I recently had my timing belt, water pump and plugs replaced on B16a.
Despite assurances, I don't think it the cam sprockets and crank pulley were aligned properly. Butt dyno tells me that vtec engagement point is like 7000rpm whilst Mid cam kicks in at 5000rpm.... After first running the timing was advanced a little to make it road worthy (must have been dizzy advance..) - but still switch over point remained the same.

I replaced my ignition leads yesterday which obtained only slight improvement.
Noticed my new plugs were blackened and sooty.

Any thoughts on how this could be rectified?

I think he ment that you can hear it change over at 5000, but at around 7000 you get the kick. as if that is around the only point in the RPM range where the igntion timing is correct.

He took me for a drive last friday and it was very strange.

wot is this kick that every-1 seems to be talking about? I have never experienced a "kick" when driving my car (b16a2 engine).....when it goes past 5000 rpm, it pulls strongly all the way to redline......the transition is smooth.....is this "kick" a jerk?

There isn't a real kick like when you come onto boost in a turbo car, but there is a definite change in pitch as you well know. Kick is a bit of an exageration.

Well in terms of honda power delivery i guess this stronger pull is as kicky as your gonna get, unless you start modding...
Apparently the timing belt stretches or wears in a little when new, so maybe go back and get your timing correctly adjusted.

in my old car
sound changes @ 5500rpm
pulls the same from 4000rpm-8000rpm and the power dies off
