View Full Version : Euro and RX8 Comparison

Alright.. i know these cars are in a different league, but they can still be compared to a certain extent.

I'll be honest, i've always loved the RX8 and i still do. However the euro is a lot more practical when it comes to convenience, can sit upto 4 other people comfortably, a reasonable boot. The car is smooth and has enough power to have a bit of fun and enough power to pull happily when the car is loaded with a few heavy ppl :p

They are both sleek and sexy in design, but the Euro also has a better fuel economy being a 2.4L 4 Cylinder car, as a opposed to an RX8 that's 1.3 but is rotary and sux fuel similar to that of a V8.

Also that well a Euro is a Honda.. and a Mazda.. well.. somehow feels like a ford :b which is bad :)

The list goes on really.. and can go either way depending what you are looking for.

Price wise it wouldn't be too much to upgrade to a second hand rx8 with very low mileage that's a 2004 model, prob around $47k-56k

What are people's thoughts on the differences between the two cars. I'm very happy with my euro and love it, but there is always that little voice in your head which says.. you want more.. at a sacrifice.

I don't want to make the mistake of upgrading and then being unhappy. It's a tough call, so i'm doing some loud thinking :)

Mmm, do not get a RX8 in automatic. They are gutless.
Manual RX8 has a bit of power 184kw is quite good, with RWD it makes a fun car.
But It still lacks the rawness appeal of RX-7.

And it's gutless down low, like a corolla sportivo.

Good point of RX8
- RWD
- Sporty looking (pull chicks!)
- Rotary engine
Bad point
- lack of boot space
- it's a Mazda(FORD)
- Rotary engine

My best mate has an RX8, very nice car. I've driven it quite a few times now. Good and bad points:

Good
-----

- Nice build quality.
- revs to 9000RPM's
- love the sound of rotary engine
- love the 18" wheels
- looks sexy, no real need to do any aftermarket mods
- awesome cornering capabilities

Bad
----

- lacks torque, the euro has more. Power comes on after around 5000RPM's
- stereo not as good as one in euro
- can only sit 2 people in the back
- limited boot space
- not as quiet as the euro in the cabin

I think theres a pre-production small turbo kit available for the RX8's which should fix the low-end torque deprevation - that should be very nice for RX8 owners...

It's not totally a Ford. The other models in Mazda's lineup may share the platform with Ford (so does Volvo) but the RX-8 does not share its platform with other car makers.

Bad point
- lack of boot space

Hence why its unfair to compare a sports car to a luxory sedan

It wasn't so much as a comparsion. I think VirIIx is trying to ask if he should stay with the Euro or go for the RX8...

I would love a sports car too, but I'll stick to a family car first... then a sports car if I can afford one later as a second car.

i drove my cousin's brother in laws rx8 once.. no one could sit behind me as a passenger.. i don't think that car is designed to have a tall driver with rear passengers lol... same as mum's integra, i can't sit at the back as my head hits the roof due to its weird angle.. A legitimate excuse to drive :p mua hahahaha

I have a soft spot for the RX8 too, although I haven't driven one. It's a little out of my price range (new), but the supposed thirst puts me off. Wheels used to report on one they had a staff car and it seemingly used to drink an awful lot of oil too -- as in you'd be filling up the engine after a hard drive.

Although owned by Ford, I think Mazda build quality is still much better -- just not quite as nice as Honda (which is why I want a Euro over the Mazda6).

With any coupe I think you need to aks just how often people actually sit behind you. My first car was an old 929 coupe (like an RX4) and I much prefer 4 doors -- even just for little things like putting bags in the car. I also don't miss the length of the doors which can make getting in and out of tight spaces interesting -- not to mention the dents. I know the RX8 has the suicide doors, but...

Rarely is there the perfect car, and just about any sports car has a compromise somewhere. I also get nervous about second hand sports cars because you never know just how much they've been thrashed or, more to the point, the problems (like extreme thirst) that caused people to get rid of them in the first place.

yes ant234, it's more of a - should I go for an RX8 from the Euro.

The RX8 does go through a lot of oil and fuel. That's a fact, and im aware that it's not a happy chappy either in low revs, especially driving around in the city.. you'll rarely get to those nice high revs, it's hard enough with the euro and we have upto 7000rpm

I do like 4 doors, only because i do chuck the odd things in the back ie. my work suit, bags and any other stuff u don't want in the front coz it'll fly away if u brake hard :D

As much as i would want to upgrade, i don't feel the rx8 hits the spot completely to turn me over.

But the feedback from everyone is much appreciated :)

and Honda is better than Mazda anyways, hence why i got the Euro over the Mazda6. My mate had one, it was a manual, and the sports hatch. Fugly Dash, Fugly Altezas, and it was gutless in it's gears. But leather seats are nicer ;) kinda like the mercedez with the nice holes in them.

one thing you guys forgot was that in 5 years the euro will still look neat but the rx8 will look like a modern day subaru svx ........bloody fugly. :p

RX8 for sure if you're going sports look, Euro for more luxurious look. But yeah, auto RX8 loses power, so never get a RX8 or any sports car in auto, it'll suck. lol.

in Japan, indonesia and many other countries. AUTO RX-8 priced cheaper than the MANUAL. about 4k cheaper.
Due to crappy 4 Speed auto and less power.
Dont know why here in AUS auto rx8 is priced higher than manual.

Just the fact that it drinks more than 20Litres of petrol per 100km when pushed is enough for me to steer clear of this car no matter how good it looks. That sort of fuel consumption is just plain ridiculous.

And it's gutless down low, like a corolla sportivo.

On a side note, I've driven the new 2005 Corolla Sportivo a few days ago and I was totally surprised with its performance down low in the rev range. Had 3 passengers in the car and it felt more powerful and responsive than my Accord Euro. I always thought that they'd be gutless down low from looking at the figures on paper.

Anyway, my brother is taking delivery of one this week, so I'll be able to compare how it goes against my car.

when i say rx8.. there is only 1 rx8 you'd consider..

RX8 Manual with Leather Pack..

you'd be stupid to buy anything less.

It's like buying Porsche Boxter :b

Just coz it's got the name doesn't mean it puts out..

*cough* Subura GX done up *cough* ;)

I agree that for me personally, I'd only go RX8 leather pack.

However -- not that I've driven one -- the Boxter is a still a great sports car by all accounts. It's just not as good as other more expensive Porches. It's all relative... I wouldn't say no if someone offered me one.

Similar for the WRX: from one point of view, yes it's a cheap small car with an expensive price tag, but from another, they really are pretty good performance for money.

Always been more an Evo fan myself and they're another case of still a bit cheap and nasty inside, but they sure as hell go... I've never been in any other car that's gone like an Evo...

Jusrt depends what you want in a car -- and how deep are your pockets!

VirIIx
23-06-2005, 12:11 PM
agree totally with you Tobster,

I love the evo, and personally hands down would choose one over the WRX STi any day.

But you're just paying for the performance - like the WRX. Mind you, the WRX inside actually feels more luxurious when compared to an EVO lol.

If my pockets were that deep, i'd have my Porsche :)

only a matter of time that the 911, (933 body style) is within my price range lol.. give it a few more years ;)

Yeah, I keep dreaming that when my mid-life crisis hits in about about 10 years I'll be able to afford that non-thrashed manual M3 that I'll find somewhere...

haha, why hasnt this been moved to the lounge? Its gone waay OT and now its not about honda's lol. Interesting read though!

Let's make it more OT! I reckon the Boxster was successful because it was easier to drive than the RR 911, which would spin easily in the wet when too much throttle was applied.
