On SBS this morning I saw some "Improved Under 2 litre Class" racing at Oran Park with Escorts, a 86 Corolla with an IS200 motor, some Mirages, Pulsars... but also a fast EF shape civic and an EG sedan with an SIR sticker on the back...

It's apparently owned by David? Parsons or something, but he couldn't qualify the car on the Saturday so GARTH TANDER (!?!) stepped in to drive it on the Sunday and came from the back of the grid to finish in second!!!

Anybody know what's under the bonnet??? Or who Parsons is? What about the EF??? It was thrid in qualifying and finished top 6!

Fantastic racing...

The "Improved Over 2 Litre Class" was also great to watch with GTR's and a heap of rotaries, bombadores etc.

Beats the V8 circus any day!

Having owned a (converted) SIR EG I'm aware of what they usually have under the bonnet, but considering engine swaps are permitted in this "improved" class, it may run something else like a hybrid or a B18C... Love to know!

Anyone>>>???

Just did a Google search and found out the guy's name is Phillip Parsons. The race results for the past few years seems to suggest the EG has a 1934cc engine, which sounds like a bored out DC2 motor!?! He may have changed cars since these results I dug up though as he seems to have run a few different Hondas over the years!

Here is a link to the Tander story :

...and a link to the rules for the "Improved Under 2000cc Class" :

I'd still love to see some under-bonnet pics or find out more about the cars!!!

I'm pretty sure it's a B20B or some sort of 2L B-series. Possibly with a B16 head.

so how does the power of the EG compare with the others in that class?

Tander was quite obviously the best driver out there on the day, so I thik it did better than it would have... The Corolla with the IS200 engine was, by far the fastest down the straight, followed by an escort. The SIR EH (I said EG cause I'm used to hatches!) handled better than the other cars. In absolute terms it was probably a top 3 or 4 car behind those two cars, but just ahead of the EF Hatch, a couple of swifts and mirages. It got pasted down the straights though!

Tander said it was his first race ever at the wheel of a FWD car and that it was a lot more fun than he expected!!!

EfiOz - B20B (Frankenstien!) Are you guessing or have you got the inside running on this one? I thought a motor like that might have a little more poke on the straights than it seemed to... Where have you heard about it???

It's got a B18C(x) (Type-R ... but dunno if aus or jap spec). With lots of other mods. e.g. quad throttle bodies, motec, cams, pistons etc, etc.

Car is owned by Phil Parsons, but he hasn't been driving it recently ... dunno why. He has a collection of other drivers he uses, and the Tander drive was a one off ... don't know if it would ever happen again.

One of the drivers is Leanne Ferrier (or Leanne Tander as she is now :D). You might remember she was driving V8 supercars (or at least the Konicas) a few years back. Her father was one of the founding members of the Honda Car Club NSW, and Phil Parsons is a member in the club. Garth Tander is frequently at these events because Leanne is racing at them ... her main drive being an RX7 in over 2L improved production. So that's the link with GT and the Parsons car.

yup,
and guess who tunes Leanne's car..... I wont mention names, but he's from Syd !

I am assuming this same tuner is responsible for tuning the Parsons car too.

That would be DD! Why wouldn't you mention names?? Is it a secret?
