2.5 inch exhaust for a 1.8lt wouldnt be too big, youd get back pressure from the bends, and gain power at top end were its needed most.
ill either be turboin or uphrading to b18c7 later so it would suit these set ups to.
i no i no 3" for turbo, but my mate is putting down 320fwhp with a 2.5" exhaust with a crappy oem cast iron dump pipe, and he can run up to 22psi in a high flowed T25.

there is no actual question in the thread itself...only the title.
To be brief - 2.5 inch mandrel bent piping IMO is too big for a NA modded car under 2l.

hey man, i know people on this forum running 2.25 inch(non mandrel) on their GSI, and will give them more top end power but lose the low down grunt GSI's have over Vti'rs due to bigger displacement, but you can still do it if you learn how to rev it.
Personally im running a press bent 2 inch(on my 96 GSI) which has given a compromise between low end torque and high end power, and sounds better than any other 1.8 litre engine I have ever heard. I reckon if you are def going to turbs, then you could get 2.5 inch and get away with for a while but might be a little sluggish off the line. Otherwise wait and decide on exhaust after engine decision.
The better option IMO if I had to do it again would be a mandrel bent 2 inch but for 95% of driving I dont reckon its worth the cash, just get press bent 2 inch i say or 2.25 inch press bent if you want it all top end

2.5" would be way too loud
my car sounds like a fart can with a 2.25" non mandrel bent
ideal would probably be 2" mandrel bent
but then again, i don't reckon mandrel bent would do much on an N/A car

mandrel def not worth it for a GSI guys.
just another marketing and selling point so you feel your getting value for money when your not.....
also the bends in mandrel bent pipes will rust much quicker

Hahaha... You've gotta to be kidding. LOL
Mandrel bends only makes a difference to Flow. As for rusting quicker... Most of these mandrel bent pipes are in stainless steel where rust isn't an issue. ( life of the car type stuff). I'd never heard this before, but suppose it is possible with mild steel pipes, as one side of the pipe is squeessed, while the otherside gets streached. ??
Go Mandrel bent everytime. Better flow = More power.
Just my 2c

I have seen plenty of cases where mandrel bends are used on mild steel pipes and the bends have rusted within a few years thus needing replacement, and as far as better flow, i agree with you that you will get more power but not until you are revving above 6-7krpm. power diff between the two is very minimal and effectively no difference for street driving in a stock GSI. Higher powered cars benefit more from this type of exhaust but in this case, save your cash and go press bent!

i went press bent 2.5", all straight trough muffler and hotdogs, bit noisy bit its getting better as it takes bout two weeks to settle, ive also noticed it was a bit sluggish wen it got done and about1 to 2 days later but i think the ECU is strating to respond and the car seems very responsive, i also designed my own cold air intake using the standard box and poly pipes and removing shroud from under the driver side front fender, im having it up on the dyno tomorow same dyno i used last time in "shootout mode" i pulled 103hp last time i was there. just had the itr headers installed then that same day.

ive got press bent 2.5 on my 2.2 litre. i have a canister muffler under the car midway and a sports muffler at the back- the rear muffler is not straight through so while the car is loudish its got a nice hum to it. best sounding 4 cyl around these parts lol.
i seem to have plenty of bottom end power and it never feels restricted up top.

Yeah i got a mandrel bent 2.25 on my VtiR teg. it definately hasn't lost any power. And its not too loud at all. Nice sound without being really loud.
