is it true that a short shifter can destroy the synchro's in the gearbox or is this a myth?
i used to have a C's short shifter and had no problems and i been thinking about getting another one but im a bit iffy about it now...
i dont think short shifters r bad, u just need to push the clutch in faster to keep up lol.
i have a b&m one and all is well.
the shifter itself wont wear the synchros any more than the stock one will...its the way you shift that wears them (ie, drive normally and all is normal...shifter very quickly and at higher revs all the time and the synchros will wear quicker)

I was under the impression that the pressure the short shifter puts on the shift linkage can cause increased wear, just as driving and resting your hand on the shifter can cause increased wear

yes it's true, damage can occur when when you can't keep up with the clutch ... but it has great advanteges when used sensibly.
saxman i'm not sure that there is any greater pressure if the shifter is a well made piece. There certainly didnt seem to be when i installed mine

It's to do more with the speed at which you shift.
I mentioned this in another post, but basically is you don't go shifting too fast.....all will be well.
The shifter reduces the distance you have to shift........so just shift at the same speed you were shifting before the short shift kit was fitted and you will still be shifting faster :)

NO it doesn't! :p
It depends on the person behind the shifter. Shift as you normally do (as opposed to slamming it into/out of gear) and you will be fine.

Danger will robinson, Danger!!!!!!!!!!!!
read my signature, lol.
Yes, i was a dick and though that installing a short-shifter allows you to treat your gearbox like a err, well, bitch in short, and i munched my box!
take it easy, it's a nice tight feel and you definately get a more positive shift, get a nice weighty gear nob as well, i have an isotta race ball, plenty of weight, feels like it jumps into gear, lol!
Good luck, let us know how you go!
