HELP....EPA out to get me....

Ok guys,

Im real desperate right now. When I came home yesterday.... I checked the mail and there is a letter from the EPA.

I go upstairs open it up thinking its nothing, and then look at it and see this defect notice saying my vehicle is too loud and i have to change it and get it "repaired" and then tested to be under 90 decibels bla bla bla and so on and so on.

I am completely stuck a to what to do. But heres the basic story.... I have a dc2 with an apexi gt-spec exhaust which i really dont want to lose cos it came all the way from the states......and i lost my original cat back so i cant replace it at the moment.

Has this happened to anyone else.....and what is my best course of action....

yes, should pass. <90 is not hard to get

failing that go to wreckers and find the most restrictive, rusty, and ultimately quiet muffler u can find (get one from a toyota echo :P )

ok.....what about my exhaust with the silencer on it.....do yopu rekkon that would or should i just not bother with that and change the axle back

see what i was thinkin was to either find a real dodgy bloke that would pass me or just chage the end for the test period and then return it to normal after......

or swap plates with someone with a quieter exhaust......and see how that went

someone suggested in another thread (i forget who sorry) that you can remove the rear muffler, and make a gasket out of sheet metal with a 1" hole in the middle of it, restricting gas flow making it quieter, put it in the joint above rear axle temporarily, pass the test, take it out again, all good!

go to bankstown mufflers they'll test it out for ya and tell u how much Db ur hitting and start from there..
i took my civic there i was hitting 102db hahahah
and giv u a few ideas of how to go about bringing it down...

take it to a dodgy blue slip place that will clear it...

you cannot use someone elses plates, as the exhaust shop checks the vin on your test

yes you can keep your apexi exhaust piping, but you need a stock muffler

get an exhaust place to weld on a flange to your apexi piping, apexi muffler, and a stock muffler

then you can bolt on bolt off whenever you want <90 dB

only costs like $100

too be honest i have no idea.... either that cos i work late at night....but a guy a know told me that if the cops see you drive past and your exhaust is makin a lot of noise then they'll just take down your license and send it to the EPA...

but tomoorow im gona put the silencer on, test is and see how i go....

if not is there anyone willing to lend or rent me a stock exhaust for a coupleofdays???

Steel wool does not work - someone tested it on the nissan forums and it only shaved 1db.

The best bet is a gasket with a 1" outlet. This is:
- cheap
- no modification to the catback
- does the job.
- is considered part of the exhaust (epa make you remove silencers during test).
