View Full Version : What genuine honda fluids MUST be used?
Hi all,
Im taking my car in for a service in the next week or so but need to know what genuine fluids must be used.
Is it just the power steering fluid? Can everything else (such as oil, coolant etc) be another brands? I ask because I'm not taking it to a Honda dealer because i dont enjoy being ripped off :)
Cheers

Factory gearbox oil is good.....but as for others aftermarket stuffs are better:thumbsup:
But it's not essential is it?
I've heard that if you dont use honda power steering fluid, things can go wrong..?

things CAN go wrong yes. All fluids , made for the same purpose are not always equal.
Just pay alittle more and use OEM all the way *peace of mind knowing your HONDA is run by HONDA blood :)*

basically apart from engine oil, honda is really keen to let honoda owners to use genuine Honda fluids  b/c Honda is stressing out always that using other than Honda lubricants can void your warrenty.... but i think even if you take your car serviced else where, most of mechanics will order fluids from honda anyway...

I saw on DVD, the Technical Director of Spoon (I think, maybe JUN) said Honda's Oils are good enough if you only track your car once or twice a year...

Yeah i agree with ben, i'd stick with honda fluids... for example, i changed to good brand name (cant remember what tho) gear box oil with the right specs for my previous car (which was an auto :() and the gears keep on slipping within the first 15mins, so i drained it and used honda gear box oil, and it ran fine with no slipping at the start.

Definitely stick to using the Honda Brake Fluid for the clutch!
I learnt from my mistake!
Just drained and changed my gearbox oil as well cos it started grinding and I used the Honda MT fluid for that too.
All better :D

well i work at a honda dealership, and there are cases of people getting their cars services somewhere else, without genuine fluids, and then the components wear out alot faster, then try come back for warranty, then gets void.
so i would recommend using genuine fluids at all times, especially coolant, other brands tend to corrode the pumps, welsh plugs etc. i've seen many cases of this.
but if you find something better and trust it, go for it.

how would they know if non honda fluids have been used?

i agree, warrenty wise we should stick with OEM fluids :D
well not engine oil... i think they first check the history of service if you request for warrenty repair...

depends on which honda you have but in general .....
power steering must be honda fluid - aftermarket ps fluid is dexron auto trans fluid only
auto trans fluid can be non genuine but it needs a special additive added to it (most auto trans specialists know about it) or use honda auto trans fluid
most oil companies (castrol etc) have specific listings for manual boxes but as long as the mechanic sticks to the correct listing you shouldn't have any problems
coolant - as long as the right concentration of antifreeze/antiboil coolant (not just plain corrosion inhibitor) is used - no problems ... but don't mix different coolants (can have a chemical reaction when combined) if you can't find out what's in the radiator , change the lot - also use a decent brand , no $3 specials from the cheap shop ...
by the way - if its still under warranty (new) I'd stick to genuine to save any arguments later

D16Y: different fluids sometimes have different colours, that's one of the reasons why honda have changed thier coolant to blue, you'd be suprised sometimes that people can spot the difference in different fluids.

yup that is right. they chose to be unique with their colours to be the genuine thing...
Ummz... honda engine oil is not synthetic, as they do not recommend using synthetic oils for sum reason... thats what the parts guy told me at honda today- ^_^

if you can give yourself a bit more time of waiting...
i'd suggest US ebay. there's a seller who's a honda/acura dealer and he sells OEM parts very chaep...
yeah yeah i know the postage and shit will get your price up, but ask him for least shipping and he tends to give me good Prices...
ive got my 4xATF-Z1 (total $12 US), 1x air filter($15) and 4 (or 6?)x oil filter($12 or something all up) and it was 32 US for shipping... and they arrived in about 1 or 2 weeks...
all up i still saved myself about 60 AUS :D
