Howdy
The power antenna on my 94 Accord was making funny noises, so I took it off to fix it. I totally destroyed it. I have done a search on this, and know a few people have had similar issues with the horrible noise these things make.
However, what I am after are some alternatives to a stock antenna. I have been to the wreckers etc., but due to this being such a common problem all the antennas were:
A) Also stuffed
B) Already taken by someone else replacing their own stuffed antenna
So, seeing as these things are fairly specific to each car, what have other people done to fix the problem? I like my radio, and it doesn't work without an antenna. Are there any internal / small external alternatives out there? Can I get an aftermarket one that will actually fit?
Thanks everyone, appreciate any help in advance.

Yeah, there are plenty of aftermarket antennas that will fit! personally I just disconnected mine since I dont listed to the radio, but I've investigated getting others. There's your basic, 9" black antenna to sit in the top center of your rear windscreen, there's a type of antenna that sits on the front windscreen and goes from left to right, doesnt protrude at all (hard to explain) and you can use bmw m3 style antennas, if you can get a hold of one.
Alternatively I believe you can order a replacement from Honda, but your best bet would be to go and speak to someone in a car audio store, or an auto-electrician. In South Australia I would reccomend 'Tonkins Car Audio', but outside of SA I have no suggestions! check www.yellowpages.com.au :)

Aeropro make one that is an exact replacement for 94-97 accords. my antenna broke so i took it out to replace it and discovered that it had been replaced before with another aeropro one. i think you only get a few years out of each one lol.
Cost me 40 bux for the antenna
$40 for antenna replacement dirt cheap mate. i paid $150 here is melbourne just for antenna cover (metal part) and instaleld that by myself.

im removing mine and getting the area bogged and sprayed. I hate the huge size of the accord antenna. Plus with an aftermarket head unit such as mine, it goes up and down even when you only play CD's.
IMHO try and find an m3 style "fin" for the roof near the rear windscreen. They look better than the stock antenna and you wont have to replace it...
The knocking sound used to freak people out whenever they got into my car and I turned the stereo on. Some people would even let out a yelp, hehehe

wow, few options I hadn't thought of there. Thanks folks, appreciate it.
The idea of fitting an antenna someplace else entirely and covering over the hole was something I already wanted to do. Will look into BMW style and front windscreen antennas and see where that takes me.
Is the reception still pretty good from the tiny M3 'fin' ? Just seems so small...
Thankyou all once again.

I'm pretty sure it is. The M3 fin is actually used in the BMW's for the radio and for the GPS system so I assume the reception is pretty good. I'm yet to find a decent one at a decent price so if you do, let me know!

Where are people finding all these fancy antenna? (On the web I mean, I'd like to have a look and weigh up the pro's con's etc.) I can't find anywhere that sells the windscreen or short rubber ones on the net.
Sorry, I guess I'm asking to be spoon-fed :)

Suggestions anybody?
Have sourced and priced the AeroPro antenna, it was in the $150 range however.
Also had a look at some windscreen mount options, but they were all butt_ugly. None really attempted to blend in or have a nice flat profile.
Reaaally interested to knowif there is any place (aside from BMW) I can get an M3 antenna, and ballpark cost estimate?
Thanks heaps everyone. :D

Thanks all for the responses. Yes I sourced the aftermarket antenna from a few places and the cheapest was $140. At the end of the day I don't really want to spend $140 on something that is likely to die again in the near future (for some reason, these things just don't have a will to live).
So.. what I'm going to do is pretty simple. Get one of those flat windscreen mount antenna, and hide it in / under my spoiler. Hole will be bogged and sprayed (car needs a respray). Tested the idea today (ghetto wires and tape everywhere) and all seemed fine.
Peoples thoughts and things I should watch out for?
The other place is that there are NO moving parts. Nothing can go stupid every time it gets a signal from the HU. :)
How much is that gona set u back instead? :)

Should come under $50 easily, but I'm having some issues finding a place within the spoilier atm. Now where's that jigsaw....

Well I've shoved one in the spoiler and it worked really well. Some discussion of the matter:

Unfortunately I kinda liked the car without the spoiler, so I'd love to find an actual sharkfin with an inbuilt antenna (not the dummy ones all over ebay - a functional antenna). Has anyone located one of these (preferrably also with GPS)?

bringing back an old thread...
how do you actually disconnect the power antenna so it doesnt come out at all, do u need to take out ur HU and disconnect the remote wire or do you need to disconnect the antenna motor from the boot or something. i dont want to do anything that is irreversable.

Personally I would perfer to just disconnect the power to the motor, from the boot.
Also, see here:

For those interested, the above mod has been faultlessl - have not had a single problem. Considering the number of Accords with a buggered antenna, it's hard to believe the lack of interst. Oh well, your loss. :P
