Hey all,
I have a problem with my glass roof, it seems there is a nice crack on the middle edge of the glass. I have taken the car to a-number of sunroof places and windscreen replacement joints but nobody could help me fix this problem.
The only place was a honda dealership and they couldnt help me.
I have no idea how the crack got there, cannot see any signs of damage from rocks or somebody doing it on purpose.
Does anybody know where i can get the glass roof replaced or fixed. Or order another one in from?
My car is a 1988 honda crx si model Japan Spec with glass tinted roof.
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

Just a thought but maybe try a wrecker .
I am supprised that a windscreen place couldn't help you as I thought they could fix cracks in windows (depending on the size etc).

yeah i am ringing a few places to find out about parts.
I was also shocked when they said they couldnt fix the crack, they advertise that they can fix cracks...
strange
thanks

i think it depends on the type of crack man.
where are you located man?

I suppose that it depends how big/deep etc the crack is.
Maybe because it sits horizontally they dont want to repair it?

hey, this may sound really stupid, but o'brien glass reapir might be able to fix the problem by applying a material into the glass... i know this because they reapired my chips in my front windscreen. yours shouldn't be different to any other glass windscreen, they charge about $50 for each little chip!

You can feel the crack split from the top of the glass but not from the inside.
Its not right through, but a place called sunroof city said its only going to get bigger.

I think most of the places will be scarred sh*tless to touch your glass roof simply for that reason ' a glass roof? wtf?' and they say nah - cos its too much trouble for them.
Its going to get bigger because of the forces which are put onto the glass - its acting as your roof and needs strength while taking corners etc.
Id search through a Honda Dealer again or a wrecker - although don't like your chances of finding something locally - maybe your wrecker can have a look at the NZealand market - could find one there.
Good luck mate - I can imagine it can be tough!
Can you take a pic of your sunroof for me?
And does it retract inside the roof/chasis ?
Cos i got a CRX gen 2 sunroof sitting in my garage.
Might be possible to sell it to u and u can jsut switch it over.

Sorry chi the whole roof from the window visors to the hatch is all glass. The only place you’re going to find one of those is through a wrecker that imports stuff from Japan or NZ. No one local is going to have one lying around.

I will take a picture tommorrow, but its not a sunroof that opens or retracts. Its a fixed glass roof. Does not move at all or open.
Ahhh, similar to the Targa top roofs.

heres something interesting i found on an ebay auction
all the glass panel is , is a tuffened piece of laminate glass 6mm thick which has been mirrored on the outside to prevent lookers in and the edges bevelled (smoothed) to avoid ripping the seals .. then simpley bond the panel into the roof
Looks like you can make a glass roof panel.

You’re going to need a roof skin of a standard crx(if you can even convert it). I don’t even know where you’re going to get one of those from. I know that Woodville wreckers have a crx but the guy is a rip off. Either way it’s going to cost a fortune to fix. I had a look on yahoo auctions Japan but couldn’t find any glass roofs for sale
Mr Sparkle

thanks for that.
yeah i know its going to cost heaps..
hopefully they can patch it up or somethings.
woodville wreckers is the biggest rip off, he has rolled me before with parts.

I just remembered - there is a guy on NZHondas.com who had a whole glass roof for sale. Im certain you could remove yours and replace it...
go to that website... it won't let you in at first, but email Michael whos email is on the page - explain you need entry to find a glass roof - he should be able to grant you access on your IP address... shipping from NZ isn't expensive and you're more likely to find something as 'rare' as that over there than here.
Let us know how you go hey...

So how far back does the glass go? Looks like the majority of the roof is glass. I hope it is safe glass as I would hate to see that in a rollover .

a mate of mine who races an eg.. has a mate in the usa who races a siR crx with a glass roof and apparently its a problemwhich they all have and its to do with the flex of the chassis when the car is cornering
its to do with the force when cornering hard.. is a problem with crx race cars as most go for the ones with a steel roof as its stronger.
a way to prevent it is the front and rear seatbelt bolt brace.. so up the top on the pillar which runs down your boot and the pillar which runs up and down when you open the door...
good luck with it mate.

I got the crack repaired at a windscreen place for $60, you cant see the crack now :)
Only if ya knew were it was.
They did a good job, took ages to find a place that would fix it.
Thanks all for help.

get a brace to go between your seatbelts.. to prevent it from happening again cos if the crack is allready there it will come back easily.. i wouldnt be surprised if its back in a few weeks.

he said it derived from a chip. your not going to get a chip from cornering. something would have fell on it

Try Ebay,
When I had my CRX with Glass roof I did some searching prior to purchase just in case I experienced what your going through. Usual cycle is that they pop up about once every six months.

Wrecker in NZ or import it - btw - Honda dont make the full glass roofs anymore - I was following a story on an american who did the full conversion on his ED6 and he couldn't source parts from Honda Japan so did a full turret cut and shut.
