I reckon being an hour and a half later, I can go to bed earlier sunday night, get up for the race, watch it, then have a quick power nap before work, and come out shining like the sun:thumbsup: What a plan.
Definetly should be an entertaining race, I cant see much change within one week. Any testing going on the you no of Jase?

BAR will have new enignes and hopefully have the gearbox problems sorted. Jenson had a real bad launch in the last race hopefully that was just down to the gearbox too.

Doesn't a DNF allow you to change engines... last i remember it did.

only a DNF because of mechanical engine failure i thought, to close the loophole.

Any testing going on the you no of Jase?

No testing but BMW and BAR got new aero and engine "upgrades" so to speak mainly aero packages coming into this GP.

Was it last year that Ralf had that huge accident at Indy?

I think its going to be close this week, fresh engines, Renaults will qualify bad and Michael and Rubens have some hope in there belly.

But, now my money is on Juan to win by a minute.

jackosimm

thought there might be a few little aero touch ups and all that jazz. Certainly was last year with Ralf, that put him out for ages....

yep.. no more loop hole
Hi I am new here.

Correct me if I am wrong, the new sporting regulations allow new engines after DNFs. According to my memory, after the first race in Melbourne where BAR retired both healthy cars to gain new engines for the next race, FIA closed the loop hole by adding that anyone who retires from the race will be questioned and reason of retirement is to be provided.

That said, doesnt matter which part is broken, mechanical or accidental, a DNF is a DNF, and will allow the whole car to be rebuilt - including engine. all the FIA wants is nobody is retiring simply because they have a bad race.

Button and Sato did not deliberately retire, therefore entitled for new engines I guess, again, I could be wrong.

hmm .. man im confused now...

Hondavirgin

i read the FIA sporting regulations and technical regulations and they don't appear to specify, but i found this on the FIA website

http://www.fia.com/mediacentre/Press_Releases/FIA_Sport/2005/March/160305-01.html

but that reads to me that its at their discretion, they'll only let it be changed if its a mechanical DNF. However, they seem to have the power to say no if its not and engine related problem, such as if you have a suspension failure due to a flat spot.

Anyone know if Kimi had a new engine in Canada?

Kawasaki
16-06-2005, 01:37 PM
does anyone know the exact rule? Would sato's gearbox failure be considered as an engine failure? Can't wait for monday

Vivski
16-06-2005, 02:06 PM
I'm pretty sure they can have a new engine. If you have a crash or a big seize like Sato did, I'm sure you could put a new engine in. The rule cannot be only mechanical failure, 'cos if you back the car into a wall at 100km/h, there wont be much left of the engine at all.

I assume if the engines are damaged then BAR will have new engines for Indy. If they are not damaged then they're not damaged and there should be no problem running them for another race.

One thing we have to bear in mind is that the design of an F1 car these days requires the engine to be integrated to the chassis as part of the fully stressed structure. When an engine is mounted in such a way, no one can guarantee the engine wont be damaged during a crash.

LUD02C
16-06-2005, 05:14 PM
Kimi will have a new engine for USA,so will most of the pack.
If you have a mechanical failure you can have a new engine for the next race, but i'm sure the fia gets involved.

Because Nick Heidfeld was the opposite to everyone after Maylasia.
Sato will have a new engine after what happened, otherwise he wouldn't be able to race.

Stupid rule in my opinion!

Hondavirgin
17-06-2005, 11:03 AM
Well, if Kimi is getting a new engine for Indy, then he must have been using an old engine for Canada, and therefore wasn't allowed to change it after his crash (well, spin) at the 'ring. That indicates that only a failure in the engine, or some other incident which means the engine can't be used like an accident, allows an engine change.

Anyways, check this out, again, i'm amazed by the acceleration from 100 to 300.....

A lap of Indianapolis with Montoya
305 km/h through the final turn...

Montoya fired up for Indianapolis challenge

Juan Pablo Montoya has had little luck in recent races but heads to Indianapolis, round nine of the championship, keen to secure his first podium position for McLaren Mercedes. The Colombian talks you through a lap of the 4.192KM Indianapolis F1 course.

"Powering up to some 335km/h in seventh gear as you cross the famous yard of bricks, you then brake hard for the tight right hander that takes you onto the twisty infield section of the track. The 90- degree turn is taken at 90km/h in second gear and flows into an equally tight left-hander, which is taken at of 115km/h, still in second.

"The circuit then gently bends to the right as you accelerate to turn four. You brake from speeds of around 225km/h in fifth to 128km/h for the right hander. A short burst of power takes you to turn five, a 45-degree right hander, which is taken at 115km/h in second gear.

"Another quick spurt on the throttle leads to the long 180-degree left hander of turn six. This swings you into turn seven, a right- hander that is negotiated at similar speeds and leads onto the back straight.

"Accelerating towards the 90-degree turn eight, you reach 290km/h in seventh gear before dropping to 120km/h in third for the left hander. The s-bends of turns nine and ten follow immediately.

"The tight right-hander of nine is taken at 75km/h in first gear, with your speed increasing ever so slightly to 90km/h in second for the left hander of ten.

