'm at the gate waiting to buy.
Getting the 4 day pass thurs/fri/sat/sun
I can't wait.

Alan Jones is a great business man and knows his shit, best thing about him is that he knows a lot of people and has great experience.

I can say I don't agree with the driver, but who cares.
Sydney has a major international motorsport event.

I envy QLD.
With Indy and a few weeks later they will have the WRC BASTARDS!
I think that starts in 2007

A real mixed bag on the A1 GP debut
A steep learning curve for some...
http://f1.racing-live.com/img/l3.gif
http://f1.racing-live.com/img/vide.gif

Asian drivers struggled to make an impact as the new A1 Grand Prix series got off to a chaotic start at Brands Hatch on Friday. The new championship, which is billed as a World Cup of motorsport, pits nation against nation on the track, with a key feature being the arrival of countries so far unused to the sport.

But that grand design backfired as rookie drivers found the going tough. In the first practice session, India's Karun Chandhok caused the most spectacular accident when he turned in on ex-Formula One driver Jos Verstappen. The two cars made contact, pitching Chandhok into the air and badly damaging his car.

Chandhok had already allowed another Formula One refugee, Alex Yoong of Malaysia, to pass him but failed to notice the bright orange Netherlands car of Verstappen, causing the pile-up.

China's drivers have struggled to match their more experienced rivals in testing and again were caught out in practice. Their nominated driver Qinghua Ma spun at the fast Paddock Hill bend and brought out the red flags once again.

Collisions are rare in practice, with drivers concentrating on finding the perfect set-up for their cars, but the A1 GP debut bucked that trend. The problems continued in the second session, with Japan's Ryo Fukuda and Czech driver Jan Charouz both spinning off in quick succession. Russia's Nikolay Fomenko followed countryman Vasilev's lead by spinning first and then crashing into the barriers. Germany's Adrian Sutil almost collected the stricken Russian car, bringing out more red flags.

Even more red flags followed when Tengyi Jiang crashed the Chinese entry before Christian Jones finally stopped the session for good 18 minutes before the scheduled end when he slammed his car into the barriers.

Despite promises of an equal playing field with even drivers from countries with little motorsport pedigree being able to compete, the timing sheets at the end of first practice told a different story.

Scott Speed set the pace for the United States, setting a fastest lap of one minute 16.875seconds in the first session. Speed's GP rival Nelson Piquet Jr was a quarter of a second behind for Brazil while Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre took third. Britain's Robbie Kerr was fourth while Yoong was fifth.

Chandhok had little chance to set a decent time having only completed two laps but Chinese driver Ma clocked 13 and was still over nine seconds off the pace. His countryman Jiang was over 10 seconds down in the second session.

Haha, just watched the first half of the race. The track was so narrow and tiny! But the cars are so leveled that it is difficult to overtake based on power alone. Those that manage to overtake are good (or the driver in front is worse than he is). Nelson Piquet's son won the first race!!!! WOO!!!!!!!

Interesting racing. But they really need blue flags.... NO BLUE FLAGS!! A guy 3 laps down held up a long train of drivers on the lead lap... 3rd -> 7th were all in convoy behind him. There was also some dangerous inexperienced driving, but you'll get that.

I enjoyed the racing. Brands is a great drivers track, but not good for passing. Should get a better idea of the cars when we get to more overtaking friendly tracks. Great to see the cars moving around though. Getting sideways everywhere, no traction control, etc.

It needs a bit of work, (so do the pit crews, lol!!) but it has a good foundation on which to build. I'd say we'll see a few A1GP drivers in F1 before long. It really shows off the drivers' talents. And I wouldn't be surprised if we see some more F1 or ex-F1 drivers getting involved in A1GP... Takuma Sato maybe? :p

Man, I wish I had a pit with Nelson Piquet and Christian Fittipaldi working on setting up my car!! No wonder they had the thing running perfectly. It was absolutely on rails the entire 2nd race.

Will Power 4th and 2nd is a great start. I wonder if he'll drive most of the races for us. GO TEAM OZ!!

The idea is great, but some things to me are going to kill this.

1/ Some rules
- Power boost (4 options during each race to use it)
- Sprint race then normal race (to many races)
- Points system is stupid (10-1 points for positions 1-10)
- Pit crew, need an extra guy for the tyres like F1.

2/ The drivers
- I personally think this is the biggest problem in A1, that the old F1 or not so talented ones (Sato) will go there and the great A1 drivers like Piquet Jnr will be stolen by mid-class F1 teams (Red Bull, Williams)

3/ Some of the tracks
- Just saw some of the tracks they are going to, F1 left most of these tracks because they weren't up to scratch, that or they couldn't handle it.

Overall, I did like it.
Abit long and boring at some stages.
Scott Speed, Will Power, Piquet Jnr and the NZ driver are AMAZING!

Haha.. "not so talented ones (Sato)"... thats so true. But if f1 drivers do go there they'd thrash everyone (well, we'll hope for sato's sake he will).

But its not about the drivers its about the teams... half of the ppl watching it have no interest in motor sports and just want their country to win, sorta like the Olympics. :)

^^v
28-09-2005, 11:32 AM
not so talented ones (Sato) will go there

n dont forget Webber :D :p

imo i dont think this series will go very far... well it certainly wont have the high profile of f1... i jus dun see that happening...
theres just a too big a gap from the good n not so good drivers... something lik 8-9 secs?

Give it a few races to get itself sorted out. I like the concept. I think it could definitely work but it does need fine-tuning. The points system really is stupid.

I was encouraged by the overtaking. Can you imagine an F1 making an overtake at Brands Hatch?! I dont think so. Just wait 'til they get to better tracks for overtaking and tracks where it's easier to set up the cars. The top teams hit the ground running, 'cos they knew how to set up the car for Brands.

A1 would be quite a good series if it had:
- better drivers
- better commentators
- better marshals
- better organisation
- better wheel-nuts
- more car reliability
- better tracks

The fundamental idea is very good. It's just everything else is wrong. It has the potential to be a really good series in it's second season.

Looks like Will Power's going to be Aussie's next big open-wheel racer. He and Davison certainly have some talent. I just saw Power win a race in Formula Renault and he's a clear second in that championship.
