Different size cat to piping

As the heading sujests, what would happen if the cat is a different size to the rest of the exhaust pipping?? I have a 1.5L civic, and 1.8" piping and I was told that 2" piping was too big for my car, but what if i got a 2" cat, would this have an effect on performance??

my mate has a 1.3 doch micra with a 2" exhaust, 2.25" cat and twinloop muffler on it :thumbsup:
