Hi, just woundering how strong is the b16a2's? I am having so much fun hearing the vtec kickin and sometimes i get worried that the engine wont last long. i know that these engine are made to rev but has anyone encounter any problem with this engine. The car is a gen 3 crx (stock) and done 160000kay's. Should i go easy on it.

I also realise that there are a chunk of smoke comming out when the vtec is on.

will do 200,000 clicks before it needs a head gasket minium - i would be doing a full overhaul then.
Otherwise, drive it how you enjoy it, **** the consequences, it'll nee a rebuild eventually anyways

in all honesty, just drive the damn thing, and fix it if it dies.....

this is such an open ended question.. it really depends on how well u look after your car.. if u drive it hard + do the regular oil change + maintanence.. it will last forever.. weezer here got a crx with i think 300,000 kms and its still going strong..

Is this another thread for self proclaim mechanics and experts to give their perspective on how every single car "In The Perfect World" works? Somewhat there is a high number of differences regardless of make, manufacturer and model? And perhaps the best phrase is "Seek Professional Opinion"

In reality, if you're worried or would like proper reassurance. Get an approved mechanic or Honda to have a good checkover to ensure your car is running at an optimum spec rather than rely your basis on forums speculation and hearsay statements. At the end of the day, it's your car.

'chunk of smoke coming when vtec kicks in..'

if its just one puff of smoke when u hit VTEC, then its normal, just the ECU putting my fuel as its taking in more air.. so its normal..

if its constantly blowing smoke in vtec then get it checked ;0

There is no way to visually check the internals or ur engine unless u take the head off, or the oil pan. U can however do some tests.
A compression test, leakdown test will give u a fairly good indication of how well ur engine is!

don't worry aboutthe smoke the engine just runs a bit rich when it hits v-tec (i worried about this too until i was driving along behind 2 other gen 3's one day and they were all doing it). make sure you get it serviced regularly.

You'll get other engine accessories related problems before you have an actual ENGINE breakdown.

Honda water pumps generally go before anything else.

true, but I know of a 290,000 km B16 that has never had a problem... but know one who's water pump died in 120,000km. Definitely something to look out for

My SiR has 262,000 kms on it. It's still the original B16A as installed by Honda in 1990. It burns no oil and blows no smoke. 79.8kw @ FW. I got it with 160,000kms on the engine. Regular (5000-8000km) services with OEM filters and Mobil 1 only. Timing belt replaced @ 210,000. The top of the motor is getting a bit noisy, but like I said, no oil loss.

Whoops - mine is an original B16A - not an A2

B16A & B16A2 isn't too much of a difference.

Honda engines generally have a long lives....

307,000kms on it now. I've never really had a problem. The main thing that went wrong was the waterpump failed at 280,000kms. But that was because a used a cheapo aftermarket water pump. But even a busted water pump wasn't enough to kill the motor. I drive the car pretty hard too and i take it to track days and drags ect.

once i tried to see how far i can get with only using 1st gear. I got from to city to richmond only using first. I think i would have hit rev limit about 30-40 times. and still, i couldnt blow it :?

if youd bothered to read the title you wouldve realised that it was relating to peoples opinions on the life of the engine. there are several tests that you can diy to get an idea of engine health, so saying that you need to take it to a professional is just stupid. people who just pay for everything are either those with money trees, or those who are just plain stupid. which category do YOU fall in?

so if my engine doesnt blow smoke is something wrong???? because it seems to be running A okay.
and yes mate if you look after your engine it will look after you.

to the guy who drove all that distance in first gear it must have been alot of fun as iv done it thru the tunnel which is not nearly as long but alot of fun and sounded great, but i wonder how much oil you went thru??
