i reckon post counts should only apply in model specifics and technical. Only wen contributing usefull information should your post count go up.
other sections like gallery/apper. the post count shouldnt apply. Commentin on how a car looks does contribute much
neither should events count

yes...like me i agree with zelda i admit to posting in appearence to get posts up ! but some people take it too far post in same thread like 10 times with stupid stuff.

Yeah true dat as well. One thing I dont like newbies doing is simply signing up and asking a miriad of general questions like "wahts the different between a Vti-R and SiR?"..its like theyre almost lazy to go and research themselves.

yeah...
but no really, I'm new here and I really want to be able to use the "Parts for sale" forum, but I cant until im a "more active member". being a more active member isnt necessarily just contributing to the community in a good way, its also just being a part of the community, asking questions, learning, anything... as long as you're involved, in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I hate spam as much as the next person but if the post count only counts in model specifics and techs, how is someone with no knowledge going to be able to use the parts for sale forum?

lol.. at first i thought, whats wrong with posting up your car pics? then i realised..
SiReal has a good point though..
maybe something like 25 of the first 50 posts are allowed within any forum to help them get started, that way to get to the 50 they will need to contribute a little with genuine discussions (25 posts they should be starting to learn a few things if there dedicated enough to search and learn etc), that should ease off on them a little, after all, they are new and may be honda illiterate at the time of joining, then again.. it would prob be easier lowering the 50 than what i mentioned.. i dont know, just expressing some ideas :P
The Lounge also shouldnt add as counts, people flood the lounge with any old talk..
E.g. who hates zelda? lol i bet people not even knowing zelda posted to add to their counts (havent looked at the thread to be honest, just a guess).. the lounge usually has nothing to do with honda's anyway

the lounge doesn't have posts counted already.

I'm also just wondering why the concept of "post count" is so important anyway because we all contribute when we feel adequate to. Its not like its a battle to see who gets to 10000 post counts first. As long as we're a big happy community, then i'm happy.

initially , there is a very good reason. But we will not talk about that , as alot of people sign up JUST to abuse our free webspace.
But Meh to everything else - its allready official that the more posts to your name means little

The post count is one factor which is representative of participation. It isn't the only factor that is used to gain member status and there is always someone who is going to try and exploit it so that they can sell something.
We have to draw a comprimise b/w being to strict VS stopping those few users who abuse the system just to sell stuff.
A valid point made is that if we restrict to only the model specific forums and the Tech forums........then new users might find it hard to participate?!?!?

new users asking questions and adding there personal experience regarding tech/model spec. info is participatin
Im sure you would want new members who come this site and ask questions or even add useful information. Sometime questions ask by new users are ones that have never been raised before.
You dont want the new users who just join to spam in apperance/gallery/events to gain access to For sale section

Does every single post equal 1 post to your total even if its on the same thread? I notice about mine that it usually only goes up once per thread I post in, unless I'm just seeing things...
Well I do agree that your post shouldnt go up when commenting on the appearance thread especially when all you say are things that consists of 2 words like "clean ride!". But sometimes people asks for another opionions about certain things like rims and get a full feedback for the question, and that to me can't be called spamming right? SO its rather hard to the software to differentiate between things like that unless u start filtering out certain words to validate whether a post is information or just spamming.
Seeing how posting in the lounge doesnt add to your post, how about just disabling post count in the "Traders" section unless you're a trader. The posts there doesnt contribute to anything except the buyers need. Example would be from time to time one thread would be filled up things like "can you send me a picture of ......". This can easily be emailed or PMed to the trader.

