Just a quick question guys, Honda is telling me to also do my timing belt cos the car is five years old (2000 EK1), they're concerned the rubber belt may be deteriorating still. Anyways, the service is already costing me over $600 (auto) so can't really afford the extra at the moment, should I just get it checked for the time being and get a report on its condition? What's an auto B16 front cut worth, haha..... :D

Haha mate I know this may be hard to hear, but you probably just should pay for the belt, it cant be THAT much more can it? What does an NRMA call out cost compared to the cost of a belt?..... you catch my drift?

probably would be wise to do the timing belt, but if your thinking of doing a conversion in the next...say 5-6months then i would hold off on it.

It’s a risk to keep driving without changing the belt. I’m doing my 100,000 service this week. My car is 7 years old but I only just bought my car and was surprised it wasn’t changed.
If you can’t afford it this service, do it as soon as you can afford it. I don’t think Honda’s have zero interference head designs (possibility of bent valves if you don’t change it) and don’t forget to change the water pump at the same time.

Just to clear this up, should the pump be done with the timing belt?
I had a charade that was 130000kms and 14 years old with only one belt change, hmmm, I just don't know, normally I wouldn't take any risks with any of my cars but since money is tight my priorities have changed :(

I had my timing belt changed (which was recommended) at 100,000kms. I was told by Honda itself that it would be required to be changed at 100,000kms. So personally I don't know why they have told you otherwise..

That's another thing, dunno if he's just trying to scam some more money outta me or if its legit, I've never heard of a timing belt letting go at such low kms..

The book states 5 years or 100,000kms. The Rubber belt ages and decays. It’s a risk to take and it’s not recommended that you do wait more than 5 years but “it could last”.
The pump should be changed as if it does fail you will be up for the same labour cost of changing the timing belt again.

It may be a scam.. but first check how long you have had the car for, then consider the kilometres.. if they say you still need to change your timing belt, tell them to stick it and go somewhere else in my opinion hehe

yeh its only due because you dont do that much milage. its normally either 80-100 000kms or 5 years which ever comes first. i recommend changing it i know its expensive however its better to know that it is safe for the next 5 years or 100 000kms besides the sooner you change it the better. it is better to do the water pump too as if it blows soon you will have to take the timing belt off again to get to it thus making a huge difference of the expence of the labour

What do you mean scam; they are just following the genuine Honda servicing guide lines.
It’s recommended that you change your timing belt at 5yrs or 100,000km which ever comes first. I would stick with what Honda recommend in there service manual. It’s possible that the belt may last but there is an element of risk attached. As mentioned earlier it’s best to change the water pump at the same time.

its no scam.
timming belt should be replaced every 5 years or 100000kms. I personaly dont think there is benifit in replacing the water pump. honda water pumps are awsome quality. If the car has had genuine coolant and serviced regualarly then there would be no problems. but if you want to play it safe go ahead and do it.
I changed my timmng belt on my 97 delsol in 2003 after 28000Kms

Car booked in anyways, the service guy says they'll make a note of it to check it when the covers are off during the service and report back, but he's confident I can wait til next service to keep costs in check. Its a Feb '00 build so 5 years just...

My Civic is a Dec '98 and still on the original belt. It has 67,000km on it. I'll probably get it changed at the 70,000km service.

In hot climate places like Malay, HK, Thai etc
it is recommaned that the timing belt should be change at 60,000kms
parts and labour is also cheaper over there too :(

$1040.60 later :( - not bad for a car with nothing wrong with it :(

im sure that wasnt just for a timing belt?
what else was done?
waterpump?
oil change?
the labour cost on water pump and timing belt should be around 2-3 hours.

i had my 80k service not long ago which was $645, and they reccommended timing belt for like $450 supplied and fitted.. i was like ZOMG FCUK THAT.. but now everything is okay :p... we bought the car like 2 months ago.. and dad said to the car yard owner dude that he was pissed cos of the $$$ of the last service and the $$$ of the timing belt.. subaru's cost less, so have all of our other cars.. and cos we bought it in 2005 and it was a 97 and it should be changed every 5 yrs or 100k kms... so the car yard owner said next service was on him, sorry for incovenience... saves me some $$$ for uni lolz

Dude with other cars I would say yeah go for it.
But Honda has an interference head design. In other words if you don’t change it and it does snap your screwed (bent valves and all kinds of trouble). It’s going to be a 2-3k service bill rather than the 300-400 bucks.
Being cheep now will cost you in the long run.
I just looked up what 40,000km service is supposed to be. And I don’t think you got all that hard done by.
40,000 Service.
Replace
-oil
-oil filter
-air filter
-fuel filter
-spark plugs
-transmission fluid
-brake fluid
-clutch fluid
That’s a dam big service. Plus you did the cam belt.

Errr NO!
But then again, why do a major service at Honda? I bet u can get a better deal at Midas or Ultra Tune.
Anyways, take the risk? Here are sum pictures of my sisters 98' 9-3 Saab, she just bought it about 6-8 weeks ago, while driving into the underground car park at work, ALL THE BELTS RIP OFF, FKING SHE DRIVES DOWN 2 LEVELS B4 PARKING THE DAME CAR!!
*gets phone call: "John call dad, theres sumthing wrong with the car! Smoke started comeing out from the bonnet and it was really hard to turn the car!"
"yeah ur timming belt is probably loose man, ill tell dad"
My dad and i rock up to my sisters work.... WTF!!!!!

Anyways, whats done is done, got another 5 years to worry about it. Funny thing is i kept the old belt and it looks newer than the the one they put it, barely a sign of wear on it, just smells like oil fumes.
I was really annoyed at how they informed me though, I said at the beginning I need a report on it and we'll go from there, I get a phone call and they tell me the mechanic says it nees to be done NOW, I thought fair enough, get in there and ask how they test the belts and the answer is "Oh, there is no test, its just goes by time or kms" grrr fair enough again as it is just over 5 years old, grrrr...
I'll be doing the services scheduled at 5 years (2000 civic) and I'm afraid of what the bill will be, lol.
But that's part of owning a vehicle. :D

wahh... if he dont have the money he cant do it. so he has to drive with it... hondas are good cars they should be able to handle a few more k's.... i bought my r32 from japan it had 120 000km on it and i didnt change the belt for another 1-2000 kms... it was fine...
BUT if you are gonna do the service do the oil and other crap yourself just get a mechanic to change the belts.. that'll save you heaps

regarding what honda recommends/says in relation to 5 years or 100,000km (which ever comes first):
why does age of the car come into play? what if you only drive the car like once a week?
Say you drove the car 100km per week, thats only 26000km in the 5 year period, is it still required you change the belt?

Because the belt is made of rubber. What happens to rubber when it ages? It brakes down and decays, making the belt weak.
So even if the car had 7kms on it and you didn’t drive it for 10 years. You might start it up and the cam belt would break.

Ok thanks for the clarification CTR Coupe :)
I went to Hanny's to have my car serviced, told Rob ( top bloke ) that I want to do the belt. I really expressed to him how paranoid I was and he kept patting my back saying do not worry !!!
and of course I trust him so I didn't change my belt.
(FYI: My car is 5 years old at 70000km)

How long does it take to do the belt? I asked my g/f's mechanic and he looked at my car (eg gli 94 sedan)
He quoted me $240 (just labour, i provide the belt) - 3 hrs work
Should i keep looking around?

$80 / hr for labour, eek...
ECU-MAN

takes 1 to 2 hours
depends on the type of honda, maybe 3 plus hours on an nsx
