Heya guys!
I need your help once again :p
Well me myself got an alarm installed recently and it's just a basic alarm that does the job! Just basically lock/unlock.

But a few of my mates have these high tech pager remotes and this cool thing which they call "engine start" (i think it's called remote start as well?)

Well they were telling me to get it done but i've heard a few bad things about engine start ..
I heard that it damages your engine if you do it alot?

Just wanting to know .. is this true? And if so why does it wreck up the engine there? !

Thanks guys :D

its called remote engine start.. comes with a few pager alarms.. i wouldnt say the GREATEST feature,

unless you really really need it (which i doubt anyone does, might as well just start ur car and have a ciggie to

let ur car warm up) but it is illegal to have on manuals (from memory) but i wouldnt say it is a necessity

feature... more of a bling factor... u buy an alarm to protect your car in the first place...

true that.. it aint that great.. not sure if it illegal or not thought.. but you wouldnt need it unless... you know you car is turbo'd or something.. that way start the car while inside.. let turbo warm up..

I thought remote engine start are illegal on any car irrespective if its manual or auto...

aYeah it's good to warm up the car from inside the house and just leave when you jump into your ride.

Yeah apparently it's illegal, same with turbo timers I'm told because the car is still on and can be dangerous supposedly?

Edit: Then again, I've never seen/heard anyone getting a fine for having either engine start + turbo timer. Never.

noob question: wouldn't it just stall if you remoted started it and it was in first gear?

thats what i thought. If you got a really sweet car i wouldnt do it either. heard it makes your car easier to hotwire.

Plus it is illegal on any car in (i believe) every state.

Good luck with the insurance claim when your car jumps into the sl55 parked infront of you :D

hey new civic (if thats you in your avatar your a hotty!)

anyway they arent illegal!!! we sell them at my work, they are legal in automatic cars without any modifications to switches, however if its to be installed into a manual car a switch is fitted with it so if the handbrake is up it will start and if it is down it wont start. straight from the horses mouth!

nope, cos the starter motor keeps trying to turn over....

hav had these alarms for a while. find it really handy in the morning or when the whether is really cold..and it can warm the cabin too if the fan switch left on :) about remote starting while gear engage, wat i know is for mine it will try start up and jerk(hand brakes on) then stop..and try for another 2 times then giv up. <== but i really havnt tried it yet. only had an experience long time ago when it jerk once and i quickly turned it off. well after tat ..get very used to leaving it neutral and hand brakes on b4 leaving the car.

bit concern bout the damaging part.. anyone know any further? never heard of it until now.

lol well my garage is connected to my room so if i left my car in gear i would have my car in my bed which wouldnt be too good, so i thought there would be a sensor dosnt allow the car to try and start unless it is in neutral... like autos only start in "p", or, "n" you know?

I got a cheap steal stopper...and its a POS. I have to get it fixed cos there is definitely sumthing wrong with it. But then again, you get what you pay for. I personally don't wanna spend much money on a high-tech alarm with lotsa features - I don't think it increases the security of my car any more than ur standard alarm with a steering lock.

Btw, with remote engine starts......what are they for anyway? Do you drive without a key in the ignition? If so, to turn off ur engine, do you stick the key inside the ignition and switch it off sumhow? Seems more of a novelty than a security feature to me...any-1 can add to that?

they are designed for places where it snows. you can start your car with the heaters and demisters before you get into your car.
most systems are setup if you put your foot on the brake while no key in the ignition it turns the car off and sets off the alarm. least thats what i was told.

they're actually pretty handy if u need to drive early in the monrings when its FREEZING... Just turn heating and demister on b4 i leave the car, next day wake up and start it up while i'm shaving breaky, then get in a nice n warm to to drive to work.

We've had a remote start ever since we got our car (which was like 7yrs ago) and not a single problem with the alarm, nothing abt engine not starting or anything like that. If its wired properly then the alarm should also be hooked up to the handbrake. As in the remote start wont work if the handbrake is down (shouldnt hav it down in the first place, but apparently u can also get fined for having the handbrake down and not being in the car. So all the more reason to hav the bandbrake up when your not in the car). Also if the car is remote started and you dont put the key in the ingition but try to drive it (ie put the bandbrake down) engine shuts off.

But as someone mentioned earlier, its not a necessity but its convenient if u got it.

<----- confused

so u remote start it, go out to the car, hop in, it turns off, u start it again.... hmm?! rumour has it that starting a car uses more petrol... or can u put the key in while e-brake is up and move it to on?!?!?! plz explain

no all you do is remote start the car let it warm up get in the car put the key in turn it all the way to acc2 or where your key sits when your driving and away you go.

Like when ur coming home and are on the train and its all cold and u start it 5 minutes b4 u get there so that ur right to go, cause ur alarm buzzer wont work from 5-6 stations away??

Simple, you set it and forget it! cheapy quote from one of those late night shopping tv adz

hey do you need an alarm to have a remote start?
or can it be installed by itself???

can anyone suggest a reputable place to install it, maybe brands??

i dind't read every post so forgive me if im repeating information

but the viper alarms (some of them) come with a trip wire that means if the car is in gear it will not start the engine. I think garret is spot on with this one, but dif states dif laws etc.