Moderators NEED to crack down on these Post Whores its ridiculous. If its gonna be a lousy one word response or a "LoL" save it coz i dont wanna here your lousy contribution, and POST WHORES u know who you are.
i have alot of posts IMO.. i dont think i deserve them.. alot of them are commenting on appearances..
i do ask alot of questions.. but i derno.. i dont feel like my 250posts are genuine.. it really needs to be cut down

i noticed someone mentioned about how vital post counts are at all, and i was going to make the same point.
i realise that this is a measure of participation so that people dont sign up to sell off goods and then disappear, but why not make the tally invisible? that is, allow the system to track the posts for this use, but not make it visible for people to get the urge to just want to add to it to have a larger number near their name??
my god, how sad are some people who consider a higher count as an achievement in life... but thas off topic...

i've said it before and i'll say it again. limit noobs to like 5 posts per day until they reach member.
how much could they possibly need to post in such a hurry.
if they have serious issues with their car and need help they can take it to PM
and i agree with slayer, why do we really need to see the post count?
Mike_
12-07-2005, 02:31 PM
That's not going to work thoguh Panda. For instance, I'm at work all day and I browse the forums regularly. I'm still considered 'n00b' however I feel I only reply with valid posts, even if I post 10 times in a day.
panda[cRx]
12-07-2005, 02:59 PM
well it i'm sure u can handle 10 days at 5 posts

Panda, i'm not sure if we can limit the number of posts per day for new members. However I guess the other option is to disable post counts completely?
Or maybe even keep the post counts the same and increase the time you have to be registered to become a member?

yeh, like i say, keep the count for the benefits in terms of monitoring people and judging contribution etc for mods to check on, but make it invisible so people dont post to see the number go up... can that be done? may take the "fun" out of whoring
z3lda
18-08-2005, 10:49 AM
can u like hide the post counts so that only mods can see, if need be to monitor.?
type one
18-08-2005, 01:29 PM
this is easily solved - let people spam as much as they like - and make rep points "count" for more than a post count... then you can easily identify who is adding value and those of us who just whore around like dirty sluts.
z3lda
18-08-2005, 01:41 PM
the rep points arent working atm.

i'm a dirty slut. but at least its good to keep humourn amongst the forums as opposed to members/nwebies bad mouthing each other cos they so damn stubborn.

Hm
I am not big on post-count and don't put much value in it. For me it is merely an indication how much time a person spends on ozhonda and not about the quality of their contribution.
I have higher postcounts on other boards (well, primarily because I hang out more at local boards) but as I said, I see no real need to change the post count but then again, I don't tend to spam and add a  or :thumbdwn: to every thread ;-)
If the admins feel it is an issue on OZ than feel free to change it ad lib.

I agree
I would like to see the post count dissapear from below our avatar maybe only if you click on the members name in their user details can you see it.
i think this would stop alot of spamming
i Agree that the post count is not a true representation of the User ability or expeariance with Cars i often see the best posts from ppl in tech forums that have a low count but alot of experiance..but thats not to say always
I do think that is most members goal on a forum to have a very high post count and to look down on others so called n00bs which may have just come to the forum but have 20 years as a car mechanic up their belt
anyway enough spamming by me

Its kinda getting out of hand again. Just checked the appearance gallery section and a user has revived old threads and spammed the entire appearance gallery, I'm guessing to get "member" status to sell stuff, as per usual.

could eliminate post count all together, set member status based on length of time being a member... cos waiting for 3 months b4 being able to sell stuff or escape noob status would be too long to bother with unless u are genuine in wanting to contribute, some other forums use this method

I tihnk ppl take what you have to say with less seriousness when you are a 'newcomer'... I know that i'd just like to move past this stage, yet unfortunately I don't have a whole lot to ask that you guys haven't asked/answered before... Searching provides more info than does posting and waiting for a reply. I sorta feel like if i play by the rules, it will take a while to become a member, because i can't post often, because i don't have the experience to answer some questions, and also don't want to hijack the threads. Anyway thanks for providing the great experience one receives when participating at OH, cheers guys!

ozhonda is a phase like mIRC was a phase.
What's that supposed to mean Neil?
I don't see the relevance to this topic.

he is trying to say....alot of people currently use ozhonda becuase they are conforming with other honda owners as a fad. but it will slowly phase out and become uncool , whereby a new site will take over ozhonda and everyone else will join it and ozhonda will be GONE !
