spark plug cover screws...help!

does any one know those screews that hold down the ROCKET COVER AND SPARK PLUG can be replaced? apprently one of mine, just snapped...

How come?

You can get replacement bolts from Honda and DIY. Just don't overtighten it this time.

if just the spark cover yeah but doesnt the rocker cover have to be torqued to certain levels?

Very True, Yea just for future reference man, They do not need to be more then a few inch pounds of torque to hold. They do not move at all.

nah. it's becos i painted the rocket cover before, and the gasket was leaking oil, as it's been opened before, so i was trying to tighten it more, so it would not leak anymore...
and the screw just snapped..that screw is part of the rocket cover and the spark plug cover...hard to explain , but it's attached to the block.

I snapped one of the inner studs (ones that the rocker cover and spark plug cover bolt to), cost me 14 bucks from Honda for a replacement stud. The outer studs are different to te inner ones, but there shouldn't be much difference in price. Just go into your Honda dealer and ask them to pull up a diagram of the rocker cover assembly for your car and point out which one it is you need :)

Those bolts aren't done up too tightly.

1. replace the rubber gasket
2. apply so hondabond (or equivalent)

funny thing coz same thing happened to me just a hour ago. my friend snapped one bolt then he tried to tightened another one and snapped that one. i was spewin!! so i could only tighten 2.

My motor was warm when I snapped my stud and so was a mate's when he snapped one of his. If you search on Honda-Tech it seems to be a common problem, but not so much if the motor is stone cold.

the torque specs of the rocker cover bolts are like 8ft-lbs. nothing. the hard part is removing the snapped bolts from the rocker assembly. if u cant DIY, it could cost $50 a bolt to remove + a replacement bolt. dont n00b around iwht ur engine unless u know what ur doing.

It's pretty easy to take out the stud, the part that snaps does not affect how the stud screws out. All you need is a 12mm ring spanner if I remeber right, unbolt old stud, bolt in new stud and all is well again:)

Just order one from your Honda dealer and if you're not confident you can do it yourself, just get the dealer to do it at your next service. That is if you get your car serviced by a dealer, you'll still most likely have to order the stud as last time I checked, Honda Australia didn't have any in stock and had to order from Japan (usually about 1.5 to 2 weeks).

Have had this same problem on 2 out of my 3 hondas. First it happened on a del sol, then on my ek4. This is fairly common as I have snapped the bolts 2 times. LOL. Have asked around how much it would cost to replace. i was quoted 50 dollars + bolt at Good Performance but the good guys from Hanny's did it for free when i had my timing belt changed. Sourced the part for 13 bucks from Honda Spares.

The torque settings for the bolt can be obtained by searching around but as weq mentioned, i'm pretty sure it is 8ft-lbs. However, would leave it to the experts if you don't know what you're doing. Briefly, process involves taking off the cam cover, removing snapped bolt to current torque with a "torque wrench" and putting the cam cover back on.... for those who DIY, careful... you don't want to end up snapping more bolts!! ;)

if your going to do it diy its not too hard, make sure the car is cold or else you can snap another one easily trust me i know what you mean by just snapped off, take off the rocker cover, grab a 12mm ring spanner or whatever can fit over the top of the bolt(the snapped top doesn't effect taking the out bolt), take out the bolt get the new one and screw it in by hand all the way until you can't do it by hand anymore then give the bolt like a quarter turn or if that with the spanner, then you're done put the rocker cover back on and be carefull on putting the other nuts back on they don't need much of a turn basically same as before by hand then a bit of a turn the rubber gaskets shouldn't have to squashed only squeezed a little then test you car out if it leaks make sure the car is cold and tighthen a little more if ever in doubt two finger human torque setting is good or even one, hold the spanner or whatever you're using closest to the bolt and go as far as you can with only finger/s and thumb then you're all good :) or just get your mechanic to do it

As you can tell its a common problem. Easy to diy fix with some simple tools as said above