"On the exit it’s quick on the power along the short straight that leads to the final corner of the infield section, reaching some 200km/h, before braking to 130km/h to negotiate the right hander. Accelerating out, the circuit begins to curve to the right as you rejoin the oval.

"Flicking up through the gears, you keep hard on the throttle through the rights of turns twelve and thirteen, which leads you back onto the pit straight. Turn twelve is taken at 250km/h and by the time you reach the long, sweeping banking of turn 13, you are travelling at some 305km/h in top gear as you begin another lap."

Maybe Kimi wanted a fresh engine for Indy? Well, the engine obviously made it through Canada fine, so I don't see the problem.

Hondavirgin
17-06-2005, 04:12 PM
yeah, was just trying to work out if Kimi had been allowed a fresh engine after his failure in nurburgring to get some clarification on the rules.

7th Gen
17-06-2005, 07:05 PM
a bit too much speculation about engines etc?
i reckon everyone wants to win every race, despite having a new engine or not?
can't really see the engines being so on the limit that they only last for one race? if the rules say they are supposed to last for 2 races it is reasonable to assume they are designed to last 2 races?

jackosimm
17-06-2005, 07:22 PM

7th Gen
17-06-2005, 08:42 PM
why don't they just go back and be able to spend as much money as you want and have a stack load of engines for one race

or here's a wild and crazy idea - make the one engine last for the ENTIRE SEASON :D

or just use something off the shelf (like from a road car) as opposed to being so customised and on the limit all the time

Montoya dominated day one at the US GP
Juan Pablo Montoya picked up where he left off in the opening practice session of the day at Indianapolis buy dominating the second practice session as well. Montoya, looking to really kick- start his season this weekend, out-paced team-mate Kimi Raikkonen by a tenths of a second to lead home and McLaren Mercedes one-two in Friday practice.

With McLaren out front, Ferrari moves their way up the timesheets with Rubens Barrichello taking the third fastest time in the session, albeit half a second off Raikkonen, with Michael Schumacher in fourth position.

However, the main story of the second practice session today involved Ralf Schumacher. The Toyota driver was just about to complete his first flying lap of the session when the back end broke away sending the unfortunate German into the retaining wall where he suffered his massive accident last year. The session was immediately red-flagged and Schumacher clambered from his badly damaged TF105 unaided. A left rear tyre failure was the cause of the incident, with the Michelin coming off the rim, losing all pressure and sending the unfortunate Schumacher into the wall.

Minutes before Schumacher’s accident, team test-driver Ricardo Zonta spun off the circuit backwards and into the gravel. Zonta would later get back on track but was just 19th fastest while team-mate Trulli sat out much of the session as well and was tenth overall.

Back at the sharp end of the field, Nick Heidfeld was fifth fastest in his BMW Williams, a tenth slower than Michael Schumacher with team-mate Mark Webber just 13th in the sister FW27.

A big shunt for Ralf Schumacher in practice
stopped the session
David Coulthard survived a spin to set the sixth fastest time in his Red Bull Cosworth with team-mate Christian Klien in the 14th position. Test driver Scott Speed did a solid job on home soil, putting in a late flying lap to move all the way up to eighth position in his RB1.

Pedro de la Rosa, who missed most of the first session due to mechanical problems, was back out in the third McLaren MP4-20 and was seventh fastest just ahead of Speed.

Renault played it cool in Friday practice, seemingly not too interested in going for a fast lap time. Championship leader Fernando Alonso was ninth fastest ahead of Trulli in the Toyota with Giancarlo Fisichella taking 11th position.

Felipe Massa was 12th in the leading Sauber Petronas ahead of Webber and Klien while BAR Honda found themselves down the order with Jenson Button and Takuma Sato just 15th and 16th ahead of Jacques Villeneuve in the second Sauber.

Robert Doornbos salvaged some pace for Jordan Toyota taking the 18th best time ahead of Zonta and then the two Minardi’s with Patrick Friesacher on this occasion quicker than Christijan Albers. Narain Karthikeyan was 22nd ahead Jordan team-mate Tiago Monteiro.

Practice resumes on Saturday at 16.00 CET.

RALPH SCHUMACHER just pulled out of the US GP! due to his accident!

^^v
19-06-2005, 01:09 AM
man bad luck to him...

Schumacher, who fractured his spine in a not dissimilar crash here last year, went into the barriers in the banked final turn after a rear tyre failure. He climbed from the car unaided and after initial medical checks at the circuit and at the local Methodist Hospital, where he was also treated last year, said he would be fit to race.

However, after a further examination by FIA Medical Delegate Dr Gary Hartstein on Saturday morning, it was confirmed that the German would be allowed to take no further part in the weekend.

Schumacher is not thought to have sustained any serious injury and his withdrawal is believed to be a mainly precautionary measure to avoid the risk of secondary concussion were he to have another accident. He is expected to make his race return at the next round at Magny-Cours in two weeks' time.

"This news is obviously very disappointing for myself and for the team," he said, after confirming he felt about 80 percent fit. "I wish the team all the best for the rest of the weekend and I'm confident that I will be back in time for this month's French Grand Prix."
